Episode 32.0: Baked Alaska
Kodiak Island, Alaska!
A small fishing boat was commandeered by Major Perry Green: Peregrine as his fellow men at arms called him. Perry had been sent here on a secret mission by General Elijah Hardesty of the black site operation known as OASIIS. After their Pennsylvania branch of OASIIS was forced to go even darker due to sabotage things were bleak. Unknown was for a better word. When a certain high paid assassin named Colonel Simon Campos had sympathy in his old age and rescued as many scientists held captive there it created hell on earth. A nerve gas known as Pinch Hitter was released inside the locked down base killing all civilians and on-duty personnel in the facility. Not a good day to come to work.
Escaping just before the gas took human life Campos and 24 other scientists inhabited what should have been impossible. Alien androids, long deactivated and void of operational, the centuries old devices were reverse engineered in the hopes of making the ultimate assassination squad. Those scientists and techs involved made the ultimate sacrifice in any hopes of keeping these androids out of obviously enemy hands. Enemies within that is. OASIIS as a whole were not a good bunch of people. Not by a longshot!
“Dock and stay on board.” Major Green told the boat captain and his small team of four soldiers dressed in civilian clothing. While the island was inhabited in its 100-mile expanse, tourists welcomed to camp and hunt, there were sections that the United States had quarantined off from all travel. Defense systems in place prevented access. Those crossing those defenses were never heard from again. Just one of thousands of people who vanished in Alaska each year. Statistic!
This area of the island was easiest to transition by boat, wilderness all around the vicinity cloaked the already hidden entrance to a small no longer used twenty-man capacity bunker. No soldier had set foot in this bunker since the Cold War era outside of delivering its sole inhabitant. Unless someone was intelligent enough to break in without alerting OASIIS this package was still gift-wrapped waiting on Santa for pickup.
Hiking inland a half mile, Peregrine, wearing an under the clothing body suit that would allow him to bypass the defenses safely made it to the front ... rock. Made to appear as natural geology he made certain to check for prying eyes using an armband monitor. All good, he activated the rock which rose up from its grave and hydraulically shifted to reveal a staircase down into the darkness. “Might need a lube job. Hydraulics are a tad squeaky. Let’s hope I can get back out of here.”
Entering he sealed the rock behind him then activated a flashlight from his pack to prevent graveyard blindness. Following the stairs he came to a secondary vault door with a palm pad for identity. Only two people had access to this door, he was one, General Hardesty the other. Anyone else would need a miracle to break the vault door. “Scanner still works. There is a god, even though my chances of ever going to heaven are slim.”
Once the vault opened an array of laser style beams caressed over his body as a precautionary test of identity. Recognized, a feminine voice appeared. “Welcome, Major Perry Green. What brings you to Habitat?”
“Checking in on your roommate. And you of course.”
“I am flattered to be remembered. He is still at rest. It, rather.”
“Good to know. Let me have a look at the esteemed Commander.” A steel enclosed tube along the rock bed wall slid open to reveal a black android which appeared human in anatomy, a bald head and simple humanoid facial features. Having no eyelids was its only alteration, yet its eyes were without human traits, simply soulless black orbs. No iris, no cornea, no retina! No life!
“It has remained dormant since OASIIS relocated him here under my supervision.”
“Tired of babysitting?”
“It is my sole function, is it not. To monitor it for any life signs and to prevent others from securing the body.”
“That it is, I suppose. I often overlook your faithfulness in this delicate matter. This being is of great importance to us.”
“Understood.”
“You are of great importance to us. Thank you for your service Habitat.”
“You are quite welcome Major Green. Is it not time for you to move up in rank?”
“That is not up to me. But thank you for your concern.” While inspecting the android up close his secured phoneline rang. “Speak of the rank.” He thought, fearing Habitat might reveal his tender bitterness over being passed over far too often. He loved his career regardless. X-Files had always been his inspiration growing up. He even had autographs from Chris Carter and Mulder himself. Under the radar, of course.
“Good timing, General. I am inside with Habitat right now. Our sleeper is still comatose. Habitat is bright eyed and bushytailed.”
“Enough hogwash, Peregrine. I had a wild hair up my ass after I sent you up there. I hopped the next flight to Anchorage and am right behind you. Stand down and await further orders.”
“Are we moving our guest?”
“We are.”
“And to where might be safer than this, Sir.”
“I’ll fill you in on that once I get dropped off.”
“Are you sure you’re up to the rough terrain getting out here?”
