I woke up early in the morning with a piss hard-on. Kelly's clock showed it was 7:03 am. I slipped on my robe and went across the hall to use the bathroom. Fortunately no girls answered when I knocked on the door. I took care of my business and headed back to Kelly's room.

I decided to check-in at the hospital before I went back to sleep. I grabbed my cell phone and went back out into the hallway. The front desk at the hospital wouldn't give me any information. The nurse did agree to take a message down to the football players in the waiting room. I waited in the hallway for five minutes for someone to return my call.

Karol Zizka called me to report that there was no change in status for Jay. Karol came down to the hospital to relieve Zack after he called around at three am. Karol accepted my offer to relieve him later in the morning. I was to come in around ten am. I slipped back into bed with Kelly without disturbing her after I finished the call.

I woke Kelly around nine am. I knew she'd want to come along to the hospital to keep the vigil. I went back to my dorm to shower and change. Kelly and I met at the Mix where we picked up a newspaper, breakfast sandwiches and juice.

Karol Zizka, Max Rosen, Brendan Hayden and Shawn Byrd were in the waiting room when we arrived. Steph was asleep on the couch. We sat down and listened as Karol explained all the news available.

Jay's accident did occur as he turned off University Drive onto Eastern Boulevard last night. A drunk driver smashed into the left side of Jay's car as the drunk tried to turn onto Eastern Boulevard at the same time as Jay. The police said this was the guy's third drunk driving arrest in three years.

The surgeons found that Jay had a ruptured spleen when they operated last night. They controlled the bleeding and stitched Jay back together. The doctors were concerned about possible brain swelling from his head trauma. Fortunately that didn't happen. Jay's broken arm and three fractured ribs were relatively minor injuries. His left leg was another story entirely. Both his left tibia and femur were fractured in multiple places.

Jay woke after his early morning operation briefly. The doctors gave him a heavy dose of sedatives so he could sleep through the pain during the day. Jay was expected to be awake sometime later in the afternoon.

Karol, Max and Brendan took off for their rooms to get some sleep. Karol said more players were expected to keep Shawn, Kelly, Steph and me company. Kelly and I had seats. We shared our newspaper with Shawn and waited for more information.

Stephanie woke up about an hour later. I offered to give her a ride back to her apartment, but she decided to stay here and wait. Small groups of football players stopped by throughout the morning, seeking information. We passed on the information we had. Jake Washington called just before noon to let us know he and J. T. Hill would be over to relieve us around two o'clock.

The four of us grabbed some lunch at the hospital cafeteria around 12:30. We settled down again in the waiting room after we ate. About fifteen minutes later a well dressed woman at the reception desk caught our attention when we overheard her ask about Jason Nicholson. The nurse directed the lady to have a seat in the waiting area while she brought the doctor out to talk with her.

The trim blonde haired lady was probably 5'-10" and in her late forties. Shawn popped out of his seat and walked towards her as she came to the waiting area. Kelly and I followed Shawn. A weak smile creased her face as she recognized Shawn.

"Shawn! How is he?" Mrs. Nicholson asked. Before Shawn could answer she added, "I left at six am and drove straight through. How is my son?"

"It was a pretty severe accident, but he'll be OK, Mrs. Nicholson," Shawn answered. Mrs. Nicholson gave Shawn a hug. Kelly, Stephanie and I stood by Shawn while they hugged.

"Thank God!" Mrs. Nicholson said. She looked over at the other three of us standing by Shawn. "Are you going to introduce us to your friends, Shawn?"

"Um ... yeah, sorry Mrs. Nicholson," Shawn replied. "This is Kyle Martin."

I shook hands with Jay's mother. "Kyle," she said, smiling. "It's good to meet you. Jason has said so much about you. He values your friendship highly." She pumped my hand up and down a few times and then looked over at Kelly and Stephanie. "One of you must be Kyle's girlfriend, Kelly."

"That's me," my girlfriend answered. She offered her hand to Mrs. Nicholson, who shook it.

"Jason is correct. You and Kyle make a very handsome couple," Mrs. Nicholson said. "I'm guessing you would be my son's girlfriend, Stephanie."

"Yes, I'm Stephanie ... Stephanie Kolmar," Steph said, shaking hands with Mrs. Nicholson. "I'm not exactly ... Um ... Jay's girlfriend. We've dated quite a bit this fall but we aren't a couple yet." She gave an embarrassed grin. "I guess Jay and I never got around to talking about becoming a couple."

