Chapter 2: Revenge
Author's note: Robert and Burt are real characters from my childhood and they were as described here. Robert was a real prick in high school. I finally got him to stop picking on me when I heard from a psychiatrist on TV on how to deal with bullies. When I started to ignore Robert no longer giving him the reactions he was looking for he eventually left me alone and started picking on others. After high school he spent some time in jail on drug charges. I don't know if he became someone's bitch but he was a totally different person after he got out. What's ironic is that as much of a prick as he was in school after he got out of jail I found him working in a nursing home caring for the elderly. Of course their names have been changed.
"Man that was not funny. Just because I can't find the goo doesn't make me feel any better."
<My apologies; it was not my intention to frighten you>
"What? Who said that?"
<I did. Please do not be alarmed. I will not harm you.>
"Who are you? Why can I hear you in my head?
<It is difficult to explain the details of what I am in terms you can understand. Give me a moment while I search your mind for comparable information.>
While I was waiting I got up from where I had fallen. Brushing the dirt from my clothes I checked my body for injuries.
<You will not find any injuries from your fall. Although, you had sustained some injuries I healed them while you were unconscious.>
"Thanks; but what kind of injuries?"
<The way you had landed you had shattered both knee caps, fractured your left thigh bone, and broken both forearms and wrists. The impact of your head had caused sever trauma to the frontal lobe of your brain. Had I not effected repairs of your infrastructure you would have ceased to function.>
"Ceased to function? What are you some kind of machine?"
<A bio-engineered lifeform to be more specific. I am primarily comprised of biological technology and nano technology. Because of the limited room inside your cranium I had to integrate the biological part of my structure into your brain. This in essence makes us one. I sent the nanites into your bloodstream. That is how I effected the repairs of your infrastructure.
In the simplest terms I am an artificial intelligence. The nanites were part of my self-repair ability. Since I am now a part of your physical brain they consider you to be a part of me and now repair you. For example if you were to lose an arm or leg the nanites would grow a new one. If an organ failed they would repair it. Another advantage is that they continue to replace dead cells. Which in essence makes you immortal. You will not get sick or grow old. Without further studies I can only assume you cannot even be killed short of severing your head from your body.>
"Wow, to say I am stunned, impressed, and speechless all at the same time would be an understatement."
I put the pod, for that is what it was, in my pocket and walked back home. I had a lot to think about.
The next day was a school day and I was not looking forward to going. Yeah, I couldn't be permanently injured by the bullies now. But the AI didn't say that it wouldn't hurt. So I steeled myself for the inevitable. Before I even got to the front doors I saw Robert and Burt waiting there. Presumably for me.
Burt was not as much of a problem as Robert was. When I met Burt when Robert wasn't around he was almost nice to me. He had one of those dads that thought he was a man's man. Football, weightlifting, etc. God forbid his son should show any kind of weakness, which includes being nice. As long as Burt wasn't around his Dad or Robert he was nice to me. But he still felt he had to show a specific image of himself when others were watching.
Robert was my main problem; he seemed to thrive off of the pain and anguish he caused me. I didn't realize it at the time but Robert was really a coward. He would never approach me by himself. He would always have at least two others with him to hold me. What was he afraid of; that I'd actually fight back? That wasn't going to happen.
I wasn't afraid of Robert I just didn't like being picked on. I found ways to avoid him like walking all the way around the building to get inside. Sometimes I would even antagonize him by getting him in trouble for cheating. Like I said I was a smart person, I got good grades and Robert didn't.
Today was no different except for the AI in my brain. Here comes Robert, man this sure is getting old quick. For once Robert approached me alone, without his goons. 'Okay, ' I thought to myself, 'let's get this over with.'
"Hey punk where do you think you're going?" Robert asked
"To class to get an education; something you would know anything about." I responded
"You fucking prick; how dare you talk to me like that."
"Like your something special; what makes you think I'm going to submit to you? Just because your stronger than I am and you and your friends beat me up everyday doesn't mean I'm going to be afraid of you or cower to you."
That really pissed him off; so he swung at me and hit me in the stomach. He always hit me in the stomach like he was afraid to hit me anywhere else.
While I felt the impact of his fist and subconsciously reacted to it I realized it didn't hurt like it usually did.
"Is that the best you've got this morning Robert? It didn't even hurt."
Getting even angrier he hit me again. This time I didn't react. I knew my stomach muscles were not that strong so I was as surprised as Robert was but I didn't show it. Just because he was bigger and stronger than I was didn't mean I had to be afraid of him.
I raised both arms and pushed against Robert's chest. "Go away Robert and leave me alone. I'm sick of you bothering me everyday." So I pushed against him with everything I thought I had; which normally would just have pushed him a few feet away. But to my surprise he flew about a hundred feet across the school yard. I just stood therewith my mouth hanging open. After a moment I ran to Robert and knelt beside him.
"Are you alright? Man, I am sorry. I didn't know that would happen."
"Get away from me you freak. I don't know what just happened here but if you tell anyone I am going to kick your ass for real and your parents will be visiting you in the hospital." Robert spat at me in anger.
"I said I was sorry. Why do you have to be such a dick, Robert? At least I'm man enough to apologize when I hurt someone." I responded.
He refused my offer to help him up so I just stood and back away a few feet. After he got up he glared that 'if-looks-could-kill' look at me, turned and walked away.
I was soon to learn other things that had change for me since my encounter with the alien AI yesterday. Apparently, the nanites had done more than repair my body; they had made upgrades. I didn't have time to consult my companion on it because the bell had just rung and I had five minutes to get to class which was math.
I breezed through math class. What was used to be easy before was almost primitive now. Math had always been easy for me to do. But now this class seemed almost rudimentary. Then it occurred to me that computers had incredible computational abilities and I had access to an alien artificial intelligence. Its computational abilities were light years beyond any earth computer. This merging essentially made me the most advanced human on the planet.
