Most of the wedding party ended up at our house for breakfast on Sunday. Mom out did herself with the food. Abby and Will came too, before they headed to the airport for their honeymoon. Mom and Dad's wedding gift to them was five days in the Virgin Islands. They planned to spend time soaking up the sun on the beach, snorkeling and scuba. Of course all of that would come after they spent some quality time together in bed.

Before they left for the airport Will teased Mom, "Who knows, maybe we'll see about making a third grandchild for you 'Granny'."

Abby grinned and added, "Yes, Mrs. Martin. We want to have a large family."

Mom smiled at their joke. She responded, "Let me make a few things clear. You don't need to rush to have kids just for me. Two is more than enough grandchildren for now. Second, no one – and I mean no one – calls me Granny. I will answer to Mom-Mom, Gram or Grammy. I will NEVER be GRANNY! Lastly, Abby you are family now. Please call me, Sharon."

Abby answered, "That's a deal, Sharon. I'll keep taking the pill for awhile."

Mom hugged Abby and then Will as they headed out the door. Every one went outside to wave good bye to Will and Abby when they left. Andy and I had snuck out during breakfast to "decorate" Will's car with streamers, a 'Just Married' sign and two strings of cans tied to the back bumper. Will and Abby laughed at the sign and removed the streamers. They didn't see the cans. We waved as the cans rattled when they pulled away. Will drove to the end of the block before he stopped and removed the cans. He gave us a wave before he hopped back in the car. I assumed the sign stayed on the car until they got to the airport.

The twins woke me at 6 am on Monday morning. It was too early to get up and too close to time to get up for school to go back to sleep. I just lay on my bed thinking. I had 3 hours and 32 minutes left in my high school career.

I would be free! Free of the pain in the neck teachers. Free from the school principals. No more study halls. I would be eighteen in a few weeks. No more curfew. No more junior license. The world was filled with opportunities for me.

I grabbed a shower and shave a few minutes earlier than usual so I wouldn't have to wait for Andy or Liz to finish in the bathroom. I had a leisurely breakfast while I waited for Liz and Andy. Penny met us at my car and we headed off to school.

I teased Andy and Liz on the way to school. "You realize that the two of you are back to taking the bus from here on. No more rides in my Golf to and from school." I smiled evilly when the groaned in response.

I had three classes left. First period was Graphic Arts. Mr. Henderson went over our final projects and gave us half a period to talk. Frau Madel did a proper Deutsch Unterricht for second period. She talked with each of us individually before the period was over.

Frau Madel told me, "Viel Glück Herr Martin an der Penn State. Ich hoffe, daß sie viel Erfolg im Football haben werden." [Good Luck Mr. Martin. I hope you excel playing football at Penn State.] I wished Frau Madel good luck when I left (auf deutsch of course).

Third period was my favorite class of the year - History of World War II. We ended up debating the British-American strategy to end the war in Europe in 1944-5. Should we have followed Patton's plan for a southern thrust into Germany, Montgomery's idea of a northern thrust through the Ruhr and on to Berlin or Eisenhower's broad front strategy? We debated the question most of the period. Mr. Adams was my favorite teacher from my four years in high school. I was going to miss him.

I watched the clock tick off the minutes to 11:32 while we debated. The buzzer finally rang when the hands reached the appointed time for the end of third period. Mr. Adams announced, "Good luck to all you seniors. I'll see the rest of you tomorrow." That elicited the expected groan from the sophomores and juniors.

Mr. Adams asked as I was walking out, "Kyle, are you still planning to become a teacher?"

Mr. Adams and I had a few talks this year about my career plans. "Yes, I'm going to get a degree in education at Penn State. I plan to teach and coach football after I finish college."

"Good luck, son. I think you'll make a fine teacher."

I headed downstairs to empty my locker. I carried my things out to my car and deposited them in my trunk. Penny met me. She put her things in the back seat. The parking lot was full of seniors. All of us were ready to leave but didn't want to let go of our time together. One of the guys suggested we all go hang out at the park. Sixty or seventy kids all left together, horns blaring to announce our joy at departing and drove down to the Paradise Township Park.

