I was woken up with the ringing of my phone and a message of ‘Happy Birthday Grandson’ from both of my grandparents. It was 6am. Bloody 6am, they could have left it for a later time. I rolled over and fell asleep for another two hours. Then Dad started the mower under my window. That was it. My 19^th birthday and I was grumpy as hell. I used the bathroom, showered then shaved. Looking in the mirror I said to myself ‘don’t be a grump, enjoy your birthday, good things come to those that wish it.’ I smiled to myself and went back into my bedroom to dress. Today was going to be another warm day.

Walking into the kitchen a very happy mum and extremely pain in the arse sister all greeted me in a happy mood with ‘happy birthday’ I kissed each one and said thanks smiling outwardly. They did not know the reason for my grumpiness. My girlfriend of six months dumped me last week when she found out it was my birthday. To make things worse I overheard her tell her girlfriend “I only went out with him for car rides, I certainly don’t love it or willing to spend money on a present. Maybe in two weeks time I’ll ring him and get back together. I do need a boyfriend with a good car.’ To say I was pissed off being used like that did not sit well with me.

To really make matters worse my parents had booked two tables at the local show for my birthday, so we ended up having all of the family freeloaders coming as well. I put on a cheery face to show interest in my birthday. After breakfast I sat outside in the pool area sunbaking. My younger sister came out in her new one piece practically naked swimsuit. We arrived at 6pm and walked through to our table. Apparently there were four birthday people tonight. How did I know, well after the food and during the show, we were called up on stage and of cause the family and so called friends forced us up.
