INTRODUCTION:

My wife, Julie, and I, Roger, have both lived as committed full time nudists from early childhood. For us being nude has always felt natural and normal and we are nude for all of our everyday activities. We are also aware that the level of nudity that our two families have experienced is not very common.

My sister, Susan, and I grew up nude together. Raised from childhood in a nude environment we never associated nudity with sexuality. Our ability to live as full time nudists was made possible by our parents, our supportive friends and the home that we lived in.

This is the story of how my parents provided us with a home and support that made our wholesome nudist lifestyle possible.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

My parents, Benson and Marion, met at an inter-school Thanksgiving dinner dance in 1946. They soon became a couple and, that spring, she introduced him to social nudism at a rustic campground in Wisconsin. There they were respected not because of social status, fashion, or physical attributes, but on their character and personality. The loved social nudism and dreamed of living in a place where they could live nude and entertain their friends, indoors and outdoors all year round.

They married in June of 1948, two weeks after Marion received her business school degree. She continued to work at her office supply store job while Benson finished his studies at Illinois Tech University in Chicago. They lived in a small apartment near his school but were unable to be nude there due to lack of privacy. In June of 1949 their daughter, Susan, was born.

A few weeks before his graduation with an engineering degree, Benson received an excellent job offer from an old acquaintance. They needed a good fluids and thermodynamics engineer, just his specialty. The position was with a small start up company developing rocket engine components in San Diego, California.

A NEW CITY

In October of 1950 the family of three, Benson, Marion and baby daughter Susan, moved from Chicago to a modest, furnished rental home in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. Benson immediately went to work at the nearby Consolidated Aircraft ( later Convair then General Dynamics ) plant while Marion established their new household.

I, their son Roger, was born in October of 1951. The following May Marion decided that it was time, after a three year suspension, for the family to resume being nudists. She did a little research and found two local nudist camps: Swallows Sun Island near Alpine and Samagatuma near Ramona, both a 40 minute drive. Their nudity, however, was still limited to home indoors and the occasional weekend afternoon at one of the nudist camps.

THEIR FIRST HOME

Then, in May of 1954, thanks to the success of one his company’s products, they were able to afford to move to a new tract home with a small backyard on Jemez Drive in the developing Clairmont area. After the move Benson continued to work long hours, usually six days a week, while Marion remained home to care for the children and manage the domestic responsibilities.

The economically built home had no air conditioning, an inadequate heating system, and minimal insulation, all of which made it cold in the winter. No matter what Marion did the house was still too cold for nude living from December through March. During the other months there was usually a cool breeze from the ocean, so the lack of air conditioning was not a factor, especially if they were nude. The small back yard offered little privacy making outdoors nudity impossible. So the family was forced to become seasonal indoor nudists.

After Susan started school Marion, having some free time, found a part time home based bookkeeping job with a local accountant. That allowed her to stay home to do her job, housework and raise Susan and me. During the warm months Marion and the kids were nude most of the time. If not working late Benson would undress as soon as he got home and enjoy dinner and playing with the kids. On the occasional Sunday our family would spend the afternoon at either Swallows or Samagatuma. After a couple of years Benson had a big fence and some decorative screens put up for privacy and we were able to be nude outdoors.

A NEW DIRECTION

In 1959 Benson and his company were awarded patents for some key rocket engine component designs. They sold the lucrative rights to the system for a substantial sum. That event marked the turning point in Benson and Marion’s lives. They thoroughly deliberated their options, evaluating their personal aspirations and alternatives over several months. Finally, on a cold Valentine’s Day they came up with a plan that would satisfy their individual aspirations.

Although their investments would not yield returns for two years they decided that, after his three year commitment, Benson would resign his position and follow his dream of being a high school math and science teacher. They also decided to invest in building a custom home in the country where they could practice family nudism the year round. Benson would reduce his working hours and be home to design and coordinate the construction of their new home. With her accounting background, Marion would manage the household budget, investments and the construction budget.

