"I just wish ... I just wish that for ten seconds I could sit next to you and not have to please you, or hook up with you, or give you something to make you happy. God..."
"Look, we knew that this was just hooking up from the start ... you obviously thought that it was something more..."
"Excuse me? I thought it was something more? You're the one who wouldn't let me go to movies with my best guy friend!"
"Because I knew he wanted to get in your fucking pants! I was watching out for you, because a part of me did actually care about you enough to watch out for you!"
"Oh god..." The same place where it had began, it ended.
We were next to a swimming pool ... this time, mine. I walked out on him.
I grabbed my cell phone from my bag, and went out into the front yard with it. I had his number memorized, but still found him in my phonebook just for the fun of it.
"Hi ... it's Lauren," I said when he answered. "Can we talk?"
Fifteen minutes later, we were sitting in the kitchen, me pouring out my guts while he dug around in her cabinet for some pretzels. Man that kid had one huge addiction to pretzels. It was actually kind of funny.
I finished, and watched him eat pretzels. He slowly absorbed it all as he crunched on pretzel after pretzel. He always ate them the same way too, like I did. First the round parts, then the crisscross.
He slid the bag across the counter to me, and I dropped a handful onto the counter in front of me. I ate them slowly.
We didn't say anything for a while.
Then I felt myself getting more and more upset. My eyes started itching, and then tearing. I knew what it really was, I was crying.
I knew it was true when a big drop landed on the counter in front of me. I sniffled quickly, and tried to wipe my eyes.
Then he stood up, and came over, slowly wrapping his arms around me.
I eventually relaxed against him, letting the tears fall freely.
So by now you're probably like, what the hell is going on? This book is so screwed up. So here's the truth.
