INTRODUCTION
My wife, Julie, and I decided that our stories chronicling our two families’ nudist lifestyle must start with who and how the first person in each of our families discovered nudism. This story documents how Marion, Roger’s mom, began her family’s journey into the wholesome nudist lifestyle.
HOME LIFE
Marion, grew up as a single child on a family farm near Phillipsburg, Ohio. She was a popular strong willed, hard working over achiever and did well in school. During her senior year in high school Marion was elected as class treasurer, was active in the Drama club and was president of the Speech and Debate club. She earned several awards and distinctions for her scholastic and service club achievements. The most important, and eventually life changing, award was a scholarship to attend the Columbia Business College in Chicago.
Despite her many successes she hated her home life. A big factor was her parents’ disdain for the social and scholastic activities that she so loved. Being strict religious fundamentalists they strongly objected to all of her extracurricular activities and increasing independence. Their wish was for Marion to graduate from high school, marry a suitor selected by her father and assume her station as an obedient housewife.
After considerable debate and angst, eventually overcoming her parents’ objections, Marion was allowed to accept the business school scholarship for one year and to return home for the Christmas and Easter breaks. Her parents agreed to send her money to cover those travel costs. That summer she took on several part time jobs in order to save enough money for her anticipated school expenses.
OFF TO COLLEGE
In mid August Marion traveled to Chicago to arrange for her school and living accommodations. On her arrival she was caught up in the massive celebrations in the streets of Chicago for VJ Day, the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII. At school she was assigned a bed and desk in the women’s dorm where four students shared a bedroom but had to use a communal bathroom and shower serving the entire floor. The communal showers were somewhat of a shock for her because it was her first exposure at being with or even seeing other naked women.
She soon settled into her school routine, attending classes and engaging in the weekend social functions held at the school and nearby social clubs. After a couple of months she got a part time job at an office supplies shop, occupying her spare time, expanding her social circle and giving her needed spending money. She started wearing contemporary style clothes and shoes, wearing makup and shaved her legs and underarms.
That June when Marion returned home for the Summer break her parents berated her because she had not insisted on private bathing facilities. They loudly declared that she was possessed by evil and condemned unless she changed her ways and returned to the church. All because she had participated in communal bathing with some other women?! Being extreme fundamentalists, that issue was only the tip of the iceberg. The real reason for their displeasure was her confidence, independence and “free spirit attitude”, personality traits were driving a deep wedge between them.
Marion was miserable during her Summer stay and couldn’t wait for the start of the next term so in mid-July she returned to Chicago, weeks ahead of schedule. She increased her hours at work, planning to save enough money to not have to return home during subsequent school breaks. In fact she never reconciled with her parents and my sister and I never met our maternal grandparents.
INVITED TO VISIT THE FARM
A co-worker at the stationary shop was a slightly older woman named Clarissa. They had become friendly soon after Marion started working there. Eventually Marion confided her family rift story with her. One day in early August Clarissa invited Marion to join her and her friends, married couple John and Barbara, for a relaxing Saturday visit to a ‘friends farm’ at Mud Lake, Wisconsin, about 50 miles away. Clarissa thought the experience would help Marion to stop thinking of her family problems.
