"David, this is Harmon Geis. He and the Attorney General wish to speak with you. I told them that you were recovering from multiple gunshot wounds, and a stabbing, and might simply fall asleep from the drugs, and they are fine taking that chance.
"Are you up to visitors?" Roberta was being very kind, because she knew I couldn't deny the Attorney General, so she could lay it on as thick as she wanted, and enjoy their responses.
"Sure," I said, knowing there wasn't anything that would change the inevitable.
The two men came in immediately, preceded by bodyguards, and what I took to be administrative assistants. The Attorney General hadn't changed at all. He was still tall, good looking, and determined to repair the damage his processors did to the office. Mr. Geis was in his late fifties; stoop shouldered, and had the most open, friendly face I had seen in years. I immediately liked him.
"David," the AG said, holding out his hand. "I am very pleased to meet you. Your exploits are almost the only thing anyone wants to talk about in 'official' Washington, today. Thank you for what you did out on the street, in Knoxville, and later at the hospital. We are proud to know that America is still churning out good men."
He stopped talking and turned to Mr. Geis. "David, let me introduce you to Harmon Geis. You stopped those terrorists yesterday, before they could kill Mr. Geis' wife, Alexandra, and their two children, William and Katy." He stopped talking and let Harmon Geis have his say.
"David, I am eternally in your debt. You saved my whole life and had no idea you were doing it. That's what makes a hero. It's when people do good without knowing how good, and you did something really good.
"I have instructed our attorneys to pay all of your hospital and rehab bills. It's the very least I can do for the young man who saved my Alex, Willie, and Katie. I want you to know that you have a friend for life, Mr. David. You call this number," he handed me a very beautiful business card, "and no matter who answers that phone, they will know to help you with anything you need.
"David, you can use our private jets, hotels, and resorts like they were your home, and you can call if you have trouble with those people who tried to hurt my babies and wife. I have hired some very serious looking people to keep them safe, and offered to do the same for you, but the Attorney General, here, he says they are seeing to your safety, or I would pay for it with joy.
"Please accept my thanks, my friendship, and my gratitude. When you are out of this hospital, we are planning a get together at my vacation home, just to celebrate our good fortune, and reward you for your heroism.
"Now, I know you're hurt very badly, and we will not stay and tire you out so much, but please, humor an old man, and come to my house so we can throw a party to thank you."
He was so sweet, kind, gentle, and truly real, that I automatically loved him! Roberta saw it, as did Aunt Fran who showed up while Mr. Geis was speaking. We all responded the same way to his sincerity, and kindness.