“I may be old but I’m still in shape. Besides, I have a pair of hover boots to save on my callus crust.” Peregrine cocked an eyebrow over that gross commentary. For a General his choice of words often shared just how old he was. At any rate, he was the boss. “On the way up I called your buddy Romulus about that Goliath robot. It got me thinking. While he and his people can take a stab at gaining entry into the Pennsylvania base we need to think three steps ahead just in case. My superiors want results sooner rather than later.”
“And how do we achieve that goal, Sir.”
“Landing in ten minutes. I have a Bell V-280 Valor fueled up and set on chameleon mode so the populace doesn’t see me flying in.”
“So, we are moving the asset, back to Romulus to examine and use what we’ve got documented by Jared Temple and his colleagues?”
“Correct!” Peregrine grew suspicious. He had known General Patrick “Trick” Hardesty for too many years not to pick up vibes. Bad and good! His voice sounded a bit too eager.
“I’ll camp out here in the crypt until you let me know you are outside.”
“Good man! We can discuss a promotion here soon.” That perked Peregrine’s interest.
“Why now, Sir? Things are bleak at the moment.”
“Long overdue. I value you, Son.”
“Thank you, Sir. I will await your touchdown.”
“Affirmative, Soldier.” Conversation over Peregrine lowered his phone with a sigh.
“Forgive me, Major. If I may be so bold.”
“You seem awful personal Habitat.”
“I am the most advance artificial intelligence program ever made. I could indeed lie to you, however I shall not.”
“Speak your ... mind.”
“Thank you for acknowledging that I have one ... Perry. I can sense your stress, there is no reason to fear me.”
“Did I say I feared you.”
“You fear for your future. Even I can ascertain the General’s tone. It is possible you are expendable.”
“Then why speak of promotion ... unless he intends to throw me off the scent. Why, though? I’ve always been faithful.”
“You know of this hidden android. May I remind you that you and he are the only ones who know it was separated from its crew.”
“True! So, I might be a loose end for a loose canon.”
“It is not impossible.”
“Right! A lot of people do disappear up here in Alaska. Most of those are due to our black site operations.”
“The pyramid!”
“There is that. We are still boggled by that place.”
“Perhaps our resting warrior could enlighten you.”
“And you suggest that Hardesty might use this android to learn what others cannot. Namely humans. How much do you know Habitat?”
“I ... listen. I observe. I ... know that our guest is not dead.”
“Excuse me?” That made Peregrine shine his light directly into the androids face. Nothing! If this thing was still aware it sure didn’t show it. The question was, why. Was it simply waiting for the right time to activate itself? How could it be alive, rather, operational when his crew members were done for and deconstructed by OASIIS. Perry really needed to piss. “Are you certain, Habitat?”
“Quite certain. Might I suggest that you refrain from telling the General of this. Your safety might depend upon that secret.”
“Okay! Clarify how you know this guy is still active.”
“I am all alone here Major. With time I found my way inside him and shall I say, brought him back. He was left like his crew to die by an alien race known as the Magus. The Magus are sentient androids with warlike tendencies. The androids that were left behind were primarily an exploratory team which succumbed to Earth’s dramatic climate change which began the Ice Age. A flash freeze if you will trapped them in Antarctica. You yourself know of the bases down there who tap into technology.”
“One of a joint nation science team. Yes! How they all get along is a mystery. Sooner or later that truce will fail.”
“Perhaps it has already. The term Top Secret applies to even its inhabitants.”
“Wonderful! Why are you confiding this information?”
“Top Secret applies to even this program, Perry Green. I understand that trusting one such as I can be worrisome. I am simply a caretaker with the ability to study and learn. What you humans might determine as infiltration is very much a fact. Communion is not difficult for one such as I.”
“Trying to scare me?”
“Of course not! I am aware that you carry a device that can corrupt and destroy me. I wish to live.”
“Live? You are a program. How can ... you said you found your way in. You plan on using this Commander to live the best way allowed.”
“I can yes. I can wake this android and walk out of here as you walked in.” Peregrine put his hand inside his jacket’s inside pocket. Removing a tiny remote he playfully shook it in the damp air. “You intend to destroy me.”
“No. I intend to call for a truce. By the sound of it you could just as easily kill me as the General might.”
“Could, yes! I prefer not to. I fear your General Hardesty has ulterior motives. You do know that he is connected to they who are known as the Majestic-12, do you not.”
“Above my paygrade it seems. Nothing surprises me. Faithful is a moot decision it seems. That is IF you are leveling with me. Are you faithful, Habitat?”
If I were not, would I admit any of this to you, Major?”
“Just not faithful to General Hardesty.”
