She walked towards him but she was looking straight ahead. She was absolutely beautiful – long, wavy blond hair, extremely soft skin, and an extremely pretty face, even though he had never seen her smile. Though she didn’t smile, she didn’t look unhappy, just snobby. Girls that looked as good as her normally were.

She couldn’t have weighed more than 105 pounds. Even though Sureness Insurance Company had a younger staff, this girl looked like she was only 19 or 20. You had to be at least 18 to work at Sureness so he knew she was at least that old, but she definitely just seemed like someone with a very entry-level role.

She wore a light blue dress but what Adam Shepard really noticed about her was her nice little feet. She wore light blue flip flops that went well with her dress and her clear toenail polish went well with the flip flops too. Her feet were tiny, probably only a size 5, and the skin on them looked incredibly soft and smooth. Those petite little feet of hers looked like they’d be great to just hold in his long hands and massage for hours. He was now staring at them as she was getting closer to him – he found it pretty easy to stare at women’s feet without getting noticed and she was staring straight ahead as if he wasn’t there, making it even easier. Trying to talk to her wasn’t an option – attractive women didn’t want to talk to him and he wasn’t good at talking to attractive women. As he stared directly at her nice little feet as she walked by, he briefly looked up to see her still staring straight ahead and not noticing him. He turned the corner to the big pit where all of the cubicles were and had a seat at his desk.

Adam and the girl with the nice little feet walked towards each other in the same hallway. That was often where he saw her. This time she wore a black dress and had white flip flops on so he could still see her feet. He took a quick glance at them but then looked up, staring ahead confidently. He had to stop being a pussy, stop staring at her feet, and try to talk to her. Her name was Aurora Flanagan – he knew that because he had walked by her desk which was on the island right next to his but on the other side of the wall and he saw her nameplate hanging up. He couldn’t call her by name but it was good to know.

His palms were sweating and his arms were starting to shake a bit. Get a hold of yourself, you pussy, he said to himself. If he couldn’t speak clearly either, this wasn’t going to work. But she was looking straight ahead with that serious look on her face like she had no interest in even knowing who was walking towards her.

“Hi,” he said with a smile.

She didn’t respond, change her facial expression, or even blink. She just walked right by him. His heart was racing and his legs were shaking too, his palms soaked. He turned the corner to The Pit and felt like he was going to pass out. He stumbled towards his desk and sat down.

“Hi Patty,” Adam typed in the WebEx Instant Messenger. “I just got this XVBL Form uploaded to me. Ticket number is 4356769. States the customer is in Arizona but that doesn’t make sense because they don’t observe daylight savings time.” He knew Patty wasn’t the one who filled out the form but she always was able to help him figure out stuff like this. In what he guessed was her late fifties, Patty was a senior citizen at the company.

“Aurora sent that one over,” she wrote back promptly and directly. “You’ll have to go over and talk to her about it.”

Patty was old school and liked talking face-to-face as opposed to through messenger. He almost passed out trying to say ‘hi’ to Aurora so how was he going to approach her at her desk and have a conversation with her? Maybe he could just instant message her and ask her but Patty could get bitchy when she gave instructions that weren’t followed exactly and he didn’t want to have her on her bad side for when he needed help with other things. Plus, Aurora’s cube was on the same island as Patty’s, just on the other side of the wall. If he started IMing her questions and she started asking Patty too, Patty would make him feel stupid for not going over and make things worse.

He sat at his desk, his palms sweating again, wondering if there was a way he could just IM Aurora without it getting bad. He then got himself together. It was a damn work conversation, it wasn’t like he was going over to ask her on a date. This would be a good opportunity to get comfortable with her. He stopped thinking about it and stood up.

His arms started to shake and he started to hope that she wouldn’t be at her desk. But at 6’1 he could see over the walls pretty easily and he saw her blond hair at the desk. His legs were now shaking as he walked over there. He stood above her once he got to her desk and just like when he’d walk by her in the hall, she was staring at her computer screen with her stuck-up look on her face, showing no reaction to him being there.