We spent the afternoon together enjoying our friend's company one more time. In the past thirteen years we had become quite close. We wouldn't ever be together like this again after graduation tomorrow night. The crowd of friends finally started to thin late in the afternoon.

I managed to sleep late Tuesday morning. Noah and Connor were fairly quiet. I did hear Andy and Liz leave for school. It felt glorious to be free. Well, mostly free. I had to go back to school after lunch for graduation practice.

The principal went over in excruciating detail everything that would happen that evening. It took him an hour to go over all of it. My friends and classmates got restless by the end of the rehearsal. Norman Henderson, one of the stoners in our class, decided he needed a cigarette just as we were finishing. He popped it in his mouth, lit up and took a long drag before any of the faculty realized what was going on. The principal dismissed us quickly so he could have a serious talk with Norman. Norman didn't give a damn, so he kept on smoking.

It was a stupid thing to do. I wondered what became of him when my friends and I left. Would they let him graduate? Who knew?

Ed, Jeremy and I headed for the locker room. We had one last passing drill to run before we were finished. Coach Caffrey joined us part way through the drill. He stayed with us and watched as our guys went through their paces. They looked good to me.

When the kids went back inside to change at the end of practice, Coach Caffrey said, "I'm so proud of all of you. Jeremy, you set the tone on defense. You made everything work. I'm going to miss you." He shook Jeremy's hand.

"Thanks, Coach," Jeremy answered. "I appreciated everything you did for me in the last three years."

Coach continued, "Kyle – you were the catalyst on offense. Your speed and later your knowledge of football made our team an offensive powerhouse for the past four years. I don't know how we'll replace you."

I replied, "Thanks Coach. Andy will do fine next season filling my spot. We've already seen that. Thanks for all your time and effort teaching me football. I owe my scholarship to you."

Coach turned to Ed. "Ed – your leadership and drive made our offense the potent force it was. You played better over your three years than any quarterback I've ever coached. That includes the Hayes brothers. You ran the spread offense just like they book says. Hell, they could take clips of film of you and put it in the damn book. Thank you, son."

"I loved every minute of learning from you, Coach. I'm going down to Florida and make you proud."

"I know you will. All of you will make me proud this fall. I'm glad Notre Dame, Penn State and University of Florida play so many games on TV. I will be watching you, I guarantee it."

We all shook hands and departed. We were no longer Wolverines. I gathered up Andy and headed for home.

My classmates and I wondered why we needed to dress up in a dress shirt and tie for graduation. Everything was covered under our graduation robes. Some of us said we should show up in shorts and T-shirts. No one would be the wiser. Mom insisted I dress up. I did.

The graduation ceremony took longer than I expected. Evelyn Andrews talked on and on when she gave her speech. I was glad she made valedictorian and not me. I wouldn't have wanted to speak to this group. Finally it was time for the handing out the degrees. The guys, all dressed in red caps and gowns lined up on the left side of the auditorium. The girls, dressed in white, lined up on the right. The superintendent of our school district read off our 219 names one by one.

I day dreamed as he called graduates forward. I started paying attention when I heard names from my home room called. "Julie Ann Martin." Julie sat two seats in front of me in home room.

"Justin Hershey Martin." Yes, he was one of those Hersheys. His great grandfather was Milton Hershey's cousin. It shouldn't be surprising – after all, Milton Hershey had a chocolate store in Lancaster before he built the town of Hershey. Justin walked across the stage to receive his diploma.

"Kyle David Martin." I strode across the stage confidently and accepted my diploma from Dr. Hollinger. We shook hands and I walked to the opposite end of the stage and down. I headed to my seat as I heard "Matthew Dean Martin," called.

I was finished with the public education system. I wouldn't ever need to set foot in this school again, unless I wanted to. I had some excellent teachers when I was here. I had some bad ones too. For better or worse, I was moving on to bigger things. I hoped I was ready for them.

I sought out Penny when everything was over. I asked, "What do you want to do tomorrow?"

"I'd like to spend a quiet afternoon with you in your bedroom." My cock stirred at the idea. "What I'm going to do is go to work. Doctor Chu needs me to start tomorrow. The receptionist has the day off."

"How about tomorrow night? Can we get together then?"

"Of course," Penny replied.

