Finally! The home page can now be filtered

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Due to sooo many requests to enable filtering on the home page (tag exclusions, and author exclusions) I've finally implemented it.

But it's different from the normal way.

Usually, the stories by excluded authors and stories containing excluded tags, don't show up at all in the results.

On the home page, they're collapsed. There is a down arrow to reveal the collapsed info.

However, due to many reasons, it doesn't just work automatically. You'll need to affirm your exclusions so that new data is created in the system for you.

Simply go to the category exclusion page and click 'save'.

https://storiesonline.net/sol-secure/user/categoryPrefs.php

That should update the necessary data and the home page will be filtered.

So for the premier members that want to filter out AI contents, exclude the AI Generated tag/code.

You go to the author's page, and you click 'Exclude 'author name'.

There has been some discussion on the Author's Forum about using AI to edit, or correct stories, so what's considered an AI-generated story. Would those be included (i.e. is any use of AI swept into the same category?)

Do the exclusions counts in the table include authors? I have nothing checked on the page you linked yet it's saying excluding some 4xx stories.

In your account preferences, is access set to full or filtered - the latter will hide grandfathered stories containing characters under 14.

Do you mean that it is collapsing stories of excluded authors? If so, then yes.

Sorry, was too busy and didn't understand that you were talking about the exclusion preferences page.

Yes, if you don't have any codes or genres excluded, but you do have authors excluded, then that page will report a number of stories excluded. It's the number of stories your excluded authors have.

I had forgotten the exclusions by genre. Fixed.

You'll notice that the header bar will tell you why it was excluded.

The priority is for author, that gets excluded first.

Then genre.

Then codes/tags.

Hi Lazeez,

The whole home page is now excluded even with no items being excluded on the setting page

Dinsdale ๐Ÿšซ

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

You'll notice that the header bar will tell you why it was excluded.

Would it be possible to expand that a bit?
Something like "(Excluded Author: Android_Marvin)" or "(Excluded Tag: Budgerigars)"?
If a story falls foul of multiple categories, only giving the first one would be sufficient.
Then we have the related questions: What happens if an author I Follow posts a Budgerigar story? What happens if a story in my Library falls foul of an exclusion? One option would be to ignore the exclusion, another would be to ignore it for the "Reading Queue" (which I'd do anyway).

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@Dinsdale

Done.

or "(Excluded Tag: Budgerigars)"?

Genre and author name, done. Tags, nope. It works on the short form of the codes, and that doesn't make sense to put in the notice.

The library is curated by you and no need for any filtering.

(I think Dinsdale was asking if stories in his library would be included in his home page, even if, say, the author adds an excluded tag and then posts a new chapter. Perhaps an option to control this.)

Oh, ok. Yeah, no, a story in the library should not be collapsed.

It appears that every story is now being excluded on my front page and stream. The reason given is 'Excluded Tag', but on the 'Category Exclusion Preferences' page in settings I can't see anything excluded. Is there some other place where excluded tags are set that I'm missing?

So I tried to exclude some authors using this method. My home page feed is showing many collapsed stories saying "excluded tag" but I have no tags selected to exclude.
All of the Halloween stories for example are hidden in this way!

PlaysWithWires ๐Ÿšซ

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

I also found that only the Blogs are showing, but: -
Go to the settings page and save without changing anything
The Home page shows only blogs
In settings, select one Tag, save it
Home page now shows all except the ones with that tag.
Go back and unset the tag (none set now)
Refresh the Home page
It should now show all stories.

It appears that the the first time save does not actually do anything unless at least one tag is set first. This has fixed My Stream as well, which had the same problem.

any way to keep the page the way it was? I "uncollapsed" the page but almost everything is collapsed again and I can't see anything. I was fine with the page the way it was and don't want to have to "uncollapse" everything every time I go to it.

I have only "pedo" selected in the "preferences" page.

Seeing the occasional anomaly where a new item on the home page stream shows up grey like it's been displayed previously but there's additional new items below that item. I took a screenshot of it if that helps.

I've seen it twice now, pretty sure it's only been since the new home page was released.

The grey item is definitely not one that was posted earlier on a refresh of the page, but might be something where the author has updated something since the previous update was made.

I normally use the grey items to know what I've seen before and stop scrolling but happened to see more white stuff below and found many other items not seen before.

I'm mobile now but I can upload the screenshot when I'm home if you'd like.

jimq2 ๐Ÿšซ

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

I experienced the same thing as whitedruid when I first logged in today. I had 3 stories that were grey scattered in the first 8 or 10 stories but the date and time of their update indicated that they were definitely posted after I had been on the site last night.

Replies:   Dinsdale

@jimq2

That is nothing new, I've been noticing that for a couple of years now.
I have never worried about it because the point of "greying out" is so we can see what was around the last time we looked. If there are "normal" entries below a grey one, it was just a false positive and I can live with the occasional one of them.

Where is the edit capability for genre exclusions? The category exclusions page shows an empty list for genre exclusions, along with reset and save buttons for it, but no editing.

At the same time I have a few stories on the home page claimed to be excluded by genre, but I am pretty sure I would not and did not exclude Fiction genre (particularly because I don't even see where to do it), which is the genre of the Michael Loucks story which was hidden.

Note: all that on a Samsung Android mobile. On a desktop with Chrome browser it shows Genre checkboxes.

However, still I don't know why it filters out Fiction stories when they are not selected to be excluded.

I was curious about that when it was Author Exclusion, but Lazeez fixed that (thanks!).

I don't have any Genres blocked, that one is supposed to specify the genre but curiousvisitor says that does not work (the posting with lots of bold text above), that does not affect me anyway.

Only the Tag block does not give me a clue as to which tag triggered it, but when I check it's almost always the AI one. I wonder how many of those contest entries fall into that category, I found some to be unreadable.

Not sure it's related, but I looked at updated stories this morning (looks like between 8:43 and 8:46 EST). Stories before 8:43 are grey. Stories after are varied. The next 4 are white. Sailor Moo is greyed out (like I'd already accessed it or at least seen updates or something similar). The next 11 are white, with Revenge with a grey background. Three white, one grey, one white, one grey. 2 stories and 3 blog entries white and another grey story.

I expect if I refreshed, they'd all turn grey. Generally, after I've seen the home page, going back turns things grey when I come back. I assume I "acknowledged" them, but the zebra effect is odd.

I will CTRL-F5 to refresh cache and see if it straightens out after the next couple of updates.

Go to the 'Up for Archival' page (link on Home page LHS at the bottom of the 'Top Lists' section), there's a button [All Archived Stories] at the top under the Nav.links which is actually All Premiere Stories (both author-selected and archived)

ETA: 16836 stories as of now; to quickly get to a page beyond 7 click on the larger, shaded selected page number and either hit the up/down keys or type in the desired page number, then either click anywhere outside the box or hit Return.

There are multiple ways to do that.

Click 'My Library', there is a link to 'Exclusive Stories' at the bottom of the left panel.

Other ways.

Click 'Advanced Search' and in the options section from the 'Premier' menu select 'Premier Only' and you don't have to enter anything else, and sort by whatever option you want. Whatever other options you use allow you to narrow your selection.

Same thing for the categories page.

Dinsdale ๐Ÿšซ

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

I was just on the main page, and there was no "Random story from the archives". Guess what, it got filtered. Excellent!
