This is a story of a young couple that met at a dance in the mid 1960’s; they had a romantic relationship for about one year before eventually breaking up and going their separate ways.

It all started at a Halloween dance in 1965. A young fifteen-year-old girl was working at the concession stand at a teen dance in her hometown. Although she was already quite wise to life in general and had been sexual with a guy once before, she would eventually meet the boy that at that time she thought would be hers forever.

He was a sixteen-year-old that came from another town, although that town was nearby; she had never met him before. He had never had a girlfriend and hadn’t ever dated anyone in the past either.

This evening, he and a friend decided to attend this dance, but they had also decided that it would be a good idea to get drunk first. They had bought a bottle of rye whiskey, and had shared it, neither of them had much experience with alcohol at this point, so they easily got drunk together, drinking half of the bottle prior to entering the dance, and then the rest of it at different intervals throughout the night.

The young girl’s name was Vicky, and the boy’s name was Albert. Before he had gotten overly intoxicated, Albert went downstairs to the concession at the dance. Behind the counter of the concession stand was Vicky and another girl. Albert got what he wanted and returned upstairs to the dance. What he didn’t know at the time was that Vicky had looked at her friend and said: “Don’t even think about it, he is mine.” For her, it was love at first sight.

Later in the evening, when Vicky had finished her shift at the concession, she went upstairs to the dance, and she was looking for that boy that she had seen at the concession, she hoped he would be alone and not with another girl, she wanted him, and she was prepared to do whatever it took to get him. It didn’t take her long to find him sitting on one of the benches upstairs.

She walked right over to him and asked him to dance with her. He had a look of bewilderment on his face but got up and danced with her. One dance turned into two dances, and two dances turned into dancing together for most of the night. Albert liked her, but he was drunk, and by this time, he was much drunker than he was when he went down to the concession. He and his friend had polished off that 26-ounce bottle of Rye Whiskey.

Vicky had done everything she could think of making Albert want her, but he was drunk; she had given him her phone number and asked him to call her the next day. Although he didn’t remember doing it, he had also given her his phone number.

That night at the dance, they had kissed each other often, she was enjoying it while Albert wasn’t sure what was happening.

The next day, a hung over Albert stayed in bed most of the day, he was hurting, but he did find Vicky’s phone number, he did remember her from the night before, but dismissed what had happened as if to say, why would she want me, and he thought that would be the end of it.

Then a few hours later, sometime after dinner, the phone rang, Albert’s dad answered the phone and said: “It’s for you.” Albert took the phone, and it was Vicky.

She began: “Hi Albert, it’s Vicky, I hope you remember meeting me last night at the dance, I know you were drunk, but I thought we had a good time.”

Albert was silent for a few seconds, but then he replied: “I remember, I think, you are a very good-looking girl.”

Vicky continued: “I was hoping you would come over and see me today, did you lose my phone number?”

Albert answered her honestly: “No Vicky, I didn’t lose your number, I just hadn’t figured out what a good-looking girl like you would want with me.”

Vicky then said with conviction: “I’m the one that should be wondering why a good-looking guy like you would want to dance all night long with me when there were so many other chicks looking for guys.” She continued. “Do you remember walking me home last night, do you remember kissing me good night? I loved that kiss, I loved all the kisses you and I had.”

Albert answered: “Yes, I remember where you live.”

Vicky suddenly became concerned: “Don’t you like me, Albert?”

Albert said: “It’s not that, it’s not that at all, I am just a little confused as to why you even care about me.”

Vicky said: “Will you come and see me?”

Albert answered: “It’s a little late now, how about tomorrow, tomorrow is Sunday, I could come over there tomorrow.”

Vicky was quick to answer: “Sure, tomorrow would be great, what time do you think you will get here?”

“Probably early afternoon, is that okay?” Albert asked.

It was obvious that Vicky was very interested in her newfound friend; she wanted that friend to turn to boyfriend.

The next afternoon, Albert, who didn’t have a driver’s license yet, walked over to where Vicky lived. He walked up to the door but hesitated for a long while. He walked away and thought about it for a while, he had never had a girlfriend, last night he was with a girl for the first time, but did she really like him, he knew that he liked her, but his shyness was holding him back.

Finally, we went back to her door and knocked, Vicky came to the door, and immediately gave him a big hug, “Come on in Albert, I want you to meet my family.” They walked into the house; it was obvious that this family was struggling through life financially. None of them had the newest clothing; the furniture was well used, but they all seemed happy. Albert’s family was only slightly better off.

Vicky introduced him to her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers, and her sister. She introduced Albert as her new boyfriend. He liked that, it made him feel a lot better about how she felt about him, maybe this isn’t so bad after all, maybe she does like me, he thought. They sat in the living room of the house for about an hour when Vicki asked him: “Would you like to go out for a walk Albert?” He agreed, and they got up and left the house. She did not live near the city, and there wasn’t much around, so they just walked and eventually sat and talked for a long while. The conversation was just general stuff, getting to know each other better. Albert was very shy; he had never dated a girl before, and he really felt awkward about everything that they talked about. Vicki had boyfriends in the past and was much more aware of what she wanted and what the boys wanted.
