It was a foggy night; in the early evening, the nights were just turning cold. The streetlight hadn’t come on yet. He sat there watching the house, no one had entered it, no one had left. But someone was there.
He had been sitting there for most of the day. The police officer stopped and asked if he was ok, and why he was sitting there.
He looked at him and I don’t know. Just sitting. Watching. No reason.
The officer said, “I’ll be back later to check on you.” And turned to walk his beat.
The man sat there, not saying a thing to anyone, just sitting staring at the house.
The streetlights came on, the light in the second floor window came on. He sat there staring.
A woman with a little girl, came out the front door of the next house over. The little girl asked, “What is that man looking at?”
The woman looked toward the man and quickly hurried the child away.
The man didn’t look away, just stared at the light in the second floor window.