"My son adores you, Stephanie," Mrs. Nicholson said. "I talked with him yesterday afternoon before he took you to dinner." She looked at Kelly and me and added, "He told me how much he enjoyed your double date on Friday night. I'm glad my son has made such good friends here." Mrs. Nicholson stepped towards the chairs. "Maybe we should all have a seat. Who knows how long with will be until a doctor gets here to talk with me. What do you know about my son's accident?"

Shawn, Kelly, Steph and I sat down beside Mrs. Nicholson and filled her in on all the information we had about the accident and Jay's condition. Well ... everything except the reason Jay made a trip back to the dorms before going back to Steph's apartment. Some things are best left unsaid.

We talked for about ten minutes, until the doctor arrived to brief Mrs. Nicholson. He spent five minutes discussing Jay's prognosis with Mrs. Nicholson. Jay was still asleep, according to the doctor, though Jay was expected to wake up any time. The five of us sat and made small talk while we waited.

Half an hour later a nurse came out and got Mrs. Nicholson. Jay was awake.

While Jay's mom was in his room Cuch, Tyler Madden, Trevor, and Dave McCall arrived, the next shift of football players to keep the vigil. I filled the other guys in on everything we knew about Jay's accident and condition.

Mrs. Nicholson came out about five minutes later. Jay was asking if any of his friends were at the hospital. The nurse said we could visit him two at a time for a few minutes. We conferred briefly and decided Shawn, his roommate, and Stephanie would visit first. Shawn and Steph spent about five minutes with Jay before it was my turn.

Kelly and I held hands as we walked into Jay's room. He was in the nearest bed to the door. Our friend was in bad shape. His left leg was in traction. His left arm was in a cast and lay at his side. Jay had numerous cuts and scrapes on his face along with a large gauze bandage covering a spot on the left side of his forehead. His face was puffy. His left eye was swelled halfway shut. Jay looked like he had just done fifteen rounds with Muhammad Ali.

Jay lifted his head a little to look at us. I tried to conceal my shock at my friend's appearance, unsuccessfully. Jay gave us a weak smile and said, "I guess I look like hell, don't I?"

I stammered for a second and then said, "You're alive. That's what's important."

"Yes," Kelly agreed. "We weren't too sure about that last night."

"How are you feeling?" I asked.

"I guess better than I look, judging by everyone's reaction to me," Jay said. "They have me doped up on painkillers. I'm not feeling much of anything right now."

"I'm glad you aren't in pain," Kelly said. There was an awkward pause. Neither of us were quite sure what to say.

"My mom told me my dad is flying in," Jay said.

"Why would that be a surprise?" I asked. "I'm sure my dad would come up to State College if I got hurt."

"Your dad's carrier isn't in the Indian Ocean like my dad's," Jay replied. "The admiral said he and the XO can look after things."

I knew Jay's dad was in the navy. Still I was surprised when Jay talked about an admiral and the XO, or executive officer, looking after things while his father was gone.

"What exactly does your dad do in the navy?" I asked.

"He's the commanding officer of the George H. W. Bush, CVN-77," Jay answered.

'Your dad commands a carrier?" I asked. "I had no idea. Isn't the Bush our newest one?"

Jay gave a slight smile and replied, "Yeah, it is."

The nurse stuck her head in the room, interrupting. "You need to wrap things up. I don't want Jason overexerting himself." We acknowledged the nurse before turning back to Jay.

"Is there anything you need?" I asked.

"I gave Shawn a list of things to get for me," Jay said. "He could use a ride over here. He doesn't have a car on campus."

"You got it, Jay," I replied.

"One more thing, Kyle," Jay added. "No one around here knows what became of my car. Can you find out?"

"You got it," I answered. Kelly and I told Jay to take it easy as we left.

Cuch and Tyler went in to see Jay after us. The rest of us talked for a few minutes. Shawn and I compared schedules with Kelly and Stephanie. Shawn, Kelly and I would meet for lunch tomorrow. Steph would meet us at Jay and Shawn's room after lunch. Everyone would ride over with me to visit Jay. We let Mrs. Nicholson know what our plans were and left her our cell phone numbers.

I promised Mrs. Nicholson as we left, "Anything, anything at all, call us. We will be glad to help you."

