While the rest of the church volunteer gardeners planted peas, and parsnips, and potatoes, Emma and Alina chose to visit the southernmost boundary of the grounds where, according to Daniel, mushrooms were likely to flourish. Sure enough Emma located one of the little darlings nestled near the fence, barely poking above the ground.
“So what do we do now?” Alina asked.
“Plant it, I guess,” Emma said. “You dig the hole and I’ll drop it in.”
“How come I have to dig?” Alina asked.
“Well, first of all, I’m the one who found the seed mushroom, and second of all, you’ve got boots.”
“We probably don’t even need the shovel; this dirt is so soft we could dig it up with our hands,” Alina said. “Also, I’m pretty sure mushrooms don’t have seeds. They have spores, or something like that.”
“I’m sure you’re right,” Emma said. “But we should plant this baby anyway. You never know.”
Using the shovel, Alina scooped out some soil. Emma dropped the little mushroom in the hole. “Now cover it over,” Emma said.
Alina scraped soil over the hole, then patted it gently.
“Okay, now what?” she asked.
They stared at the ground. Then they laughed. “It’s not like they’re going to pop right up,” Emma said.
“But it shouldn’t take nine months, either,” Alina said, and she leaned the shovel against the fence. Then, turning around, she said, “Anything happening?”
