Sleep was strange for Kevin. He knew he was asleep because his breathing had slowed to a steady pace and he could feel his entire body relaxing. This feeling was different for Kevin because sleep, for him, had never been like this. In his old life he could remember falling asleep and never knowing anything until he had woken up the next morning. This fact only confirmed the doctor's suspicion that he was, in fact, a different person. Being the easygoing type of guy Kevin was, he chose not to get overly worked up about this fact. Instead, he decided to toss this event up as another freak accident of nature.
Having heard what the doctor had said about how he had healed and seen the strange devices that the doctor and nurse had used, even the device on his arm was strange (he still had to figure out what that was), Kevin came to the conclusion that he must have somehow been transported into the future. He laughed in his head at the thought that there was probably some kid in the past that was from the future and having the same trouble he was. He decided to wait until he work up to find out what year this was.
The Future. That was a new thought to him. Kevin had always been the adventurous type of person and knew this accident would bring him a lot of fun. Assuming, of course, that he could convince his 'parents' that he had amnesia and not give away any hints as to his actual origins.
Kevin could feel his body start to wake up from his forced sleep. He stretched out his arms and legs as he acquired control over them. Now that was a strange experience. He had never thought of sleep as a lack of control but that was how it felt as he woke up. When he was sure he had assumed full control over his body he slowly opened his eyes.
He was in the same room as when he had fallen asleep, but now there was a nurse standing next to his bed instead of half the hospital staff. She was looking over an instrument that resembled a tablet pc only slightly smaller and about the thickness of a clipboard. On a cart next to her were a group of metallic tubs and another of those instruments that resembled a .45 and a syringe. Kevin decided to call it a .45 for now. It wasn't the device that had caught his eye, however, it was the fact that the cart had no legs yet remained floating at waist level that had. This fact, if nothing else, assured him that he was indeed in the future.
"Um Nurse," he said in a sleepy voice while at the same time wiping the sleep from his eyes. "What's that for?" He pointed at the .45 that she had just begun to fiddle with.
"Oh Kevin, you're awake now. I was just about to give you a memory recession shot.
"Memory recession?" Kevin questioned, trying to think of any sort of technology named that in his time.
"Yes, it causes memories that may have been buried or damaged in your bodies healing process to come to the surface." She answered affixing one of the metallic tubs to the end of the gun. "From what we know of its properties the memories are still fractured but your mind can't handle broken memories so it fills in the blank spots with what we have began to call, memory imprints." Kevin had a look on his face when she stopped that showed how little he understood of what she had said. When the nurse saw it she burst out laughing. "I'm sorry," she continued, "I don't get many young patients here so most people are used to me going on and on about medical technology."
"Oh I don't mind at all," Kevin replied, "I actually understood most of that except for that last part about the memory imprints. What are those?"
"Have you ever looked into the sun for a second and then looked away and seen white spots in your vision?" Kevin nodded his head. "Well that's kinda like what memory imprints are. All your memories are put into your mind and even though some can be lost there will still be some sort of imprint or shadow, if you will, of that memory. So what this medicine does is inject a bunch of nanobots into your body that go and find those shadows and put them back together with your intact memory. Here lie back and rest now. You will be falling asleep soon. Good night and heal well." She pressed the gun thing to his arm and there was a slight hiss as it injected the silver liquid into his body.