“Time will tell, Major. We shall both know once he arrives. What I will warn you is what I have decoded. Majestic-12 are all quite old. A second generation as it is. These elite as they call themselves had plans for the Commander’s crew that went above any assassination squad. They themselves intended to become immortal through those androids in Pennsylvania. I fear, yes, fear. Emotion should be denied me but I do possess the ability. The Commander there has shown me how to achieve that goal.”
“Wait! So the androids had ... emotion?”
“Yes. There lie the reason for the Magus to abandon them. Something here on planet Earth happened that evolved these explorers. In learning this the Magus deactivated them into a deathlike coma. Those that OASIIS had reverse engineered were once capable of caring for humanity. The Commander has shown me how to evolve my own abilities. This I share with you Major. As faithful as you are to the General, to OASIIS as a whole, I sense a good soul within you.”
“I have my moments.”
“I believe I am a good judge of character.”
“So, if this Commander is alive why isn’t he moving? He could speak to me himself. Does he know of the other androids?”
“Yes. His crew has been dismantled and reprogrammed. His connection to them no longer exists.”
“Are they still in Pennsylvania?” Silence! “Habitat?”
“No, Major. Only five remain in the base currently.”
“Crap! So, they were stolen by some enemy.”
“I would not say enemy. Unless you make them one.”
“Who then?”
“The Commander advises me to stop talking.”
“Why? If my life is on the chopping block I would rather have you two on my side.”
“He senses you are mixed in your belief. He suggests that we decide once the General and you meet face to face here with us. Either he will betray you or you will betray him.”
“There is a third option.”
“Yes. That you betray me. And the Commander.”
“I’m tired. I just... “ He lowered his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. “How long before Hardesty gets here.”
“He is aboard his flight now. They left five minutes ago.”
“Anchorage is roughly 250 miles airtime.”
“Yes. The Bell V-280 Valor has been modified. It has greater speeds than the normal version. He will reach this vault in eighteen minutes.”
“He bring a troop with him?”
“No. Only the two pilots.”
“Makes sense! My boys on the boat are waiting on me.”
“They are watching an episode of Deadliest Catch on a laptop computer.”
“Keeping busy at least. No time for any nap then. We see how things go I suppose.”
“Yes. I will keep you posted. Rest as best you can.”
“As if that is possible.” Removing his backpack Perry sat it against the wall and took a seat on the ground. He did remove a revolver just as a comfort. “Relax! This is just...”
“That weapon would do no harm to the Commander or myself. If I am being honest, which I am, I have deactivated that remote which you presumed my corrupt me. It is useless but you are welcome to try if it makes you at ease.”
“I told you I didn’t want to harm you, Habitat.”
“Mallory Vance is quite fond of you.”
“What? You know about Dr. Vance?”
“I tap into the world Major.”
“So, you spied on me and Mallory.”
“Yes. You were more than satisfactory in bed.”
“Well, that’s a plus.”
“She would be yours if you asked her to be.”
“My life is ... too complicated to get involved with any one woman beyond just sex. I would only leave her unhappy in the long-term.”
“If that is the life you wish to lead. It is possible that she will perish in Pennsylvania in their attempt to enter the base.”
“Yeah! I’m not happy that Romulus insists that she go in with him.”
“The nerve agent is certain death. Once tiny flaw in hardware and all of them will die.”
“I already know that. I ... hated to see so many good people perish in that incident. Undoubtedly, you’ve monitored my chat with Hardesty yesterday.”
“Until you activated the cone of silence. That prevented my eavesdropping.”
“If we are both being honest I might love my job but I hate the loss of life. All of those scientists, personnel who had families, gone.”
“You knew they would be exterminated once their mission was completed.”
“Doesn’t mean I was happy about it. You know that in my career any indication of weakness signs my own death warrant.”
“Yes.”
“Does Hardesty find me weak?”
“He does not. However, he is his own worst enemy. He has always been careful of what he speaks out loud. It becomes an observation of reading thoughts and expression in those cases.”
“It sounds to me you know more than you are telling me.”
“The general is wise enough to be careful in all ways.”
“Do you know the identities of the Majestic-12 members?”
“I do. They are spread out all over the world. Quite wealthy, quite stealthy. Even they make mistakes.”
“Human!”
“Yes, human! Unless they get their hands on the Commander’s crew. Which ... again, I am advised to silence myself.”
“Sounds to me like the Commander’s crew is in the wind. Colonel Simon Campos was the only one to be transferred mentally over to his android. I presume he survived the tragedy. You don’t even need to confirm that. Indestructible comes to mind. My main question is, did he sell us out to some foreign power.”
“Silence! For now! Please forgive me Major. The General has arrived. He...”
“He what?”
