I was winding down from a couple of hours of working on the next chapter of "Mayhem in a Pill," I noticed the downloads for my story and while I am happy about the number, I needed to put it into some kind of context.
I decided to check it against a few other of my favorite stories on the site. I started with cmsix's magnum opus "John and Argent." I stopped my search after that one. My little story "Mayhem in a Pill" is sitting at 772,515. But "John and Argent" is at 654,444. Now, of course, my ego exploded but quickly recombined when I realized what that meant. I'm having all kinds of trouble thinking that my first story has more downloads than one of the greatest stories on the internet.
Don't get me wrong, I'll take it. But I'm not going to enjoy looking up other download numbers of my other favorites. I'll either expand my ego to the point I can't lay down for sleep tonight without having to hang my head off the edge of the bed.
I'll probably do it... but I won't enjoy it. Much.
