I learned about a scifi space weapon in the novel Footfall by Niven and Pournelle published in 1985 and a GI Joe movie too. Many responses.
My real goal was not the weapon but the benevolent effect on civilization it could have, far different than the way most weapons are used. I've not had a single comment about that, just the "toys".
Two months ago I published a story called "Thor's Lightning" about an orbital weapon that could take out bad folks. A few days ago I read an article about an Air Force idea about a "Thor" satellite that was proposed post-Vietnam using hypersonic solid rods to strike earth targets. Much more collateral damage than my idea but "gee whiz"!
Thank you to the readers who let me know that it had slipped through my proofing process. Embarrassing but I'm as human as any one. Should read a lot better now.
I'm pleased that at least a few readers got the message that this story was about. We are in serious trouble if we cannot poke fun at those who are in "power" and try our best to keep them in line. That is the "American Way" I was brought up to believe in. Now it seems to be that fake news and other unAmerican trends seem to be taking charge. This was my feeble attempt to deal with that.
