Chapter 1

There is a large group of Cajuns in Alabama. Most of them are located north of Mobile and around Jackson Alabama.

Most live in a shack on one of the bayous many live in shanty boats.

If a person knows how, he or she can live off the swamps. There is plenty out there to keep a person from starving.

That person must not be critical of what they eat.

Tadburn Yates was a Cajun, His mother was part Choctaw part Cajun. His father was all Cajun.

Tad had never known his father, he was killed in Viet Nam before Tad had been born.

Tad's mother lived in Jackson Alabama, she had bought a cheap duplex with death benefits of her late husband. She received a check every month, not much but enough to raise her son and put Tad through school.

Tad's grand father died the month after Tad graduated from high school.

Grand father Yates left his property to Tad. He owned a square mile of swamp with only one place above the flood level of the river. There was a large rounded hill in the exact center of the property. Nothing much grew there but at times hundreds of deer would go there when the river was flooding.

Tad inherited his grand fathers house boat. It was large, two bed rooms, two baths and a kitchen living area combined.

It was built of real thick fiber glass.

Tad had often stayed with his grand father on week ends and school holidays.

The old gentleman tough Tad many things about living in the swamps.

As soon as the funeral was over Tad moved his things from his mothers house to his floating one. Tad had more space than his mothers two apartments had.

A power line through the swamps gave Tad's home lights and water. There was a good well with a pump in it.

Tad's mother had established her and Tad's Native American Citizenship when he was born. As a Choctaw Indian Tad could get all his college expenses paid by the government and even spending money.

Tad had graduated at sixteen. He was exceptionally bright.

His I.Q. test placed Tad at almost genius level.

He wanted to wait a few years before going to college. He thought he was to young to fit in there.

Tad heard a car stop on the bridge and the sound of doors opening.

A mans voice said " It is a shame to waste a pretty young thing like you honey, but you know too much to let live".

A girls voice said " I swear I can keep my mouth shut, please don't do this".

A different mans voice said " Our boss would never trust you to do that girl".

Then he said " I got the concrete block tied to her leg, Dan, let's get her in the water and get out of here before a car comes". Tad had slipped his feet out of his rubber boots as soon as he realized they were going to throw a girl off the bridge. Tad hit the water the same time the girl did, he followed the girl down to the bottom.

Tad was in swamp water and could see nothing. He grabbed her clothes and pulled himself down to her feet. One foot was tied to a concrete block with soft wire. They heard the sound of the car above leaving.

Down river two miles was the entrance to the bayou his house was on.

He ran full speed to it and cut back to a fast idle going up it to his house.

Tad tied the boat to a floating pier and helped the girl get out.

Tad told her to follow him and unlocked a heavy steel door to the inside of the house boat.

The girl asked who this beautiful place belonged to.

She said " You live well, this is shear luxury".

He got it out for her and showed her the guest bath room.

Tad told her that a washer and dryer were behind those louvered doors in the kitchen end of the room.

She said " Either one will do".

She was still standing in front of the dryer. Tad asked if she would like for him to put her things in the dryer. She said she would be grateful if he would.

She said she had never used one before. Tad told her to sit down on the couch with her wine he would join her in a minute.

He was going to get out of his wet clothes. He threw her clothes in and started the dryer.

Tad was back in dry jeans and a shirt in minutes. He was barefoot.

He opened the washer and threw only a pair of socks a pair of jeans and a shirt in.

Tad sat on the couch with the girl.

He said " I am Tadburn Yates, that is shortened to Tad". He told the girl " I live here alone and the nearest neighbor is over five miles away". He said " I fish for a living and am going on to college in a couple of years".

He asked her to tell him her name.

She asked if it would be alright if she only gave her first name. Tad shrugged.

She said " Just call me Lee".

Tad asked why those people had tried to kill her. She said she knew to much to live she guessed.

Tad asked where she was from.

Lee said she had finished high school in Virginia.

Tad asked if that was where she was from. Lee said " No, but I can never go back there now and I would like to not talk about that place.

Tad asked how old she was.

She said she was sixteen. Tad told her that was his age as well.

Tad asked her what she wanted him to do with her.

She asked if she could stay there with him for a while.

Tad said he was not used to having another person living with him. He asked if there was not some place she could go.

She said she had no money, no ID, no way she could get a job and worst of all no place to go.

She begged him to let her stay until she could figure what she needed to do.

Tad told her she was asking a hell of a lot of him.

She promised to do all the house work but she admitted she could not cook.

She said that all her life there had been someone hired to do the cooking.

Tad said " O shit you are going to be useless to me, I guess there was always some one hired to do the house keeping too ".

