The October air in Wexford carried the smell of woodsmoke and something sweeter underneath, spiced cider, maybe, or the last of the summer roses clinging to life. Jason Miller adjusted the mask of his Spiderman costume and watched his wife fuss with the wire-rimmed glasses that completed her Aunt May getup.

“You keep pushing them up your nose,” he said. “They’re supposed to sit low.”

Carol shot him a look over the frames. “They’re plastic. They don’t sit anywhere. They just slide.”

Across the cul-de-sac, a papier-mâché dragon head turned on a pivoting neck, its eyes glowing with little LED bulbs. The neighborhood had gone all out. Orange string lights crisscrossed between mailboxes, and a fog machine chugged somewhere near the communal fire pit, sending synthetic mist curling around everyone’s ankles.

Shelly emerged from the house last, and Jason felt the breath leave him for a second. Not because of anything inappropriate, she was his daughter for God’s sake, but because the costume was effective. The black catsuit gleamed under the porch light, hugging her frame like it had been painted on. The zipper ran from throat to sternum, currently pulled to just below her collarbone. A belt cinched her waist, and the faux leather boots came up to her knees.

“Dad. You’re staring.”

“I’m admiring the craftsmanship,” he said. “That’s a lot of stitching.”

Carol laughed, looping her arm through his. “Leave her alone. She looks fantastic. Doesn’t she look fantastic?” “Stunning,” Jason agreed, and meant it.

Shelly twirled a pair of plastic claws on her fingers. “The ears kept falling off, so I glued them to a headband. It’s not perfect.”

“Nothing is,” Carol said. “That’s why we have wine.”

They crossed the street together, joining the flow of costumed neighbors. A woman dressed as a witch carried a cauldron of something that steamed and smelled of rum. Two men in matching pirate outfits argued good naturedly about who had the better eye patch. Children, actual children, Jason noted with relief, darted between legs, their candy buckets already half-full.

A man in a werewolf mask approached, extending a hand. “You must be the Millers. I’m Greg. We’re three doors down. The house with the blue shutters.”

“Jason. This is Carol, and our daughter Shelly.”

“Welcome to Wexford. First Halloween here?”

“First one with all this,” Carol said, gesturing at the fog and the lights and the growing crowd.

Greg’s grin was visible even through the mask’s rubber snout. “Oh, you’re in for something special. Wexford’s got a reputation.”

“What kind of reputation?” Shelly asked.

“Let’s just say things happen here on All Hallows Eve that don’t happen anywhere else.” He winked, or maybe it was a twitch of the mask. “Stick around. You’ll see.”

He melted into the crowd before Jason could ask what he meant.

The party centered on a long folding table laden with food: deviled eggs arranged like eyeballs, a meatloaf shaped into a hand, punch that glowed faintly green under a black light.

Someone had rigged a speaker system, and “Monster Mash” competed with the crackle of a fire pit large enough to roast a small animal.

Shelly drifted toward the fire, drawn by its warmth. The catsuit didn’t offer much insulation, and the October chill had started to seep through the fabric. She held her hands toward the flames, watching the sparks spiral upward.

A woman appeared beside her, mid-forties, dressed as a fortune teller with a velvet head-wrap and gold hoop earrings that caught the firelight. “You’re new,” she said. It wasn’t a question.

“We just moved in. August.”

“And you came tonight. Good. The neighborhood needs fresh energy.”

Shelly smiled politely. “It’s a great party.”

“It’s more than a party.” The woman’s voice dropped, conspiratorial. “You know what tonight is, don’t you? The veil between worlds thins. Anything can happen. Anything.”

“I think that’s just the fog machine.”

The fortune teller laughed, a sound like wind chimes. “You’ll see. The pets feel it first. They always do.” Shelly frowned. “Pets?”

But the woman had already turned away, her velvet skirts swishing against the pavement.

Jason found Shelly a few minutes later, two cups of the glowing punch in his hands. “You okay? You look spooked.”

“Just a weird conversation.” She took the cup, sniffed it. “What’s in this?”

“No idea. I saw a bottle of Everclear earlier, so pace yourself.”

They stood together, watching the party swell. More neighbors arrived, most in costume, some simply wearing masks. The fire pit popped and crackled. The fog machine coughed out another plume. Somewhere, a dog barked, then another, and another, until a chorus of howls rose from every direction.