“Hi Aurora,” he said as nicely as he could. She didn’t flinch and he could feel his heart beating faster. “Hi, s-s-s-sorry to bug you,” he said, and once that stutter began he knew he was in trouble. Things never once went well for him when he was talking to a girl and the stuttering started. She still didn’t flinch, though he saw the head of the girl sitting to the right of him turn. Was Aurora deaf? That thought made him a bit less nervous but if that were the case Patty wouldn’t have told him to just go over and talk to her. “I just need to talk to you about the Arizona XVBL form you just uploaded!” he said, a bit impatiently.

Aurora looked up at him, her facial expression still the exact same, but she didn’t look startled by his tone. “You don’t need to bug me,” she said, coldly. “I didn’t upload any form.”

Standing there in the aisle, his palms now soaked with sweat, Adam tried his best to not let it be known his limbs were shaking with plenty others sitting nearby to hear this exchange and he wondered if anyone was watching, Aurora looked back at her computer screen and started to type as if nothing had happened. He looked down and saw her thin, shapely legs that became bare right around her lower thigh where her green dressed ended. She wore the same light blue flip flops, the bottoms of them on the floor, but the way she was sitting, her right heel was elevated so it wasn’t touching the flip flop and he had a good view of her whole right foot. He could feel his cock rapidly filling with cum but this was a reaction he had sometimes when he had extreme anxiety – her foot was just the icing on the cake. He knew it was possible he could cum a bit in his pants now at any moment and he had light brown khakis on.

“It’s the Arizona XVBL Form, you just uploaded it. Patty told me to talk to you about it.”

Aurora continued to type and ignore him. She lifted her right foot off the floor, crossed her right leg over her left leg, and extended her right toes upward so the bottom of the flip flop was far away from touching her foot.

“Hey Adam, that’s Aurora Flanagan you’re talking to!” Patty yelled from across the other side of the wall with her unintentional loud, obnoxious sounding voice. “Aurora Cline is the one that uploaded the form.”

“Where does she sit?” Adam yelled back and Aurora’s slight shift indicated she was irritated.

“She’s over on Island Eight!” Patty shouted.

Wanting to be away from there as soon as possible, Adam walked away without saying thank you to Patty. He didn’t think she deserved one anyway. As he walked over towards Island 8 he thought about how much he disliked Patty at that moment. She obviously heard the whole conversation so why did she let it go on that long? And not even an apology for not clarifying that to begin with? How could people be so idiotic?

And then he realized something that made him want to jump out the nearest window – since he had never been formally introduced to Aurora Flanagan, there was no reason he should have thought to go to her desk. She now knew that he knew her name and exactly where she sat when she wouldn’t even look at him when he had said ‘hi’ in the hallway. This was an awful situation. Maybe he should just walk right out of the building, walk through the parking lot, and walk right into traffic on busy Central Street.

He walked up to Island 8 and saw the nameplate for Aurora Cline. She was sitting in her cube and he had a side view of her. She had long brown hair that was kind of wavy. She wore a green flannel with the sleeves folded up so most of her forearms were bare. She wore a tight pair of jeans and brown boots. Her face looked fairly pretty from the side – he’d normally be nervous talking to a girl like her too but after the intensity of talking to Aurora Flanagan, this seemed easy.

“Hey, what’s up,” he said as he stood above her with an uncharacteristic relaxed tone.

“Hey,” she said like they were friends that were familiar with each other as she looked up at him.

Her desk was set up like she had worked there for a while but he had never seen her before or even heard her name. That wasn’t uncommon at Sureness where there were over 400 employees in the building and they had high turnover. Aurora definitely had a girl-next-door look to her – some freckles, a nose that was a bit too big, and a couple of crooked teeth, but she was still pretty, especially her hazel eyes, and Adam guessed she’d look a lot better if when she touched herself up a bit. He guessed her to be in her mid-twenties.

“Patty wanted me to talk to you about that Arizona XVBL you just did.” He was surprised how smooth he sounded talking to her. He had never been this comfortable talking to a good looking girl he was first meeting.

