This post will have some length, but the short of it is that the story will go on hiatus for the time being.
The long of it is that I began to write this story for several reasons, the most important being practicing my writing. It was supposed to be a story I would write from start to finish until I at least finished the first book. No re-reading, no editing, no focusing on too many details. This is because one of the best ways to improve is to, well, finish at least one novel and in the past I would get too caught up on what I put down on paper.
Unfortunately I would also become too caught up in things like 'am I good enough' or 'is the story even any good'. I wanted immediate feedback and I wanted to finish something. So my plan was to upload it, make promises and force myself to write without stop or focusing too much on quality. I succeeded on forcing myself to write without stopping, but I'm a perfectionist. While I didn't get held back as much as before, I still couldn't stop myself from getting lost in the details.
I managed to get over most of my feelings of inadequacy and I managed to accept that writing something worthwhile takes time, but that in itself presented a problem.
While I know where the story is going and what will happen far in the future, the details, continuity, characterization, dialogue, are all things that require a massive amount of work. Work that becomes exponentially harder when you haven't finished even the first book.
I also promised that every chapter would be at the very least 12,000 words long. This created another unforeseen problem, and that is that I find myself adding a lot of details that might otherwise be better not being added at all. The story has expanded to a size that is hard to manage and still has at the very least 80,000 words to go just on the first book. Not that I'm not willing to do it or don't enjoy this, but it requires a meticulous eye that can only come about with a finished product. Hundreds of details that need to be moved around, changed or taken our entirely which only make full sense with an ending.
This is work that I don't have the luxury to do for free, or for the little amount of money I earn doing it. It's a mistake on my part. The slow releases, the posting of chapters as I write them, and maybe just the overall skills I began to write with. In the end I can't afford to keep working on this story as much as I want to.
So my plan now is to start a new story while doing several things differently. These are: choosing a genre with a larger target audience (non-erotica), finishing at least two books before beginning releases, shortening the size of chapters considerably while uploading them five times a week. These changes will hopefully make it so that I can eventually make a living doing this while also practicing for when I try to publish traditionally or self-publish using my actual name.
As for Starry Resonance and this account, I definitely want to continue it and will do so in the future. I love erotica and hate how many of the tropes and genres I enjoy have no erotica stories in their libraries or have very lackluster attempts. But the next time I return will be when I have finished the first book. And the second one won't begin to be uploaded until I've finished it too.
