INTRODUCTION
My wife, Julie, and I decided that our stories chronicling our two families’ nudist lifestyle would start with who and how the first person in each of our families discovered nudism. This story documents how Mabel, Julie’s mom, began her family’s journey into the full time the nudist lifestyle. Her family included parents, Bill and Mabel, an older sister, Rebecca, and Julie. They were what was called an absolute nudist family because at their home nudity was compulsory. To a certain extent, their introduction to nude living was brought about by necessity.
LIFE ON THE FARM
Mabel grew up on a small farm a few miles North of Bakersfield, California, during the depression years of the 1930s. Her father, failing as a farmer, worked as a low paid unskilled laborer in the Kern River oil fields a few miles to the East. Mabel, her mother and brother ( 3 years older ), when not at school, worked on a portion of the farm raising produce to sell at their stand by the roadside. Their seasonal crops included lettuce, various squashes, peppers, tomatoes and melons. On a good weekend they could expect to make about $10, not quite enough to cover their basic living expenses for the month.
Mabel’s father was a drinker and often gambled away most of his meager paycheck money so the family could never get ahead financially. In fact the family was quite poor and Mabel and her brother had to save their good clothing for school and working the stand. Consequently, as pre-teens, she and her brother became used to wearing only underwear while at home or working the produce gardens.
When Mabel was 13 her brother started working with his father in the oil fields. That left Mabel and her mother to work the produce garden. To save their clothes for the weekend’s work in the produce stand they often wore only their underwear to work in the garden. Their underwear consisted of plain tap pants ( like boxers ), a tank top t-shirt and no bra.
IN THE NAVY
That pattern remained unchanged until December of 1942 when Mabel, at 19, enlisted in the US Navy for the duration of World War II. She regretted leaving her mother to struggle financially, as her brother was now also drinking and gambling. Her Navy enlistment opened up a whole new world of opportunities for Mabel. She first traveled by cross country train to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for 8 weeks of Navy WAVE basic training. That was followed by a 12 week Yeoman Specialty School in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where she learned bookeeping, typing and how to drive a jeep.
Her first 6 months of active service was in Lakehurst, New Jersey, where she quickly increased her rank to Seaman Second Class. She was then transferred to Pensacola, Florida, for the remainder of her enlistment. She saved almost half of her $54 monthly pay by buying a $25 US War Bond each payday. After her duties, Mabel enjoyed herself making friends, went to the movies, played games, and went on many dates. She lost her virginity to a Marine on a Florida beach while skinny dipping on a late night date.
Mabel’s enlistment ended in December of 1945. On her return home she found that things had changed for the better during her absence. Her brother had joined the US Merchant Marine and was away in the Far East working on cargo ships. Her father was still working in the oil fields but had stopped drinking and was home more often and helping in the garden and produce stand.
OFF TO COLLEGE AND MARRIAGE
In July of 1946 Mabel received a veteran’s grant to attended a 2 year teaching degree program at UCLA. With the addition of her savings she was able to move to a shared furnished appartment in Brentwood, near UCLA.
There she met Bill, a graduate student studying English Composition. Originally from Oklahoma, in 1942 he left college to enlist in the Navy but was injured and revieved a medical discharge in 1944. He returned to school, graduated with a teaching degree and was now earning a master’s dergree to teach college level English. They dated a few times during her second semester and became an exclusive couple that Summer. They both graduated in June of 1948 and were married a few days later.
They purchased a small home in Colton, California, near where Bill had secured his first position as an English teacher at Redlands University. Mabel acquired a job at a local elementary school and was able to attended night classes to earn a high school and community college teaching credential.
Even with both working as teachers their budget was very tight. In late 1951 their first daughter, Rebecca, was born. Mabel had to take the rest of the school year off from teaching to care for the baby, putting further strain on their budget. As a cost savings measure, Mabel introduced Bill to the concept of living with minimal clothing at home as she had learned in her youth. By Spring that evolved into living nude at home, which they both enjoyed very much. Mabel was always nude at home and Bill undressed as soon as he returned from work. They had become home nudists.
