Chapter 3
I felt a little excitement as I opened the book to the first page. There in a spidery script was a simple sentence.
This is the Lea family Grimoire,
A collection of knowledge on all subjects Magical
Written by the Lea family and their Vassals.
The Lea family. I now had somewhere I belonged. It felt odd knowing that I considered myself more a Lea than a Walker but this day's events had certainly changed my outlook on things.
I quickly reread the letter a few times to memorise it and then put it back in its envelope and hid it with the cardboard box in one of my drawers underneath a few sheets. Then settling myself on my bed I turned the first page and began to read about Magic.
After two hours of reading I had a basic grasp on Magic. It was a simple force that existed all through the Universe and in theory everyone possessed Magic as it was inherent to life. Everything living both used and created Magic somehow though the book wasn't clear on how living things used magic it outlined the fact that every time someone ate, drank, slept or had sex they replenished their magical stores.
At that point the book had started outlining how a new Mage would have to either be prepared to eat and sleep a lot or find a few willing partners for regular sex. Apparently it was common practice for Mages to bind others to them in a special magical contract where the Mage gets loyalty from the Vassal (As the book called them) and in return when the Vassal served the Mage they would be gifted with an increase in Magical potential to the point where they could learn some Magic to help out the Mage they have a contract with.
To me it seemed like some kind of slavery but the book did say that the contract had to be entered into willingly and could in theory be broken but the advantages were too numerous for both parties for them to consider it. I didn't spend too long on that though and instead read about different Schools of Magic and what they could do.
From what the book had written I would be a natural at Death Magic which I thought to be kind of cool. I'd always thought that the whole Harry Potter kind of Magic wasn't very realistic and that the darker medieval interpretation was much more exciting and it seemed closer to the truth. Mages were apparently well known for being laws unto themselves and doing whatever they like once they had power.
The Evocation, Warding and Mind schools all looked really cool too. Being able to mess with people's heads certainly sounded useful, as did protecting myself and my home but the idea of conjuring the elements and manipulating them really excited me. As soon as I saw the notes on Evocation my mind had turned to the cartoon, The Last Airbender. I had always thought it would be cool to be able to summon fire or control water and now I'd be able to learn how!
Some of the most interesting parts though were on Demons. Clearly my real dad and his dad must have added a lot to this section as it was very detailed, and I could distinguish my grandfathers and fathers writing easily now.
From what I had read my new found heritage would have a big impact on my Magical training giving me loads of short-cuts to learning the difficult stuff. Demons naturally had large reserves of Magic and were much more able to tune into Dark Magic and bend it to their will. I checked for any drawbacks such as having to eat a virgin heart every week or some such nonsense but there wasn't anything other than a little note stating that Demons apparently had very large sex drives. I'd always known that I focused too much on sex but now it appeared there was a legitimate reason for it.