The Fritzes, the Brookes, the Longs, the Norths, and the Trimbles joined my family and Penny's family. We talked about our plans for the graduation party on Saturday afternoon. Our seven families, along with the Hendricks, were throwing a monster sized bash at the township park to celebrate our high school graduation along with Will, Abby, Nikki and Adrian's graduation from college. Nikki and Adrian broke the news of their engagement the day after Will and Abby's wedding. Penny's parents were delighted to welcome Adrian into their family.

Our parents reviewed the assignments for every family for the party. My family was responsible for the coordinating with the barbeque caterer and bringing salads. We were going to roast three whole pigs along with 150 pounds of chicken.

The rest of my week was glorious. I managed to get extra sleep in the morning after Andy took Noah and Conner downstairs at breakfast time. I got up late in the morning, had some lunch and then worked on preparations for scout camp and for college.

When I got back next Friday night from the week at the beach with my friends, I would have one day to get ready for six weeks at scout camp. After six weeks at camp, I would come home on Thursday evening, July 30th to get ready for college. I was due to report to Penn State before lunch on Saturday August 1st. Team practice would start on the 3rd. It would be a huge help to get most of the packing and preparations done before I went to scout camp.

Penny and I enjoyed evenings together. We didn't do anything big, just spent the evenings together – watched TV together, went out for ice cream, that sort of comfortable evening activity.

Ed, Jeremy and I agreed we wouldn't attend the final passing drill on Thursday afternoon. We wanted Jake Kring, Kenny Weaver and Brett Fulmer to be responsible for running the drills. I couldn't resist stopping by the school to see how things went. I planned to slip into the parking lot and watch from a distance. Ed and Jeremy had the same idea. We watched practice together. Jake kept practice moving. Kenny and Brett handled the defense confidently. Andy and Tex helped the team leaders set the proper tone. Ed, Jeremy and I left before practice was finished and we were discovered. All of us were confident we had left "our" team in good hands.

My group of friends and I got incredibly lucky for senior week at the beach. Brandon McCafferty's uncle owned a beach house in Ocean City, New Jersey. He was willing to let us use it without charge for a week. We agreed that Hal, Brandon and I would drive the group down to the shore.

Thursday after dinner I asked Dad, "Can I get my allowance now?"

Dad answered, "Can you give me about fifteen minutes, Kyle? I have a couple things to get ready. See me in my study."

"Sure." I said. Get ready? Usually Dad just pulled a twenty out of his wallet and handed it to me.

Fifteen minutes later I knocked at the door to Dad's office. "Come in, Kyle," Dad answered. I stood expectantly in front of his desk. I waited about fifteen seconds before Dad said, "Have a seat, Kyle."

I sat down beside his desk. This certainly wasn't what I expected.

"You have graduated from high school and will turn eighteen in a few weeks. Effectively you are an adult now. It isn't appropriate for you to continue receiving an allowance." My face fell. Dad stared into my eyes. He smiled. "Relax. I'm not going to cut you off cold. I know how little they pay you for working at scout camp. We're going to work out new arrangements for you."

"What did you have in mind, Dad?"

"I'll make sure you have a reasonable amount of spending money. In the future it will be in the form of a loan. I don't expect you to repay it right away. I will keep a running tab of your loan while you are in college. You can repay me when you get a job after you graduate from college. How does this sound?"

"OK, I guess," I answered.

Dad reached into his drawer and handed me a plastic card. It was a Visa card with my name on it. "I have a credit card for you to use for emergencies in the future. It is in both our names. The bills will come here."

"And you'll put it on my tab?" I asked.

"Exactly. It's time for you to take more responsibility for yourself. That's what it means to become a man. Do you have any questions?"

"I think I understand what you expect. I do have a question. Can I get a hundred dollars for senior week? I don't have much cash left."

Dad pulled out his wallet and offered me a twenty dollar bill. "This should keep you going for a couple days. I suspect you'll have plenty of money after the graduation party on Saturday." Dad said. I saw Dad make a note on a tablet as I left. I was officially in debt.

Will and Abby returned from their honeymoon late Friday evening. Both were deeply tanned, rested and relaxed. For the next week Will and Abby were going to spend their nights at Abby's house since a married couple couldn't share one bunk in a bunk bed with me in the bunk above them. They promised to come over for breakfast on Saturday morning and tell everyone about their vacation.

