Did you know that 'thot' was a word? I had a reader send me some suggested text changes because I wasn't using the most up to date slang. For those of you that don't know, thot means "That Ho Over There;" more or less a synonym for "slut".
I also learned that 'trap' means someone who would appear to be a cute heterosexual but is actually rather effeminate and gay.
To be honest I thought he'd made a typo when I read 'thot'.
I also received emails about Facebook not being the current preferred social media for young people.
It was suggested that I needed to find an editor that was young enough to know all this ... (my editors took offense when I called them old - LOL)
My first reaction was that they were right, I'm not a teen. Haven't been one in more years than I care to admit. I also don't hang out with teens, which is probably good because it would look a little creepy.
Then two things hit me.
1) Who reads my books?
2) If I make the changes to update it for today, will it date my books in five years?
I'm not saying that I won't at some point slip in a Welp, Thot or Trap reference because I will. I would make sure I defined it so people that aren't up to date with the latest slang know what it means.
I also think that it makes sense to not refer to a specific social media platform because they are changing.
I want to thank my readers for helping me. The goal is to continue to grow and improve as a writer.
