The story of the dark elves is one of betrayal, they have betrayed almost everyone at some point and they were betrayed by almost everyone at some point too, so it is not a great wonder that they do not trust anyone even after all this time.
I should warn you though, that the earliest parts of this story are second or third hald knowledge as they happened long before my time.
The story starts in the early skirmishes quite long before the main orc-elf war.
There were two brothers looking to win the hand of the same woman. They competed by all the normal ways of trying to outdo each other both in war and in things like writing and performing ballads. The woman was flattered by the attention and thus did not want to choose, so the brothers tried harder and harder and the older brother became jealous of the younger as he thought the younger was doing better in the attempts.
After his jealousy got high, some of his behavior caused some negative reactions from the woman and he’s jealousy thus rose even higher. So he hatched a plan to get rid of the younger brother or at minimum diminish his reputation.
He spies on his younger brother as the brother plans his next raid on the orcs, and then sends a warning letter about the coming attack to the leader of the orcish garrison that is the target.
As a result the orcs ambushed the attacking elves and killed about half of them, including the younger brother, before the elves managed to disengage.
No one thought anything special about the ambush, as it did happen from time to time, not often, as orcs were not so good at war as we were, but every now and then one of their scrying spells or similar magic managed to detect an upcoming attack.
Thus with the younger brother out of the way, the older was able to win over the woman. They were married a couple of years later and had a single daughter before the war.
The betrayal of the brother would likely not have been detected except that in one of the very early skirmishes of the actual war the same garrison was attacked and destroyed and the letter was found. Of course the older bother had not used his name, but even fairly simple divining magic could find who had written it, so the clan leader confronted the older brother about it with two of his warriors in tow. In response the man with the clan leader stabbed the leader in the back and then they attacked the woman warrior together and won.