Jason and Carol left Shelly by the fire as they moved around mingling with the neighbors.

Carol wanted to meet the woman with the rum cauldron. Jason wanted to find whoever had brought the good bourbon. They disappeared into the crowd, leaving Shelly alone with the flames and the fog and the growing chorus of howls.

It wasn’t long before Shelly was joined by two guys dressed in dog costumes. One was a doberman and the other was a great dane. Shelly couldn’t believe how good their costumes were, she couldn’t see where the seams were on them or see any zippers.

“Nice costume,” the doberman said. His voice was low, easy. “Cat caught in the wrong crowd.”

“Maybe I like the wrong crowd,” Shelly heard herself say.

The great dane laughed, a rumble in his chest. “She’s quick. I’m Max.” He jerked a thumb toward his companion. “This is Brutus.”

Both guys caught Shelly’s eye and she felt her pulse raise and her breathing coming in gasps as she talked with the two who introduced themselves as Brutus and Max. It wasn’t the punch, or maybe it was, the Everclear curling warm through her veins. It wasn’t the fire. It was the way they stood close, one on each side, their shoulders brushing hers, their voices pitched low beneath the music. The way Brutus’s gaze kept dropping to the zipper of her catsuit. The way Max’s hand hovered near the small of her back, not touching, not yet, but close enough that she could feel the heat of his palm.

“So,” Max murmured, “you want to see what Wexford does on All Hallows Eve?”

Shelly swallowed. The fire popped. Somewhere, the howls grew louder.

Brutus stepped closer, his body blocking the firelight, casting her in shadow. His fingers found the zipper tab at her throat, and he tugged it down, one slow inch, then another, the metal teeth separating with a sound like a whispered secret. The catsuit parted, exposing the hollow of her throat, the curve of her collarbone.

“You’re not cold anymore,” he murmured. It wasn’t a question.

His mouth found her skin before she could answer. His tongue traced the line of her collarbone, warm and deliberate, tasting the salt of her and the lingering sweetness of the punch. Shelly’s breath caught. Her hands came up to push him away or pull him closer, she wasn’t sure, but Max caught her wrists gently, pressing them to her sides.

“Easy,” Max breathed against her ear. His hands slid from her waist, fingers splaying across her hips, then lower, tracing the seam of the catsuit where it hugged the curve of her ass. The fabric was thin, slick, and his palms were warm through it. He squeezed once, slow, and she felt herself arch into the touch despite herself.

“Someone might see,” she managed.

“Let them.” Brutus pulled the zipper down another inch, his breath hot against her sternum. “That’s the point of tonight. The veil thins. Everything comes through.”

Max’s hands slid lower still, hooking under her thighs, lifting her slightly off her heels. The fire crackled behind them, the howls rising like a hymn. Somewhere in the fog, Carol laughed at something the rum-witch said. Jason was probably three bourbons deep by now. No one was watching.

No one except the neighborhood.

“Wexford’s got a reputation,” Brutus said, straightening. His eyes caught the firelight, and for a second, just a second, they didn’t look quite human. “You want to find out what it is?”

Shelly’s zipper hung open to her navel. The night air kissed her skin. And somewhere deep in her chest, something wild and hungry stirred awake.

Max’s hands slid from her hips, fingers finding the open edges of the zipper and slipping inside. The catsuit parted for him like a second skin, and his palms pressed flat against her stomach, warm, rough, real, before sliding lower.

She sucked in a breath as his fingers traced the waistband of her panties beneath the costume, teasing the elastic, then dipping below.

The fabric was thin. Soaked through. He didn’t need to ask.

“Christ,” he muttered against her ear, and the word was almost reverent. His middle finger slid along her slick heat through the cotton, pressing just enough to make her hips jerk. “You’re already there, aren’t you? Been thinking about this all night.”

Shelly couldn’t answer. Brutus’s mouth was on her throat, teeth grazing the tendon, and Max’s finger had found her clit through the ruined fabric, circling slow and deliberate. The catsuit hung open to her navel, her breasts bare to the cold air and the firelight, and she was trembling, from the chill or from something deeper, she couldn’t tell anymore.

“The veil’s thin,” Brutus murmured against her skin. “But not as thin as this.” He tugged at the soaked cotton, and it tore with a sound like a whisper.

Max laughed low in his throat. “Good girl.”