Will and Abby entertained us with stories from their trip to the Virgin Islands over breakfast on Saturday. We teased them that they probably didn't see anything more than the inside of their hotel room. They assured us that they actually got out of their room for fifteen or twenty minutes a day. Will and Abby enjoyed holding and playing with Connor and Noah while we talked.

Mom put all of us to work after breakfast. We chopped veggies, tore lettuce, browned hamburger and mixed ingredients as Mom directed. When we were done an hour later we had a seafood broccoli salad, a taco salad, carrot and raisin salad and enough veggies to make an excellent salad bar for the party.

Mom decided it would be all right for Noah and Connor to come to the party. She and Liz dressed them in cute sailor suits. They carried the boys out to her Caravan while the rest of us brought assorted bowls and containers of salads for the afternoon. We loaded up and headed over to the park in four cars.

The Fritzes, the Longs and the Hendricks were already there when we arrived. The barbeque caterer was set up beside the pavilion. Dad said he had been there with his huge smoker trailer since midnight. We set our salads on a couple tables on the west end of the pavilion.

The other families arrived soon after us. We ended up with macaroni & cheese, baked beans, stuffed mushrooms, potato salad, macaroni salad, chow-chow, vegetable tray with dip, fruit tray with dip, and assorted pies, cakes and cookies. The smell of the roast pigs filled the air with a pungent sweetness. Our guests were going to have a feast.

I had proudly worn my Penn State jersey to the party. Ed and Jeremy had the same idea. Ed wore his Florida jersey. Jeremy had on his Notre Dame jersey. We all hung out with our girlfriends greeting our friends and relatives as they arrived. Paige made it to be with Ed. Ed was enjoying being a part of a couple again.

Noah and Connor were the hit of the party. Everyone had to come over and fuss over them. Andy proudly showed off his sons.

Each family's relatives congregated together. Penny and I moved from table to table visiting with my relatives, her relatives and our friends.

The whole Baer clan showed up for the party. Justin and Sherry brought their sons Billy and Wesley. Joe and Barb brought Betty and Jeffrey. Mr. and Mrs. Baer hung out with my parents. Jon and Amy Miller came too with Brian. The seven year olds, Billy, Brian, and Betty, zoomed wildly around at the park, checking out everything. They were closely followed by five year old Jeffrey, who desperately wanted to be included with anything they did.

Thirteen month old Wesley had just learned to walk. He toddled from parent to parent to grandparent to anyone else. He exercised his three word vocabulary saying "Da-Da", "Mama" and "cookie" constantly. Wesley attracted almost as many oohs and aaahs as Noah and Connor.

Will and Abby hung out with friends from their earlier trips to Algonquin. Rob Stevens and his fiancée Cindy, the two Baer couples, the Millers, Jason Sauder, Katie Landis and her boyfriend, and Zack Hayes all traded remembrances of their time together in Canada. Alex Weaver joined their group a little later.

The caterer did a fabulous job with the barbequed pigs. The sandwiches were excellent. The rest of the food our families made was good too. No one went away from the party hungry.

Our parents called all the graduates over after an hour so we could cut the cake. Actually it was cakes. We had a red velvet cake, a yellow cake, Boston cream pie and a marble cake. Penny and I enjoyed one of our favorites, the Boston cream pie.

My friends and I challenged Will's friends to volleyball when the dessert was done. We taunted them for being "old farts," just like we had done four years ago on our first trip to Algonquin. They teased us for being wet behind the ears, smart aleck kids. We "kids" dominated the first game, winning 21-13. The "old farts" pulled out a close second game, 22-20. We won the final game going away, 21-10.

My friends shook hands with the "old farts" when the game was done. Most of Will's team headed off for more food. Alex Weaver and Zack Hayes hung out with us. Alex looked around and said, "Gee, almost all of my old Algonquin crew is here today. Everyone except Steffany. Is she here somewhere?"

Ed answered, "No. Stef and I dated for awhile after that trip. We had a bad break up. She doesn't hang with our group anymore."

I looked at Alex and asked, "I didn't know you and Zack knew each other."

Alex said, "Sure, Zack and I go way back."

