It is summer, twilight. The ball game ended twenty minutes ago. Extra innings. Jenny adjusts herself atop a picnic table in the park not far from the ball field. The wood is old, rough in some places, worn smooth in others. When she shifts a certain way the table wobbles. She finds a splinter and pulls it free. Atop another picnic table twenty feet away from Jenny’s, still in uniform, her twin brother Webb sits with his friend and teammate, Tommy Hart, who she’s had a crush on since sixth grade, six years ago. In the fall they’ll all be seniors. Webb and Tommy are deep in conversation, and then both glance at Jenny, look away, and something else is said. Webb and Tommy laugh briefly, more of a pair of snorts than laughter. Unbidden, an image flashes in her mind: Webb in her mouth, Tommy in her ass. The table wobbles.
