Jenny and Felice had grown up together in the way only a girl and a lamb can—side by side from the moment Felice wobbled onto her tiny legs. Jenny had been the first thing Felice saw, the first warm voice she recognized, and the first friend she ever adored. Wherever Jenny went, Felice followed with soft, determined hooves and a devotion that made the whole farm smile.
One breezy afternoon, Jenny skipped toward the white picket fence that divided the upper meadow from the lower. Felice trotted behind her, ears flicking happily. But then Jenny did something unexpected: she hopped over the fence in one smooth, practiced motion.
“Come on, Felice! See how easy it is—you can do it,” she called, brushing grass from her knees with a hopeful grin.
Felice blinked. She walked to the fence, considered it, then simply stepped around the end and rejoined Jenny with a satisfied little bleat. Jenny laughed, hopped back over, and tried again. And again. And again. Each time, Felice trotted neatly around the side, as if to say, Why jump when the path is right here?
