I’m Shalini Ravindran, 28, happily married for three years. I moved to Chennai in 2017 after completing B.Sc. in Nursing. I got my job at the same hospital where I did my internship. It was where I met my husband. We eventually got together, married and started a new life in a small two-BHK apartment in Velachery, a few kilometres away from the hospital.

My job could be very demanding, sometimes I came home very late and left very early. My husband on the other hand worked as a Senior Site Engineer, which often involves travelling and staying in different places. There were times when we barely saw each other for an entire week. It was his understanding and the respect for each other’s profession kept us going.

This was a complete opposite in Brinda ma’s marriage. Brinda ma was my immediate neighbour. No matter how often she denied it, her strict, toxic, misogynistic husband had been ruining their marriage for a long time. The best example was the upbringing of their son, Rahul.

Rahul was doing third year in a third tier college in Velachery, with excellent academic grades, at least that’s what he made Brinda ma believe. On weekends, we could see him in all cosy places like theatres, beaches and malls. On week days we could see him in parks, corners in the apartment or in the parking lot with his then girlfriend Priya. The whole apartment knew about them, except Brinda ma and her husband, who thought their son was still a child who knows nothing other than academics.

It was February 8,2021. The day, Brinda ma left to her hometown and her husband went north for a two-week business trip. That was the first day Rahul took his girlfriend into his house, I saw them entering the house when I went to work and saw them leave when I came back. That day I knew something was about to go off, I knew very well that when it reached Brinda ma’s husband there was no stopping what would come.

But nothing happened on the next two days, it was the same pattern and on the third day when I returned to the apartment I saw Rahul lying in the parking lot. The day has come, but it hadn’t started yet, there was no one around.

I could have just ignored that and stayed out, but I didn’t want to be the person who failed to prevent the disaster and spend the next week or two thinking whether I should have done the different. So, I went close and tried to wake him up, just to realise he was on booze.

He stank. Beneath his breath, kept muttering Priya’s name.

I somehow felt pity for him and wanted to help. But I didn’t know what to do, I couldn’t call the watchman given the chances of the matter reaching Brinda ma’s husband. My husband was also out of town, and it was too late to call any friends. So I did the best I could do. I put the boy’s hand around my shoulder and tried to lift him. The boy cursed, but he did try to cooperate. We stumbled our way to the elevator as he put his entire weight on me. Once we entered, I put him against the wall and caught my breath. That’s the hardest thing I did in a very long time. I pressed the elevator button and opened my phone to send a message to my hubby.

There was only one tick. He had already slept, I realised and closed my phone.

Rahul was also sleeping against the wall as well, like a newborn baby. I checked his pockets and took his phone, bike keys and the keys to the house. When the door opened, I tried to pull him again to his house. The corridor was completely dark, I put the lights above the door and opened it with his keys.

The boy blabbered again. I switched on the interior lights as we entered the house. I had been there before, before when Brindama kept everything tidy and neat. It felt like a long time ago. Three days without her, the house was upside down. The soul of the house had been lost.

“Which is your room,” I said.

The boy blabbered again and pointed to a room. I literally dragged him into the room and put him in the bed. I finally sat down and caught my breath as he kept repeating Priya’s name. I took his phone and unlocked it with his fingerprint. The wallpaper was a cute picture of him and Priya sitting next to each other. I opened the contacts and was about to call Brinda ma when he gently grabbed my right hand and placed it on his manhood. I swiftly snatched back and got up.

A tear ran through his cheeks, he sobbed like an ill puppy. Seeing him in his weakest condition made me feel pity. I knew very well I wasn’t supposed to be there at that time, but I sat back.