“Yeah, she messaged me too. So it’s eleven in Arizona now, really?”

“Yeah, the only state in the US that doesn’t do Daylight Savings. I think there might be one more like Alaska or Hawaii or something too.”

“I totally never knew that. And I do a lot of work with Arizona clients. I wonder how many of these I’ve screwed up.” Adam could tell by the way she was talking that she worked there at least a few months, probably more.

“Probably not as bad as some of the things I’ve screwed up here,” he joked.

Aurora chuckled. “I’ll send you a new one in a bit.”

“Thanks,” he said.

Even his ‘thanks’ came out smooth and he liked the roll he was on with her but he figured it was better to quit while he was ahead and walk away. As much as he liked the feet of Aurora Flanagan, he wouldn’t mind getting with a girl like Aurora Cline either. But even with girls like that he could never get them interested. He was 33-years-old and still single while most of his friends were married by now, some for years. For over 10 years, people had been telling him his girl would come along soon, but it still hadn’t happened.

She walked towards him. She was taller than he realized – probably 5’7. They were in an open area but it was the end of the day and only those that preferred the later shift were still there so no one else was around at that moment. Her shoulders were broader and her legs a bit thicker than he realized when she was sitting down but she had a nice figure and walked smoothly. She wasn’t looking at him but she didn’t look standoffish the way the girl with the nice little feet looked when she walked. He wondered if it would be weird to say Hi to her when he had just met her earlier that day and then he thought he should stop overthinking.

“Hey Aurora,” Adam said to Aurora Cline.

“Oh hey,” she said and she looked at him. She seemed a bit startled but it didn’t make him uncomfortable.

“You’re one of the late workers too?”

“Yeah. I’m not an early riser, at least not when I have to go to work.”

“I’m the same way. You just heading home now?”

“Yup. Same as every night.”

“Any interest in getting something to eat with me somewhere?”

She looked surprised by the question. Adam had been playing it smooth and feeling comfortable through the whole conversation up to that point but now he was getting that nervous feeling that would always pop up eventually and just kill the deal for him once the girl saw it.

“Sure,” she said and he relaxed a little. “Why not?”

Why not was right, he thought. His position was senior to hers and although he was socially awkward around girls, he was a good looking guy, standing at 6’1 and a slim 175. It was natural she’d want to go out with him.

“Know where Hops & Wings is?” he asked.

“Sure do.”

“Meet you there in a bit. Dinner is my treat.”

Adam sat at the bar feeling in his element wondering if Aurora was going to show up. He ordered a quick shot of Southern Comfort and sucked it down. He didn’t want her to see him drinking a heavy shot like that right away but he needed to relax and that did the trick. He saw her walking towards him right after he finished it and he discreetly pushed the shot glass away.

She had a seat, he asked what she was having to drink, and she told him she’d like a Blue Light draft. It was nothing too hard but it wasn’t a weak girly drink either. They started talking just like 2 people hanging out and the conversation flowed naturally. He learned that her favorite hobby was horseback riding and she had a 4-year degree (not everyone at Sureness did).

They ate some wings and she wasn’t too sloppy eating them which he liked. They drank, but not too much. He was on a date one time thinking drinking a lot would relax him. The girl he was with followed suit, was outside puking after about an hour, and then snuck away with a ride from a friend.

Adam and Aurora started to played darts and she seemed to be enjoying herself. “Another drink?” he said when they finished a dart game that he won and she finished up her glass.

“No, that’s it for me,” she said and he was impressed that she didn’t sound even a bit tipsy after having a couple. “Even though I work the later shift, still gotta work tomorrow.”

“I’ll walk you to your car.”

“That was fun,” Adam said as they walked to her car. He liked when it was light after 8. “Perhaps we can hang out this weekend on Friday or Saturday.”

She kept walking, not seeming surprised by the question but not seeming excited either. “This weekend isn’t great. I’m riding my horse Saturday. Sunday maybe.”