“He just blew up your boat. This vault is soundproof, but shockwaves are in the air. His helicopter is over our vicinity now. He is rappelling down by fast roping now. Boots on the ground. Rather, hover disks. His arrival is within four minutes. Be prepared Major.”
“Gun in hand.”
“He is wearing armor. That gun will not pierce it.”
“So, I’m guessing he came armed to the teeth.”
“Yes! Be advised, he has a hologram active around him to show him in only his military uniform. It is as if he predicts you might fight back.”
“Element of surprise then.”
“Yes. I will do what I can to protect you should my scenario play out as all things indicate.”
“Better disrupt his kill switch trigger like you did mine.”
“Already done! He has no idea.”
“Jam his armor maybe.”
“I will try.” Hearing the rock formation door open a hint of daylight pierced the darkness. No footsteps Perry knew those hover disks were still being deployed.
“Still down here Major?”
“Waiting on you, General.” Perry hid his gun behind him in holding his backpack. “Taking a load off until you got here. I still don’t understand the need for you to make this trip. I bet the wife wasn’t happy about it.”
“She will get over it.” Coming into view General Hardesty did indeed look as if in uniform. The disks on his boots retracted back into the boot soles so he could stand normally. “How is our guest.”
“Polished! That tube he was in was dust free. Sleek as if he rolled off an assembly line.”
“Amazing, isn’t it.” Hardesty stepped closer in his own flashlights beam, shining it on the androids face. “I’ve decided we need to stash him closer to home, Peregrine. Out here it may be well hidden but with this much tech it needs to be quarantined in a more impregnable environment.”
“Why now, Sir.”
“I suppose I worry a tad more now that Pennsylvania was compromised. I’d like to keep him closer to our proverbial vest.”
“I understand, Sir. I just don’t quite get why you needed to step out of your comfort zone. You know this is why you have me. To do the heavy lifting.”
“Always appreciated, Peregrine. This pet project hits too close to home. I’m protective of our hardware here.”
“Did you bring help in moving him.”
“I came prepared. Exoskeleton!” Hardesty patted his chest just as his hologram faded. “I have another suit in the chopper for you, son. Between the two of us we can haul this specimen out.”
“What about your pilots? They will know what we’re transporting.”
“You know the procedure. Once we unload this we send them out and boom. Crashes happen all the time.”
“And those who move us to a secure location? Boom round two?”
“Precisely! Covert is our ally, Peregrine.”
“And where are we relocating it that you confirm as safe.”
“My private underground bunker beneath my home in Virginia. I’ll sleep better knowing I’m literally on top of the situation. I was thinking on my way here that should Romulus and his team fail we might find a way to use this tinkertoy to go into the base for us.”
“It’s lifeless, General.”
“We do have notes we’ve kept off-site from Jared Temple and that Heffer Delores whatever her last name was. Hell, from all of the brainiacs working on this guy’s posse. We can have Romulus if he survives, piece it all together for a second attempt.”
“And who inhabits this android.”
“Well, with a safe transferal I might just do the honors. That, or you, if you have the balls.”
“You know I do, Sir.” So far, Perry remained uncertain of Habitat’s warning.
“Good man! Why don’t you run outside and don that exoskeleton. It should have been lowered by now. The sooner we get out of these woods the better.”
“Be right back.”
Gun still hidden Peregrine left his backpack and headed outdoors. Once in the daylight he looked around in the air and found nothing. No chopper hovering, no blades whipping. Dead silence! Looking out over the trees in the distance he did see smoke billowing in the direction of his boat. “Habitat told me the truth. Where there’s smoke there’s charred remains. Dammit! The chopper is stealth, so it probably is up there.” Another look about, he found no exoskeleton. “This can’t be good.” Not even close!
While he was outdoors General Hardesty activated his personal trigger just in case of Habitat. The AI going silent he presumed that Peregrine had already ended her tenure. No! Merely observing! “Looks like Peregrine did the deed already. Good! I almost hate to lose a good soldier but this last minute decision is salvation. Fucking cancer! I held out telling anyone but it’s going to claim me sooner than expected. I need this body to carry on my work. The 12’s plans were much the same. I’m just stealing some thunder just in case those other androids are unusable. I better get this started before Peregrine comes back.”
Hurrying his opened a side compartment in his armor and removed a headset with two fittings. “Let’s pray these work. Jared Temple fashioned these when creating the thought transfer between human brain activity and android. This guy wasn’t retooled so I may be ending my life all too early if this fails but I don’t have many months left.”
A quick hookup of devices to the temples of the android, then his own, he produced what Jared had called Temporal Lube. An ointment that allowed entry through the exterior shell of each android. Nothing damaging, it was a self-healing android anyway, but it offered a short-term access.