Zack added, "We were in Boy Scouts together. We joined Venturers together. We've been friends for years."

Alex said, "You remember our first trip to Algonquin six years ago?"

Zack answered, "Remember it? That trip changed my life. I found out I could how hard I could work on that trip. That 3 ½ mile portage from Dickson to Opeongo showed me just how tough I could be."

Penny said, "Dickson to Opeongo? We did that portage two years ago."

Zack continued, "That trip to Algonquin made a man out of me – in so many ways."

Alex chuckled. "I guess. Especially that last night. Will's demonstration of how to go down on your girlfriend was memorable."

I interrupted, "My brother demonstrated that?"

Alex answered, "Yes. Rob Stevens and I bugged him the whole trip to teach us how to do that for our girlfriends. He finally taught us how to do it at the outfitters the last night."

Zack smiled a bit. "That was the night Beth and I lost our cherries." He sighed. "It really made a man out of me." Zack lightly punched Alex on the shoulder. "No thanks to you. Beth is ready to surrender her virginity to me and this turkey wouldn't share a rubber."

Alex protested, "Hey. Terri and I had only been doing it for a few days. That bag of condoms represented a lot of future sex to me."

"Will had to practically order Alex to give me one of them."

Penny asked, "Let me get this straight. Alex was in your tent when you had sex the first time?"

Alex laughed. Zack said, "Um ... It was the cabins at the outfitters. The whole group was in the same cabin. Will and Abby had just finished doing it. I think Rob and Cindy were still going. Alex and Terri were in the bunk below Beth and me screwing away when Beth said she was ready to fuck."

Ed said, "That whole thing sounds pretty wild – group sex in one of those small cabins."

Zack answered, "It wasn't group sex exactly. We didn't swap the girls around or anything."

Alex added, "There was a lot of closeness that trip. Terri and I lost our virginities in a tent we shared with Will and Abby. They were asleep inches away from us the first time we made love."

Zack asked, "Do you still go with Terri? I remember the two of you were an item all through high school, even after she moved away."

Alex answered, "No. Long distance relationships suck. We managed to stay a couple for the year we were separated. We both attend the University of Maryland. We stayed together for awhile in college. The two of us had changed too much the year we were apart in high school. We ended up agreeing it was best if we broke up."

Zack said, "I'm sorry to hear that. You and Terri were good together. Have you been with anyone else since then?"

"I've had a couple girlfriends, but nobody serious. How about you Zack?"

Zack chuckled. "I'm in a committed relationship – Coach Burton, the film projector and me. We're inseparable." Everyone laughed at his joke. Zack got a serious look and stared at Tammy and Kathy. "I understand the two of you are going to college with your boyfriends. I hope you understand just how much time they will have to put into football. You aren't going to see much of them."

Kathy said hopefully, "Not during the season – I know."

Zack answered, "We're talking Division I-A for all of you guys. You don't have an off season. You have a time of the year where you play games. The rest of the year you prepare to play games." Zack turned and looked at Penny. "You're the smart one. Break things off clean and go somewhere else for college. Kyle isn't going to have any time for you this fall."

I saw Penny's face display her dismay. I spoke up. "We aren't breaking up, Zack. She is going to continue to be my girlfriend."

"Mmmm." Zack looked at me skeptically. "Sorry, my bad."

"We love each other. We'll make it work," I said emphatically. I wished I was as sure as I tried to sound. I gave Penny a kiss. I whispered in her ear. "We'll make it work – some how." She returned my kiss and hugged me.

Zack turned to Ed and asked, "Before I put my foot in my mouth again, are you and ... uh..."

Ed said, "Paige – Paige McGowan."

" ... trying to stay a couple during college?"

Ed said simply, "No."

Paige always had a flair for the dramatic. She held up her hand. "Everyone. I have an announcement to make." We all paused. Paige grinned. "I want to announce that Ed and I are breaking up tonight. Right after a good bye romp in bed – right Pookie?"

Ed sighed. "Right." He gave her a kiss. "I wish you would come with us to the shore tomorrow."

"I know. I wish I could too. My girlfriends and I spent too much money on a beach house in Rehobath for next week. I can't ditch them."

