Ben Ping: Born 1957 in Cixi, China. Immigrated to SF when Ben was 3. BA in music from UCLA after AA degree from San Francisco City College. After grad, worked as guitar teacher at LA Harbor College. Played in Led Zepplin tribute band called Black Dog where Jake found him. Wife is Lisa and she is in the RN program when Jake meets them.

Ted Duncan: Born 1950. Works as a paramedic for Southern Medical Services Pomona division when Jake and Celia find him. Bass player for Black Dog.

Phillip Jenkins: Gay, singer. Laura’s roommate before she and Jake got together as a couple. Sings backup for both Jake and Celia and is the lead singer for V-tach.

Lenny Harris: Lead guitarist and songwriter for V-tach. Will help Jake work on his solo album as well.

Dr. David Boulder DDS: Born July 1944. Was having an affair with Laura when Jake first met her. Wife is Barbara Boulder, born 1948

Greg Gahn, Mormon tour manager for Intemperance and, later, Matt Tisdale solo tours. Born 1953. Very fond of cocaine but does not drink or smoke or use marijuana (except on one notable occasion).

Joseph Best II: Laura’s oldest sibling. Born: 9/17/57, which makes him just turned 39 years old at the time he is introduced in 1996. Is now a Jack Mormon, no longer contributing to the church, drinks alcohol and coffee, hunts, fishes, etc. Working class. Got his girlfriend pregnant when he was twenty (1977) and was treated poorly by church members and family even though he married her. Still keeps in contact with family but only occasionally as they are judgmental. Stayed in Pocatello when the rest of the family moved away in 1978 (Laura was 13). This is what started moving her away from the church as she always had special relationship with “Joey”. Brian Best is their firstborn son, 19 years old at the time of the intro of the character. He has followed in his father’s footsteps and got his girlfriend pregnant. Baby is born in late September (the day of the TSF) and is the first great-grandchild of their parents. Joey works as a garbage truck driver for the city, got the job when he got married (was hefting cans then). Lower middle class but comfortable. Good looking, strong, in decent shape since he’s an outdoorsman.

Sarah Benbow/Best: Joseph II’s wife. Born 3/14/58. Also raised devout Mormon. Family completely disowned her when she got pregnant. Nice, loving, good mother and proud grandmother. Understanding though disappointed as she had hopes for her children to go to college. She works part-time as a medical transcriptionist.

Brian Best, Joey II and Sarah’s firstborn, born 1978, works as an apprentice meatcutter.