I gave Steph a ride back to her apartment and took Shawn and Kelly back to campus with me. It was after three o'clock when we got back to campus. Kelly and I both had homework to do, so we headed back to our own rooms.

Coach Burton talked with the whole team after dinner at the Training Table. He briefed us about everything he knew about Jay's accident, condition and prognosis. The team grapevine had gotten most team members up to speed already, but it was still good to hear this from an authoritative source.

Coach reported the doctors were extremely pleased with the results of Jay's neurological exams. They ruled out serious brain damage from when Jay's head bounced off the steering wheel during the accident. I was surprised to learn the extent of the work necessary to fix Jay's left leg. The doctors wanted Jay to get stabilized before they used rods, plates and screws to rebuild the shattered bones. Jay would travel to some other hospital for this surgery. Mount Nittany wasn't equipped for that kind of work.

Coach also reported Yasin Clark was back at his apartment recuperating from the ACL/MCL repair surgery last Thursday. He would be resting at his apartment this week and then begin rehab with the team trainers on Friday.

I talked with Coach Burton after dinner and asked for his help in tracking down Jay's car. Coach promised to have one of the assistants check with the police tomorrow morning. I was to check with Ann Marie at the Lasch Building front desk before I went to the hospital.

--oooOooo--

On Monday Kelly, Shawn Byrd and I met at the dining hall after Kelly's philosophy class for lunch. Stephanie met us at the elevators on the fourth floor of Hartranft when we came back from lunch. We walked up the hill to the East Parking Deck for my car. A few minutes later I pulled into the parking lot at Mount Nittany.

Mrs. Nicholson and a tall distinguished looking gentleman in navy khakis were talking with Jay when we arrived. We waited at the door for a half a minute until they noticed us. I noted the all the stripes on the officer's shoulder boards. There was no doubt Jay's father was a senior naval officer.

Mrs. Nicholson introduced Captain William J. Nicholson to us. Capt. Nicholson stood ram rod straight to greet us. He was 6'-2" tall with short brown hair with a touch of gray on the sides.

"We'll give you young people some privacy," Capt. Nicholson suggested. "We'll go down to the cafeteria for some java."

When the Nicholsons were gone Shawn asked, "How are you feeling today?"

The swelling in his face had gone down, replaced by various shades of black and blue. Jay's left eye was open today. "Not too bad," Jay explained. "I feel the pain more than yesterday but my head is clear now."

"That's good," I said. "What happens now? How long are you going to be stuck in this hospital?"

"This hospital?" Jay answered. Jay held his casted left arm up. "Not long. My arm is set and needs time to recover. My ribs will heal on their own. My leg..." Jay shook his head and pointed down to his left leg. " ... that's another story. The doctor showed me the x-ray of it. It looks like a jig saw puzzle. The doctor tells me they can fix my leg."

"I'm sorry your leg is in such bad shape, Jay," Stephanie said.

"When's the operation?" I asked.

"Mom and dad decided they wanted the best orthopedic surgeon working on my leg," Jay explained. "They're flying me down to Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday to see Dr. James Andrews. I guess he'll operate on Thursday or Friday, after he examines me."

"Dr. Andrews, I've heard of him," Shawn said. "He supposed to be the best. He's taken care of a lot of big NFL players."

"I've heard of him too," I agreed. "He fixed up Donovan McNabb when he blew out his knee a few years ago."

"How long will you be laid up, Jay?" Kelly asked.

"The doctor here thinks it'll be a month to six weeks," Jay replied.

"What are you going to do about classes?" Stephanie asked.

"I'm going to have to withdraw from my classes this semester," Jay explained. "There is no way I can catch up after missing classes for that long."

"Oh man, that sucks," Shawn said.

"Yeah it does," Jay agreed. "Did any of you find anything out about my car? Where is it at?"

"Ryan Reynolds checked into it for you," I replied. "The police had a tow truck take it to the police lot."

"Can somebody pick it up for me?" Jay asked. "Mom and dad are flying to Atlanta with me on Wednesday."

"Um ... I don't think that'll be necessary," I said. "The policeman Ryan talked to said he expected your insurance company will probably declare the car totaled."

"Totaled?" Jay said. Jay's face filled with emotion. He blinked a couple times and said, "Totaled! I love that car."

