Happy New Year

Posted at Updated:

As a one time thing - and don't bother whining, begging, or otherwise pestering me (I am, of course, open to large financial donations) I am posting a bonus chapter for the end of the year. I WILL post next week, and then we'll go back to every other weekend.

I'm about done with Chapter 20. This was NOT a good week for writing. There were over 500 fire department calls for frozen pipes here in Oklahoma City, because we simply don't build and insulate for weather to get and then STAY that cold here. That included more than 50 nursing homes / assisted living centers - including the one my wife works at. I've been cold before - I'm from Indiana, after all - but I've never stood in ankle deep freezing water for five hours, either, as I helped push water out and otherwise save charts, files, electronics and, oh, yeah, help the residents, at least until the disaster cleanup team could show up.

ETA: I'm NOT a firefighter. I have friends who are, which is why I know how many calls there were. I simply helped at the assisted living. I'm a full time RealtorĀ®.

Chapter 4 is in the queue for Saturday morning. I'm currently planning on posting Chapter 5 on New Year's Eve as a treat, but whether 6 shows up on January 7 or 14 depends upon how much I get written between now and then.

It's all of 3 degrees outside right now, with a wind chill of -22, but it's supposed to be 64 by next Thursday. I love winter in the South.

Chapter 3 in queue for Saturday

I just uploaded, after some final tweaks that haven't been edited (so don't blame anyone but me), for Saturday morning. My thanks to Aunty Social for remembering, about a week off, that Saturday is one of those days that when I was young was cool, but as I get older, is just a tick mark on a calendar.

Yeah, it's my birthday. Now, if this was a normal year, I'd give you all a present - two chapters. Of course, if this was a normal year, I'd already have the book complete. I'm about done with Chapter 19. I'm glad I started posting, so you all have something to look forward to. I'm sorry I started posting, because I really don't feel like I have a choice regarding every two weeks. I don't know that I'll actually have it complete by the end of February, even. The amount of research - and then, of course, the whole 'squirrel' thing that comes from that research is absurd.

Just as an example, did you know that when you win the Heisman, they give you a case to bring it home with? But you don't get to KEEP the case, you have to send it back? If you want a carrying case, you have to buy one yourself. Oh, and the most commonly broken piece on the Heisman trophy is the fingers. There's a guy here who repairs them, so he's seen and touched about 80% of ALL Heisman trophies that have been awarded. And I do mean HERE - they're made at MTM Recognition, in Del City, Oklahoma (and until March, THAT was less than half a mile from my house). Of course, that's NOW, not in 1985, but I think you get my drift.

Hey, I was nice! Chapter 3 does NOT end in a cliffhanger. (I'm not making the same comment regarding Chapter 4. (Evil chuckle))

Happy Thanksgiving, Chapter 2 queued for Saturday

The only Black Friday shopping I'm doing is for a new tire. I hit a curb yesterday by accident. Didn't damage the wheel, but blew the sidewall out on the tire. I had the donut on in 10 minutes, then five minutes for the compressor to inflate the donut to 60 psi from flat.

It's funny, but way back when I was going through testing to get on at the car factory, one of the skill tests they made us do was change tires on a board. Literally pick up a full tire and put it on studs, screw them down, then take them off again. You were timed on how fast you could do that. Of course, when it came time to actually do that in the factory, you'd put the tire on the car, hand start the five lug nuts, then bring this big machine in that would tighten all five of them at the same time and properly torque them, too. Took about 30 seconds per tire. The big dinosaur in the back, though, that mounted the tires on the wheels and balanced them? It could do a full set of five (the four and the spare) in 90 seconds.

There's a prologue, a character list that will be subject to editing (which is why it's being uploaded now), and, of course, Chapter 1. (Chapter 121 in my internal counting system.) Chapters will post every TWO weeks until I finish getting things written and the Bookapy version ready, then they will post every week here.
