Years passed and no word from May. It was going on the fifth anniversary of April's birth. Jill had a son, Myron, from Andy, She seemed to be comfortable in Fairbanks. "We just have to contain them as long as we can," Andy shook his head frustration. Myron, being one hundred percent human, was much less of a problem than the girls. "I have to get online to write my essay for my English class," he got up to start work on his paper. He still wanted to be a dentist and the money May put into his bank account would be a big help to make that goal.

May was laying in the shade close to her litter of three cubs. She was panting because of the intense heat of midday Africa. Her cubs were close by playing trying to best one another. She was looking at the male who in turn was gazing upon the cubs. She knew he was up to no good.

The pride was hungry but they were waiting for sundown to go out on the hunt. A herd of zebra and wildebeests were out on the plains grazing not paying attention to the lions. Somehow the herds sensed that they were safe. At least for the time being. May watched the male creep forward toward her cubs. She showed her fangs with a faint growl. The male paid no attention to her. Its eyes were on one of the cubs that were tumbling around.

In a flash May rushed the male hitting him with full force in the face with her powerful paw. The blow sent it backwards several feet. It recovered and attacked the mother of the cubs. The rest of the pride got up and watched what happened. In seconds she swatted him with another powerful swipe with one of her claws hit his open eye. He turned and ran. May would have chased him but she was concerned about her litter and returned to them. She stared at the male who was pawing at his eye. She had blinded him in that one eye. She laid back down to let her cubs feed upon her milk. It was almost time for her to stop feeding them and for the trio to eat the scraps from their next hunt.

It was a school holiday. Andy and Jill were grocery shopping leaving the three kids alone. Jill felt comfortable that Barbara would take care of her half-brother. After changing him, they laid Myron down for his nap with a bottle of warm milk. As he sucked on the rubbery nipple, the girls walked into April's room.
