Summary of book 1: G15 Classified
The Earth has been destroyed in an unavoidable cataclysm. Shortly before the end, a mysterious race of aliens - known only as the "Others" - gave humanity a chance to survive. They provided 20 colony ships, each capable of carrying generations of people to another suitable planet, outside of the danger zone.
Each ship is controlled by a system known as the Machine. The Machine controls all aspects of the ship, and can reconfigure the interior of the ship as needed. It can also synthesize everything from food to clothes and equipment, and even replacement organs for medical purposes.
Each ship started out with 120 people - 30 carefully selected couples and their 60 young children. En route, it was determined that the optimum size for a generation is 30 children - 15 of each sex. When the youngest of the children turned 14, the original adults went into cryonic suspension, to be revived when they reached the colony planet.
They also carried cell banks of more humans and most Earth flora and fauna, and a database of virtually all electronic information on the planet up to the time of liftoff.
John, known formally as C30, was the youngest, and possibly the brightest, member of the first generation born entirely onboard the ship. He had a strong understanding of the ways of the Machine, and many of the adults and his peers came to him when they needed help with it.
On his 14th birthday, all of the adults went into suspension. The next morning, the kids were called into an assembly and told about their new lives. They would be trained for their roles as ships crew, colonists, and parents. Then they were called, one at a time, into special rooms and examined for medical issues. Then they were given their new designations (B1-15, and G1-15) and their new uniform.
Partway through the classification process, something seemed to have gone wrong. One of the girls, Marie, was given a B number and a boy's uniform. She protested, but the Machine insisted.
John had a good idea what was coming. The balance of 15 and 15 was essential, and most boys had already been classified. So he was not completely surprised when he was classified as G15, and given a girl's uniform.
Later that day, he and his cousin Janey got prerecorded messages from his mother and aunt, indicating that they had anticipated that possibility. They asked Janey to help John get through the situation.
Reactions by the rest of their generation was mixed. Most adapted fairly quickly. Two boys, Chad and his cousin Alex, were very abusive and their friend Tony was only a little less so. On the girls' side, Rachel disapproved of the impropriety of it all, and "the court" - three girls who considered themselves the leaders of the girls - alternated between asking John for favors and attacking him for stepping out of line.