"It's just a car, man..." Shawn said. " ... a hunk of metal."

"What's important is that you are around here, not the car," Stephanie added.

"It's more than a hunk of metal to me," Jay said. "I haven't spent as much time with my dad when I was growing up as I would have liked, what with his sea duty and career. My dad's posting to Norfolk as the base commander's COS [chief of staff] five years ago was great. Two years as COS and two more years forming and training the Bush crew – that was the longest time I lived in one place in my life." Jay batted his eyes again to try to clear the tears. "The four years dad and I spent working on the car were so special to me. That's why it isn't just a hunk of metal to me."

"The car may be gone," I said. "Nothing will ever take away the time you spent with your dad. You'll always have that."

"I guess," Jay answered.

Shawn delivered a couple of Jay's books and his MP3 player. We talked for a few minutes about classes.

Kelly asked, "How did your dad get here so quick? Didn't you say he was on a carrier in the Indian Ocean?"

"Admiral Nash, the task group commander, said dad should get home to see me after he heard about the accident. Dad caught an E-2C to Diego and then a MAC flight to Dover. He caught another flight to Patuxent where he got a T-38 to fly here."

"You're dad's a pilot?" Stephanie asked.

"Don't say that around my dad," Jay said, giving us a slight smile. "Dad is a naval aviator."

"I guess your dad's is pretty protective..." Kelly said. " ... to fly half way around the world to see you."

"Yeah, my parents are," Jay agreed. "I guess it's understandable, what with my sister and all."

"Sister?" I asked. "I don't remember you ever talking about having a sister."

"We don't talk about Jennifer much," Jay explained. "Jennifer is ... no, Jennifer would have been my older sister. She was born five years before me. She died from SIDS when she was three months old. There were complications when I was born. Mom couldn't have more children after me. I guess that's why mom and dad are pretty protective."

Jay asked for some time alone with Steph, so Kelly, Shawn and I went out in the hall and hung out while Jay talked with his girlfriend. Capt. and Mrs. Nicholson met us outside Jay's room while Steph talked with her boyfriend. Jay's parents thanked us for being good friends with Jason.

Kelly, Shawn and I popped in to say good bye when Steph was done talking with Jay. We had to head back to campus so Kelly could get to her golf class.

--oooOooo--

Jay's accident discombobulated our practices. Monday afternoon the coaches had to switch up the quarterback assignments. Glenn Korbel took about fifteen snaps with the first string and took most of the snaps with the second string. I was surprised that Chip Brinton took snaps with the second string when Glenn wasn't with them. Chip and Colin split time quarterbacking the scout or third string team.

Ryan Reynolds delivered messages to Zack, Chip and me after practice letting us know we had a meeting with Coach Burton at 2:30 pm the next day. None of us knew what the topic of the meeting was. Ryan couldn't explain either.

I hurried through my dinner and rushed off to my scuba class. Mr. Coleman had taught us nearly everything we would need to get certified after an open water dive. We were able to spend most of the class playing around under water. It was a joy. I had a receivers meeting with Coach Adams after that so we could review the expected defensive coverages by Ohio State for Saturday's game.

I caught up with my e-mails later on Monday night. My brother Andy sent me two e-mails over the course of the weekend. The first was from Friday night to report that our high school football team had beaten LS, a strong team in our league 31-27. Matt Sauder had to lead the team on an end-of-game drive to pull out the win. Of course the touchdown came when he threw the ball to his favorite receiver, Andy, in the corner of the end zone.

Andy sent the second e-mail Sunday afternoon. So far Penn State was still the favorite destination over Maryland and Rutgers. Andy had a visit to Temple next Saturday and a visit to Delaware on October 30th. I thought the chances of Andy coming to Penn State were excellent. We had better facilities and a better program than Temple. Little Delaware shouldn't even be in the competition for an athlete like Andy.

I had time to focus on the polls that evening. LSU and USC kept their #1 and #2 rankings. We stayed at #3. Missouri jumped up to #4, then Notre Dame #5 and Ohio State #6. Odds were good that either LSU or USC would lose a game before the end of the season and let our team into the BCS Championship game. Things were looking good for our team reaching our goal.

