The Golden Rule of a modern day drifter:
... Get out of that rut while you can...
A change in your life, doesn’t make you a quitter
But living your life means more than an hour glass with no sand
Ridin’ my thumb along life’s lonesome highway
Tells me that tomorrow holds my future, let it come what may
I’ll be going where no one knows my name
Yet a modern day drifter will never complain
Saying so-long to a lie that’s kept me tied down
I’m now living free on the road, from sunup to sundown
Any time is the best time for saying goodbye
Not answering to anyone, who asks how or why
A modern day drifter has plenty of time to waste
Yet a drifter needs to own nothing but a smile on his face
Anybody who’s somebody will surely understand
Why I slipped that noose - to become my own man
Breathing second-hand air means my life has gone wrong
But when morning comes, I’ll still be just as gone
Anybody who’s somebody will surely understand
A drifter needs plenty of room, just to be his own man
So long to a lost love that’s kept me tied down
Now, I’ll keep on the move from town to town
Anytime is the right time for saying goodbye
Not answering to anyone who asks how or why
Since I’ve become a modern day drifter
I’ve learned that no ring fits my nose or my finger
Anytime is the right time for saying so-long
And to remind you again, come tomorrow I’ll be just as gone
Living life in the fast lane doesn’t make you a winner
Just as riding your thumb doesn’t make you a beginner
I’ll be leaving you with nothing but the words of a song
I’m tired of taking the blame for all that goes wrong
Happiness means more than an hourglass half full of sand
And anybody who’s somebody will surely understand,
That breathing second-hand air was never in our plan
Anybody who has ever been somebody will surely understand...
That anybody who wants to be somebody will need to take a stand...
Now I’m a modern day drifter with a Timex strapped on both hands
Leaving you with nothing but the words of a sad country song
Doesn’t mean we may never pass this way again
Yet day after day, life in the fast lane is never the same
But still ... Living life my way, has been more fun than anything I’ll ever do again...
