Flamingo tilted her head, one leg tucked neatly beneath her, and gestured toward the painting with a wingtip. “It’s the emptiness that speaks, don’t you think? The cactus isn’t lonely. It’s proud.”
The polar bear squinted at the sun in the corner. “Proud, maybe. But also parched. That sun looks like it hasn’t blinked in a thousand years.”
They stood in silence for a moment, absorbing the dunes and the stillness.
“I wonder,” Flamingo said, “if the artist has ever tasted sand.”
Bear chuckled. “I hope not. Sand is terrible. It gets in your teeth. Like coconut.”
“Coconut is delightful,” the flamingo replied, scandalized. “Especially in pie.”
“Pie?” Bear turned to Flamingo, ears perked. “You’re a pie creature?”
“Of course. Pie is layered with meaning. Crust, filling, warmth. It’s a hug with structure.”
Bear crossed his arms. “Cake is celebration. It’s architecture and joy. You don’t bring pie to a birthday.”
“You do if you love someone properly,” Flamingo sniffed.
They stared at the desert painting again, the cactus now seeming to lean slightly, as if listening.
“I suppose,” Bear said slowly, “if the desert were a dessert, it might be pie. Something baked. Something with peach.”
“Or prickly pear,” Flamingo added.
They nodded together, the velvet rope between them swaying seductively.
“Let’s agree,” Bear said, “that the desert is pie, but the gallery is cake.”
“And we,” the flamingo smiled, “are the frosting.”
“Quite so,” acknowledged Bear, “and now I think it’s time for me to lick you.”