Zack said, "I see you're going to arrive at Gainesville free as a bird. Coach Meyer will appreciate that." Zack scanned the faces in our group. "All of you guys are playing Division I-A ball. You're going to have to work your tails off to be successful." Zack stared into my eyes. "Especially you, Kyle. I'm counting on you again like I did back in high school. You better come through for me."

I gulped. I knew Zack meant exactly what he said. I better not let him down.

Zack and Alex said their good byes and headed off for the food pavilion. The other couples scattered, meeting and greeting more friends and family.

Heather Miller agreed to help Andy take the twins home when it was their nap time. She was going to bring our family van back to the picnic after Andy got the boys settled. The party was starting to wind down when she finally got back a couple hours later – around 5 pm.

My friends and I helped our parents get the party cleaned up when the guests finally left. We packed all the leftovers in the cars and headed home. Dad presented me with the box all my friends and relatives had put their graduation cards and gifts in. It was nearly overflowing. Penny rode home with me.

When we got to my house I asked Penny, "Do you want to do anything together tonight?"

"No silly. I need to pack for tomorrow. I'll see you at 9 o'clock."

We kissed before we parted. I pushed my tongue in her mouth. She met it with hers. The kiss quickly escalated beyond what I planned. I dropped a hand down and gently squeezed her left breasts and flicked my thumb across it.

Penny suddenly broke away. "We need to keep that for tomorrow Kyle." She got out of the car. "I have to pack tonight." She blew me a kiss. "Keep that thought, that very dirty thought in your mind. We can act on it tomorrow night."

I called, "I love you." as she walked away.

"I love you too, sweetie."

I popped my head in Andy's room when I went upstairs. He was getting ready to give the boys a bath. I asked, "You and Heather? Did you? The two of you were alone here for a long time this afternoon."

"Did we what?"

"You know ... end up in bed?"

"No!" Andy sighed. "She is willing to be friends again but that's all. I've learned to accept that. We spent the whole time in the kitchen talking after Noah and Connor went to sleep."

"The two of you make a nice couple," I said.

"It isn't going to happen, Kyle," Andy insisted. "She says we are too combustible."

I felt bad for Andy. Andy wanted to be with Heather more than any of his other girlfriends. I wished there would be a way I could help him but there wasn't. Hopefully someday he could find someone as good as Heather for him.

I finally had time to look through the graduation cards and presents. My haul from the afternoon was astounding. My friends and relatives had given me close to $650 in gifts! That was going to help immensely next week when we went down to the shore.

My friends and I were very lucky. Brandon's uncle owned McCafferty Construction, one of the biggest firms in Lancaster County. His uncle loaned us his vacation house in Ocean City New Jersey for a week at no charge. I doubt we could have spent Senior Week at the shore otherwise. Renting space down there was too expensive for me or my friends.

We met in front of my house Sunday morning at 9 o'clock to head for the shore. Penny rode with me. Ed rode with Brandon. Hal drove Tammy, Jeremy and Kathy. Hal and I followed Brandon's black Accura to Gap and then south on Route 41. The traffic wasn't bad. Few people were heading for the beach on a Sunday morning. Traffic picked up a little after we crossed the Delaware River in Chester. We passed a lot more people heading home as we drove further southeast into Jersey.

All of us stopped for lunch at a small restaurant on the way. We finally reached Ocean City around noon. Hal and I followed Brandon through town, street after street until we found 23rd Street. I followed Brandon around the corner when we got to Haven Avenue and pulled in the concrete driveway behind him. Hal pulled up to the curb in front of the house.

The house was a huge two and a half story wood sided house painted light gray. The garage doors on the left were framed with columns. The entryway door was in the center with a bank of three windows on the right. There was a small balcony above the garage on the second floor. Brandon told us the house had four bedrooms and three baths. It was located only a few blocks form the ocean. It must have cost his uncle a small fortune. Brandon confirmed that. His uncle paid $3.2 million for the place two years ago.

Everyone followed Brandon up the steps to the front door carrying our suitcases. Brandon unlocked the door and swung it open. We stepped inside and marveled at the ground floor. The living room opened to the right. It had big overstuffed beige chairs and two matching couches. A dining room table separated the living room space from the kitchen. The kitchen featured a wrap around island. The family room was to the right from the kitchen. It had a full entertainment center and a fireplace.
