Horror Story: When a young couple moves into a new town, everyone wants a piece of their attention

JoBeth paused to catch her breath while shifting the towels from the washer to the dryer. Moving into a new city was a confusing whirlwind, with everything in different places in the new house, strange product brands at the grocery store, and all the phone numbers having new area codes.

And to top it off, there were all the visitors. It was like the realtor had sent out a public notice saying everyone come look at the new people! In only a week since moving into Lyon Estates, JoBeth and Ethan, together or separately, had been approached about Girl Scout cookies and Boy Scout BBQ chicken sales, pushed to buy decorative candles for the high school dance team fundraiser, briefed by the homeowners association about proper and improper garden choices, and visited by Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Mary Kay.

As she started the dryer, she heard a rapping from the front door. JoBeth frowned – why would anyone knock on the door instead of using the doorbell? And in the middle of the afternoon, at that. She paused at the hallway mirror to check her hair, then went to see.

The knockers were two women in severe business suits, both with the same brunette near-shoulder bob, each carrying a briefcase. “Good afternoon, miss.” They looked past JoBeth’s shoulders. “May we speak with you and your husband?”

JoBeth shook her head. “He’s at the office – is there something I can help you with?”

Both women seemed to move closer to the open door, and the one on the left smiled more warmly at JoBeth. “We’re from Pro-Family America, and we came to welcome you and your husband to the subdivision. Our organization helps couples like you get settled and supports you with information and resources as you start your new family!” The woman on the right lifted her briefcase slightly and patted it. “We won’t take much of your time, I’m sure you’re busy with moving in, we’ll just hit the high points.”

Both women launched into a confusing and overlapping discussion of families and marital relationships, sex positions to guarantee a baby girl or baby boy, techniques to keep a husband aroused, planning to find baby sitters and schools, what to do with yourself when your husband is working late at the office, their voices droning and crisscrossing making it difficult for JoBeth to keep up with any of the threads of conversation. Before she realized it, they were all in the sitting room with their materials scattered over the coffee table, a woman pressed close at either side, four-color glossy foldouts reflecting the overhead light, their voices colliding and surrounding her...