Lee said " Not when I went to a girls school in Virginia, we had to keep our own rooms neat there.

Tad said "Lee if I let you stay here I will have to buy you some clothes and a hell of a lot of other things".

Tad said he was not that blessed with cash right then.

Tad said his check from the government would come next week.

Tad said the people he sold his fish to owed him two hundred dollars though.

Tad told Lee that when her clothes were dry and she got dressed he could take her to Jackson and get his money.

He could let her shop at the Wal-Mart there.

At Wal-Mart later Lee tried not to cost Tad any more than necessary.

Tad had her buy two pairs of jeans with boot legs. Tad let her choose blouses that matched. He bought her two simple dresses. He bought her a comb and brush set and a nail care kit. They got her a tooth brush and paste. She bought a six pack of white socks. She was terribly embarrassed as she put a large box of Maxi Pads in the cart.

Tad bought Lee a pair of white rubber fisherman's boots and a pair of dress penny loafers.

The girl didn't have a purse, Tad let her select one and a bill fold to go in it.

They had a laugh when Tad put a penny in her billfold for good luck.

They got out of the store without spending all of Tad's two hundred dollars.

They spent a bit more on a really good steak at Jedi's Steak House. He was an uncle of Tad's.

Tad only paid for one steak the other was free.

During the high speed boat ride home Lee got cold. Tad had her sit in his lap and put his rain suit jacket on backwards.

She rolled the sleeves up and Tad let her steer some.

Back at his house boat Tad had a beer, Lee had wine.

Tad said it was near bed time, they were going to get up at daylight and go run his lines.

Lee asked if Tad was going to make a fisher woman of her. Tad said he was.

Tad asked Lee where she wanted to sleep, in the guest bed room or with him.

( Lee was afraid that Tad would send her away, She thought she could make him want to keep her by letting him have sex with her. She was scared of leaving ).

Tad directed Lee to run them in to Jackson to sell their fish.

They had to wait their turn at the dock, there were three boats ahead of them.

Lee had every man's attention as she held the boat in place in the current.

When they could take their place at the dock several men helped unload just to get a better look at the beauty running Tad's boat.

It was only a short walk to the grocery store that Tad preferred to shop for his food needs.

At the meat counter Tad rang the bell to call the butcher. He asked for two U.S. Prime rib eye steaks cut an inch and a half thick.

Tad had Lee get potatoes for baking and Romaine lettuce for a salad while he waited for his steaks.

Tad bought beer and wine.

At the check out counter Tad showed the clerk an Alabama drivers licensee that showed him to be twenty one years old.

As they walked back to the boat loaded down with their purchases Lee asked how Tad had gotten a drivers licensee.

Tad told her he would get her one soon. He asked Lee if she could drive.

Lee said she had learned in school.

Tad told her that was good because he would need her to take a driver's test for her licensee.

Tad told Lee they were going to Pensacola Florida after running the lines the next day.

Tad took a side trip and called on a aunt on his fathers side of the family.

She lived in a shanty boat close to town. Her daughter had gotten killed in an auto wreck two years before. She would have been twenty years old now if she were still living.

Tad asked his aunt if he could use her daughter's social security card and get a copy of her birth certificate.

Tad told aunt Kate that Lee was a run away from a bad home and he was taking her in for a while. He told her he wanted to help Lee change her identify.

Kate's daughter had been named Danna Lee Yates.

Kate found her daughters card and a copy of her birth certificate.

Kate hugged Lee as she gave it to Tad.

Kate said " Girl this makes you a Yates now, live up to your new name". She said that the girl the card had belonged to had been a very gifted and pretty girl.

Kate kissed Tad and told him to come to see her more often.

It was still early in the afternoon. Tad had Lee pilot the boat up the bayou to the highway bridge. There was an old house falling in there. Along side it was a large concrete building.

Tad tied the boat up to a concrete dock and led Lee to the building.

Tad unlocked a steel security door then an inner door and turned on the lights. Lee was in a large garage with a one year old Lincoln Town Car and a recent model pickup. Both were the same gold color.

Lee asked Tad if they were his. Tad told Lee his grand father had left them to him when he had died.

Tad said they were going to Florida the next day in the pickup. He wanted her to drive it now so she could show him how well she could drive.

Tad activated a remote controlled steel door in front of the Ford Ranger and asked Lee to drive him down the highway to Mackintosh and back.

Lee was an excellent driver, she got the compact truck up to the speed limit and they were in Macintosh in about a half hour. Tad had her turn around and drive back to the garages.

Lee backed the truck to where it had been before and shut it off. Tad kissed her and told her she was probably a better driver than he was.