--oooOooo--

Shawn Byrd had class after lunch on Tuesday so Kelly, Steph and I visited Jay on our own. Mrs. Nicholson gave us a few minutes of privacy when we arrived. Jay's dad had left already to return the jet he borrowed from Patuxent. He volunteered to ferry an aircraft to Pensacola for the Navy so he could get south quickly. He was renting a car there and driving up to meet Jay and Mrs. Nicholson in Birmingham tomorrow afternoon when they arrived.

Our conversation with Jay was awkward. Normally we talked about our weekend plans, the next game, or classes. Jay knew all about our game plan for Ohio State, so there was nothing to discuss there. I briefly told him about how practice went in his absence. Classes weren't a good topic since Jay was dropping all of his. Jay was leaving so we didn't discuss our weekend plans.

Jay gave me a list of things he wanted Shawn to bring over tonight or tomorrow morning before he left. Jay sent a second list of things of things he wanted shipped to his home in Norfolk for his convalescence after his surgery. I promised to make sure Shawn had the lists before he came over to visit after dinner.

The silence was uncomfortable as we sought a suitable topic to keep the conversation going. Finally Kelly blurted, "You take good care of yourself, Jay." She walked around the bed, held Jay's right hand and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "I'm going to miss you."

"Yeah," I agreed as I moved around the bed to join Kelly. "It isn't going to be the same without you to hang with." Jay and I did a hand clasp, shake and knuckle bump.

"You work hard for your physical therapist," I added. "He's going to be a frickin' sadist, but that's a good thing. He'll get you back on the field in the spring."

"Yeah, when I get back..." Jay said, without conviction.

"Hey! I'm counting on you to lead our team next season," I insisted.

"With my leg busted up the way it is? Yeah ... right!" Jay answered sharply. "My dream was to be a starting quarterback on a big college team." Jay stared down the bed at his left leg. His voice dropping, Jay added, "So much for that dream."

"That's it? I hurt my leg, so I'm finished," I said, my voice rising. "Three years ago I was in that hospital bed with my knee all mangled up. I had expected lots of scholarship offers from all the big colleges. I didn't get squat after my knee injury. I point blank asked Coach Burton at football camp in the summer if they were going to offer me a scholarship. The answer was no. I busted my ass at rehab. I got back."

"In the shape I'm in?" Jay retorted. "I don't know."

"You're a pocket passing quarterback," I replied. "You don't need to be the fastest guy on the field. You need a good arm, the right one." I pointed to his good arm. " ... and a good mind."

"I guess I'm too hard headed to lose that," Jay answered. His lips curled up in a small smile.

"What is your home e-mail address?" I asked. "I want to stay in touch with you while you're rehabbing."

"You can use my university e-mail account," Jay answered. "The university is keeping it active for me while I'm away."

"Good luck with the operation, man," I added. "I'll see you next semester." I stepped away to make room for Stephanie. She stepped up to Jay's bed on the right side. Jay did his best to hug her as she leaned down to give him a farewell kiss.

"You do what you promised for me," Jay said when they broke the kiss. "I don't want to hear that you spent three months shut in on date nights. Get out and have some fun. Just remember I will be back in January. I hope we can pick up where we left off this fall."

"I don't really want to date others, Jay," Steph answered. "But I'll go out occasionally if it makes you happy."

"I just want you to be happy, honey," Jay answered. Jay and Stephanie exchanged another kiss and hug before they disengaged. We wished our friend good luck with his operation and promised to write often before we left.

I dropped Kelly off at Rec Hall and Steph off behind Pattee Library. I parked my car in the parking deck and hustled over to the Lasch Building for my meeting with Coach Burton.

--oooOooo--

I met Chip in the locker room when I dropped things off at my locker. The two of us headed over to the coach's office together. Ann Marie showed us in immediately. Zack Hayes was already seated with Coach Burton on the Coach's couch. Chip and I had seats where Coach indicated.

"Thank you for coming gentlemen," Coach Burton said. He turned and looked at Chip. "This meeting concerns your future, Chip. I've rethought your role with the team." Chip's eyes went wide in surprise.

"Relax, Chip," Coach continued. "You're still a quarterback in my plans." He chuckled as Chip relaxed again. "I want to accelerate your development, Chip. We're going to scrap your red-shirt year and give you some playing time this season."

"OK, Coach," Chip said in acknowledgement. "What does this mean in the future? I'd use a year of eligibility this way."