In April of 1960 Benson and Marion resolved that we were going to become a full time nudist family both at home and socially. We would continue to attend typical work and other expected social functions, but when possible any new social friends would be other nudists. At a family meeting with Susan, 10, and me, Roger, 8, they explained what it meant to be a nudist and how everyone was expected to behave, especially when interacting with non-nudists. At their next visit to Swallows the family became official life members.

In October Marion start working full time as an accountant at the Pacific Telephone Company’s billing department. It was a good paying job that the family hoped would help attain their goal of building their country home sooner. However, it temporarily changed the family’s weekday living dynamic. Susan and I were at school until 3 PM. Marion would return from work at 4:30. Fortunately, a retired neighbor friend, Mrs Suarez, agreed to watch the children at her home until Marion returned from work. This arrangement worked well even after we moved away. We moved to our new home before the end of the school term. So for those four weeks Marion would take us to school in the morning and we would wait at the Suarez home until Marion could pick us up after work. Mrs Suarez never discovered that she was caring for the children of a nudist family that had lived right next door.

MAKING A DREAM HOME

Early in the spring of 1961 Benson and Marion acquired a secluded five acre hillside property on Bridon Road, just West of Alpine and only five miles from Swallows nudist camp. It was at the curved end of a short dead-end road so there would be no traffic. The nearest neighbor was over 500 feet away and slightly downhill. The steep rising terrain across the street was too rugged for development. A small distance from the road the property had an elevated plateau and then fell steeply downhill to the valley below. Privacy was provided by the slight curve in the road, mature oak trees and several enormous boulders, all which combined to shield the developable parts of the property from view.

Now Benson and Marion could concentrate on the features, layout and design of their nudist dream home. It had to be large enough to entertain friends, and private enough so everyone could be nude anywhere inside and outside, including the front entry. Within a few weeks a design was submitted for approval by the county, a building contractor was selected and construction started.

All that summer, on our way to Swallows, we would stop and review the construction progress. First the lot was graded to provide a flat area for the house and back yard. A second flat area was created a little down hill, creating a split level yard. Then the underground utilities and foundation were installed. By late July the floors had been poured, the walls framed up and the roof sheathing had been put on.

On a warm October Sunday morning, on our way to Swallows, we stopped as usual. Usually we would be dressed while touring the construction site but this time Benson and Marion undressed by the car at the roadside. Susan and I quickly followed suit. That was the first time our family was nude together at the new house. We conducted our first nude family tour of the house and property. Using a stick Benson outlined where the swimming pool and deck would be. He then marked where the stairs would be to the lower yard. The trees and boulders had done their job and made most of the house not visible from the road. Marion put her t-shirt on and we continued our drive to Swallows, this time with Benson and the kids remaining nude. The first of many nude drives between home and camp.

Construction continued on schedule during the following Fall and Winter of 1962. Two heating and air conditioning systems were installed. The Spanish tile roofing and a maximum amount of insulation would combine to keep the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The swimming pool, deck, driveways, patio covers and enclosed front porch were completed by the end of March. After property cleanup and landscaping were completed the house was ready for final inspection. Benson and Marion met with the contractor, conducted a final inspection tour and accepted the property. The house was ready for our family to move in.

Marion took leave from work the last week of April to supervise the delivery of the new kitchen appliances and furniture. On Friday the movers transferred the last of our furniture from the Jemez Drive house to our new home on Bridon Road. At 3000 sq ft the house more than twice the space of their old tract home and Marion was certain that we would need larger den sofas and bedroom furniture, especially for the master suite. Later that afternoon she collected Susan and me from Mrs Suarez and headed to our new home, where Benson would be waiting.

THE NEW HOUSE

When we arrived at the house we parked in the driveway and entered the enclosed front porch. The porch could be heated in the winter and doubled as a changing room that allowed guests to enter the house nude year round. It featured a small closet with hangers, a shelving unit with six rattan baskets and a table stacked with bath towels. These were intended for use by guests that needed a place to store their clothing or didn’t bring a towel to sit on. We all undressed in the porch then Susan ceremoniously rang the door bell. Benson, already nude, greeted each of us with hugs and kisses as we passed through the front door to start living as full time nudists in our new home.