She didn’t want to hang out with him because she was going to ride her horse. This was why he couldn’t meet girls because they always wanted to do weird shit instead of hang out. As he started to get annoyed, it occurred to him for the first time that maybe he was 33 and single because he got impatient with things that were different too easily.

“Can I watch you ride your horse?”

Now she stopped walking and looked at him like she was surprised. He started feeling embarrassed, like he wanted to be out of there. He had played the smooth act decent so far but he wasn’t a smooth guy and he knew it wasn’t going to last. He was back to that same nervousness and bumbling that happened when he couldn’t even ask the girl with the nice little feet about a fucking XVBL.

“You want to watch me ride my horse?” she said sounding surprised.

And of course she was surprised because it was such a fucking stupid thing to say. She probably did that to be alone or her whole family was going to be there riding their horses and talking about family stuff and him and his doofus-self who had just met her for the first time earlier that day was asking to be a part of it. He would try his best to play it smooth and try and avoid any further embarrassment but he could tell this was done.

“Sorry,” he said, sounding smoother than he thought he would. “I know I shouldn’t impose.”

She laughed a genuine laugh and he couldn’t help but laugh as well. “No, it’s not that at all,” she said, still laughing a bit but then she got composed, still smiling. “I’ve just never had a guy interested in my horseback riding before. I think most guys think I’m weird because I do it.”

“Well you learned about Arizona time zones and a guy asked to watch you horseback ride, two firsts in a day,” he said and she laughed again, making his confidence grow. “But why do you think a guy would think you were weird for horseback riding?”

“Cuz guys are weird.” She looked at the ground and for the first time since he met her she looked a bit nervous – maybe not nervous but she was showing that she had her own insecurities. “But I’m probably just overthinking.”

“Don’t do that. But I would like to come watch if it’s OK with you.”

“I think that would be really cool.”

They shared a smile, looked each other in the eyes, and had that awkward silence that normally led to a kiss. Only this was their first date, not even really a date, and he worked with her. He moved in for a hug, wondering if even that was too much. She seemed a bit hesitant but she hugged him back. Her hug was stronger than he expected, not so much a tight hug, but she just felt strong.

She wore a black helmet, a tight long-sleeved blue shirt, tight white pants, and a pair of boots that went up to her knees. Adam was hot wearing shorts and a t-shirt so he couldn’t imagine how she felt. She was petting the nose of a horse and talking to some older guy. She was laughing comfortably as she spoke with him and didn’t acknowledge Adam until he was standing next to her.

“Oh hey,” she said casually as she turned her head at Adam, not seeming startled. “Adam, this is Mister Greene.”

“Nice to meet you,” Adam said and he held out his hand for the man to shake. The man wore a white polo, jeans, and he had white hair. He had a weak looking frame and Adam was happy when he shook his hand and Mr. Greene felt weak.

“Spending your day here watching horses instead of spending all day at the gym and all night at the bar,” Mister Greene said jokingly. He sounded like an old man that needed to make an effort just to talk but he also spoke in a friendly way that made Adam feel comfortable. Mr. Greene then looked at Aurora while pointing at Adam.

“I can already tell you he’s a good one,” he said. Adam could feel himself blush a little but Aurora just laughed.

“Alright Mister Greene, well I will talk to you a bit later,” Aurora said. She turned to Adam. “And how rude of me? I didn’t even introduce you to my horse, Blaze. Blaze is such a good boy. Yes he is!” She was baby-talking the horse and she rubbed his nose hard, not really paying attention to Adam but then she turned to face him.

“I’m going to start riding him now,” she said. “Sorry there aren’t a whole lot of places for you to sit.”

Adam watched as Aurora rode Blaze around, seeming to be happy and in her element. He found it a bit meditative watching her be so happy about her hobby and it made him feel a bit bad about himself that he spent so much time on his weekends drinking.

He tried smiling at her a few times when she ran close to him but she kept doing her thing like he wasn’t even there. He then watched the horse do a pretty cool jump. Aurora looked him directly in the eyes right after it and he started to give her a thumbs-up but she looked away before she could see it.