"That is correct, Chip," Coach Burton acknowledged. "Contrary to what you and I have discussed in the past, I will give you a shot at earning the starter's job next season." Coach Burton paused for a second to gauge Chip's reaction to the news. Chip's big smile spoke volumes about his feelings about the change. "Understand that I will not promise you that you will be the starter next season. You will have the opportunity to compete with Jay and Glenn for the starter's spot."

"I would like that chance, Coach," Chip said, his grin rivaling that of the Cheshire Cat.

Turning to Zack and me, Coach continued, "I understand the two of you have been working with Chip to help him learn the playbook." We nodded yes. "I want you to continue doing that with Ryan Reynolds' help. Ryan will direct you on what formations and plays to study each week."

"No problem, Coach," Zack answered.

"You got it, Coach," I added.

"I don't want you shortchanging your game preparations, Zack," Coach Burton explained. "This year's games take priority over QB development." Zack nodded in agreement. "I hope you will continue to work with Chip after the season is over."

"I'll do my best, Coach," Zack answered. "I won't have as much time on campus in the spring as now. I have to get my student teaching in before graduation."

"That's no problem, Zack," coach Burton responded. "I will appreciate any help you can give Chip after the season is finished." Coach turned and looked at me. With a chuckle he asked, "Do you have any questions, Kyle?"

I returned the grin and asked, "Why?" All four of us laughed, given my reputation among the team and coaches for asking exactly that question – time and time again.

"You tell me, Kyle," Coach Burton said.

"Obviously, part of this is due to Jay's injury," I explained. "I assume the information you've gotten from the doctors throws doubt into Jay's ability to play in the future. I stopped by to see him before this meeting and he was pretty down."

"That's correct, Kyle," coach Burton agreed. "The team doctor says there is no chance he will be ready for spring practice and a 50/50 chance at being ready for next fall."

"Don't you think that Glenn or Colin can run the offense if Jay isn't ready?" I asked.

Coach Burton pondered my questions for about ten seconds and then replied, "Why don't you and I continue this conversation in private, Kyle? Zack and Chip, do you have any questions?"

"No Coach, I understand what you want," Zack said.

"Thanks for giving me this opportunity, Coach," Chip added. Zack and Chip headed out of the office while I sat on Coach's couch. Coach Burton stared at me for a few seconds.

"I didn't want to get into player evaluations with Chip and Zack present," Coach said. "You've played or practiced with all of our quarterbacks. How would you evaluate each of them?"

"Well Zack..." I began.

"Skip Zack, he doesn't figure into next year's QB situation," Coach Burton explained.

"OK, Chip is bigger than Glenn and Colin," I said. "Chip is more mobile than either of them too."

"Uh huh..." Coach said nodding as I talked.

"Glenn doesn't have the strongest arm," I said. "We'd be at a disadvantage when we want to run our deepest routes."

"How do you expect our offensive line to do at protection next season?" Coach asked.

"We're going to lose three good guys to graduation after this season," I said. "That is going to be a good question. Can we protect our quarterback long enough to try deep passes next season?"

Coach Burton nodded his head in agreement.

"I guess having a mobile quarterback would be a benefit," I explained. "Glenn and Colin have been here two years and know the offense inside out. Would Chip's arm strength, size and mobility make up for his inexperience next season?"

"That is the question, isn't it?" Coach replied.

"I guess I can understand what you're doing," I said. "I've always assumed you planned to have Jay as the next starter followed by Chip when Jay graduates. Are you selling our team's future short by using Chip next season?"

"There is one piece to the puzzle you don't have, Kyle," Coach replied. "I received a phone call from Jon Stafford last evening. He is announcing that he will play here tomorrow afternoon."

"Ahhh ... the future is assured," I said. "I was extremely impressed with Jon when he visited."

"Jon will be an excellent addition to the team next season," Coach Burton agreed.

"Can I ask one more question, Coach?" I asked. Coach Burton nodded yes.

"You said Chip will compete with Jay and Glenn for the starter's job next season. Why didn't you include Colin in your list of competitors?"

"You noted that Colin doesn't have the size, speed, or arm strength to match up against our other quarterbacks," Coach explained. "Colin could be a starter at a Division II or III school if he wanted to go that route. He asked Coach Paterno to let him be a walk-on when Coach said Penn State wasn't interested in him. Colin agreed to help develop our younger guys and run our scout team. That is how much he wants to be a part of the Nittany Lions team."
