Chapter 2

The classes Kevin Reeves was taking weren’t overly challenging which coincided with the amount of time he was doing in studying. He thought these classes were a guaranteed C grade which was all that was needed for him to graduate. Having a high-class standing wasn’t going to happen for him. Kevin jokingly wondered how many people asked their doctor what their class standing was in medical school.

Kevin, however, was putting in the effort to improve his social life. As it turned out, he was fairly successful in doing it. Initially, there was Corrine Linden who he was sitting next to in one of his classes. He suggested that maybe they should study together to which she agreed. That led to them studying in one of the study rooms at the library. Walking her back to her dorm resulted in a goodnight kiss. That led to a rapid progression in their relationship. After a few drinks at one of the local watering places, it would end with her straddling him in his car with the front seats reclined and them doing the nasty.

Kevin thought this was great but he had second thoughts when Corrine started mentioning or giving little hints that it would be nice if their being together would progress to more of a permanent relationship. Making love with Corrine was nice, but it wasn’t that nice as far as Kevin was concerned. Since Kevin was not looking for more in the way of a legal relationship with her, he reduced the time he was spending with her. He used the excuse that the basketball team practicing had started as the main reason he couldn’t be spending that much time with her.

Corrine sensed the cooling of the relationship and was nice enough not to push it. She may have realized that her comments hinting at marriage had caused this cooling, but she thought it was best to find it out now rather than letting Kevin string her along because he wanted to have sex.

It turned out that Kevin finding a replacement for Corrine was not that difficult. During the basketball season after a home game was played, most of the team’s players went to Mama’s for pizza. Accompanying this group there were several cheerleaders. Kevin started talking to Lori Plasner, who was a sophomore. He was attracted to her and it seemed she was attracted to him.

Lori was a girl of average height with a slim athletic figure. She was blessed with a very cute face surrounded by short brown hair. She lived in an apartment with two other co-eds off campus. It was her looks initially that attracted Kevin, but her outgoing personality solidified the attraction.

Kevin started dating Lori exclusively as he enjoyed being with and talking to her. The dates in a short time ended with some kissing and some fondling. When they were involved in having a make-out session, Lori had a way of wrapping one of her legs around one of Kevin’s legs and then humping against his thigh causing her clit to rub against it and be stimulated. It was in early March when Kevin received a phone call from Steve, the patent attorney.

“I thought you should know that the patent application was expedited and approved. It also has been approved in two other countries. As expected, I received notification from China that the request for a patent there won’t be approved as someone else they say has already applied for a patent on your invention. That as I said was to be expected, as they are always doing things like that to steal ideas they feel would benefit them. I have an idea about how to work around them doing that. At any rate, we now need to let the automobile manufacturers know there is something out there that can triple the range of the EVs which will make purchasing an EV type of vehicle more popular. Too bad we couldn’t make it less expensive although you did reduce the size of the battery pack which does compensate for the cost of the additional alternators. In the long run it will be less expensive to replace the battery pack when that time comes.”

“To let the manufacturers know what can be done to improve the range of an EV, I am going to contact an automobile magazine and tell of this invention or modification, whatever you want to call it that you did, and suggest they do an article on your idea. Don’t be surprised if someone calls you and wants to interview you. Tell them what you did and the benefits of your invention. Once the word gets out, if anyone contacts you about wanting to purchase your patent, just refer them to me.”

“I will, but in thinking about it and what you say this could turn into, I don’t want to see my picture in the article. I want to avoid publicity and keep a low profile.”

Steve said that was possible and just to tell that to the person who interviews him.

It was just over a week later when Kevin received a phone call from Dan Shiver who said he was a writer for an automobile magazine. He said he wanted to make an appointment to interview Kevin and see his automobile.

Kevin met with Dan and showed him his car. He explained how the idea of adding alternators came to him and what these additional alternators added to the driving range of the car. He explained the pros and cons of what this modification will do. He resisted Dan’s request for a photograph but Kevin did let Dan take photos of his car and these additional alternators.

Dan told him the article would be in next month’s edition of the magazine. He said he was going to title the article “The Game Changer.” It was Dan’s opinion that the automobile manufacturers would adopt this as it eliminates the major concerns in owning an EV.

The relationship Kevin had with Lori he sensed had taken a turn, and it wasn’t a turn for the better. It now was that she was having something to do when he was asking her out. He was told by a friend that she was dating another student. In thinking why that was, he thought it may have stemmed from a conversation he had with her about what he was going to do after he graduated.

Kevin never told her or anyone else outside of his parents about his invention. He did tell Lori he would probably be involved in the automobile business which technically was not a lie. Lori was aware that Kevin’s father owned an automobile body repair shop. Kevin she knew worked there during the summer and that he had rebuilt the EV he drove around in. She must have thought that she could do better in life if she became involved with someone who was more educated and didn’t work at an automobile body shop. The student that Lori was dating was Fred Lancer, who was a senior and had been accepted into medical school.

While Lori was attractive and a good love partner, it became apparent that she was also very materialistically orientated. Her being that way would have caused problems in the long run which made it better that Kevin found that out now rather than later. For sure he was going to miss the sex, but he was sure there were other women out there that could fill that need.
