A Common Life

Chapter 1
I was born a rat. Well that is what they call us anyway. It's a racial slur, I have been called cheese-eater, filth monger, rat, brid(short for hybrid), killer, soulless, and even worse things. You think I care about being called rat ... not really, don't flatter yourself. I would say we are at the bottom of the totem pole, but then there are the aliens. They are why we are even tolerated anymore.
The first non terrestrial based war started over 40 years ago, shortly after our last terrestrial war stopped. We found ourselves in an organic rich environment. Translated: lots of aliens. They weren't too happy that we decided to start collecting them and cutting them open to study. They didn't have nice shiny space vehicles, so they must be lower life forms. They weren't. They just adapted to having all organic based items. And they weren't as stupid as we assumed they were either. And it didn't make as out of them. But we sure did feel it. They tracked us back to our origin point. Back to our system.
Science has found its way to the stars, and those among the stars, they found their way to us. Not like it was the next day after we invaded their system. We stumbled a way to create a rip in space and fling ourselves to unknown regions. You give a baser(100% baseline dna human) a toy and he will find someway to make trouble with it. I mean once we have a location set we can lock in a coordinate so anyone with a regulated jump drive can go. I have been on military ships where they have micro jump drives installed, so that it is able to sustain several mini jumps before it has to recharge the engines on it. And we do have normal speed which is almost the speed of light. So we thought ourselves pretty advanced. We always were too damn arrogant of a species.
Of course they just didn't find their way to us after the first trip either. We went there. We collected several of their species. We kill them, disect them. They notice. They kill the ship that was doing the disecting and killing. We are outraged. We invade full force. We win. We set up shop. They come back with an even bigger force. We lose. We go again with a bigger force. They have have more reinforcements since the last time, we lose again. We say screw it, and nuke the hell out of every planet in the system ... We dont' really win, we barely make it out with a few remaining survivors. They hunt us down.
Of course that is like 35 years of condensed into a few minutes. But that is how it went down. And of course with the threat of the extiction of the human race. Hybrid program is reopened. And here I am. Not that I am a lab created specimen. That was my grandfather.
