Preface

Somewhere in the South-American rainforest, a tribe of hunters, gatherers, fishermen, farmers, miners and warriors has survived largely undetected by modern civilisation. The occasional gold digger passes through their territory, but both sides usually avoid contact. That is not to say, however, that the Moaré (which is the tribe's name) would be ignorant about modern society: Quite the opposite is true. In fact, they regularly send people to the nearest towns ('near', in this case, being a very relative term) to trade modern goods for small amounts of precious metals and rare plants. And to learn about what is happening in the outside world. It was thanks to that knowledge that at one point the Moaré learned about plans of a wealthy farmer to expand his crops far into the jungle, coming close to the tribe's own territory. So it came to pass that the wealthy farmer and his work crew entered the rainforest one day, but never returned. The Moaré can take care of themselves. They adapt as little as they have to and as much as they want to, but choose to retain their own way of life, instead of adopting someone else's.

Oh, one more thing. This is a work of fiction. In case you hadn't noticed. So what is described here is not real. No way. So don't try to blame me for anything the Moaré do. It's not real. THEY're not real. And don't blame me for writing about it either, because you can hardly blame me for writing about something someone who doesn't exist doesn't do. Right? (If you think you can, go read some lawyer stuff and leave me alone! No offense.)