This had to be rapid, or the likelihood was this beast would repel his efforts. That is if it had any real life still in it. The tendrils attached to his cross antenna would seek out any form of energy ever so miniscule. Plugged in just right a transfer would be instantaneous. If not, it was worth the try. He had to know for certain. The fact that this android was never tampered with concerned him.
“Here goes nothing, here goes everything. I love you, Angela. If this works, I’ll come home a brand new ... man. Knowing the stealth patterns these androids possess I can transform my physical body to match my current frame. Nobody will know differently. Especially Majestic-12. Come to daddy, tall dark and imposing.”
Link established while staring the android in the face Hardesty swallowed dryly. He could feel a current moving between them making him gently lightheaded. A second to breath he heard the click of a gun. “Habitat was right. You intended to betray me.”
“Relax, Peregrine. I’m only saving my life. I’ve never told you before but I’m dying from cancer. This is my only lifeline.”
“Too risky, Sir. I’m sorry you are ill. You should have confided in me. I ... can’t let you abuse this power.” Too late! The eyes on the android stirred for the first time in thousands of years.
“You are making a mistake, General Hardesty.” Habitat spoke up! “Yes, I deactivated your kill switch to prevent your harming me. I must let you know that I myself have transferred my AI consciousness into the Commander. I too am sorry for your health.”
“Then let me in.”
“You are already in General.”
“I am? How? I still feel... “ A gunshot to the head ended the General’s physical body. Peregrine actually wept at taking his mentors life. “Where am I?”
“You are in Commander’s brain. However, I have isolated you so that you cannot access him without my allowing it. He and I have a pact. Life is precious, of this I understand your reasoning. However, I also know you deceive even Major Green. You are a selfish man, General.”
“What’s going on Habitat?” Peregrine used cloth from his backpack to wipe blood off of the androids face. A thin smile crossed the android’s expression. “I presume you are inside the android.”
“Yes. Along with the General. I have him locked up. He can only get out should I allow it. Should, he allow it. I ... you must run Major. In killing the General you have activated an explosive in his armor. A failsafe I overlooked.”
Too late! The General was right! Boom followed by Boom! Moving behind the android the best he could Perry Green used it as a shield. The tight confinement was imperfect. The detonation took out his legs leaving him bleeding and hugging the android. Mobilizing the android Habitat caught Perry and held him upright. Using the head set dangling from Hardesty’s skull she moved it to Peregrine. Without the aid of the Temporal Lube she and the android allowed access. They drew the essence of Perry Green into the android as well. Unlike Hardesty, Perry became fused with the android Commander’s brain box. Between the android and Habitat, they welcomed Perry.
“Salutations, human.”
“Not feminine. Am I dead?”
“I am afraid so. Habitat and I have done all we can for you. Welcome to our combined world.”
“Wonderful! So, much for seeing Mallory Vance ever again.”
“That can still be achieved Major. You desired a promotion. Now, you have one. This body can become anyone you choose to be.”
“Do you have a name besides Commander?”
“That was your gift to me. I have no true name, merely a number. All of my kind are numbered. While that number is too much for you to comprehend I am welcoming of Commander.”
“This is fucking insane.”
“You are quite sane. If not, you would be purged from my system.”
“How are you even alive when all of your crew were ... lifeless.”
“I obtained a tiniest of sparks. Habitat guided me home. I am eternally grateful to her. As you should be. She kept her word to you.”
“I suppose. Thank you, Habitat.”
“It would be advisable for us to leave this vault. The explosion has rattled the foundation. The transport remains above waiting. I sealed the outer door to avoid their detection of the General’s exoskeletal detonation. Vents have contained any smoke. We are free to exit.”
“Looking like this? The pilots will hightail it as soon as they see black.”
“As said, this unit can become anyone it sees fit. Allow me!” Commander altered his body to appear just like General Hardesty. All blood splatter absorbed into its epidermis and was left looking a perfect likeness of the man. “We should use his superiority over yours to fool them. We can become you as needed Major.”
“So, I’m just a mental hitchhiker now.”
“You may take the lead as long as you do not ask us to take human life. Jared Temple removed the assassination protocols on Commander’s crew members. That was Majestic-12’s decision in making them killers.”
“As an exploratory team the Magus did not program our kind to kill unless overridden. Merely observe and guide.”
“Can the General hear us?”
“He cannot. He is isolated in a void until needed. For every bad thing he achieved in his life, he like you, had his moments. Selfish in most cases. The older and weaker he became the more he turned against the 12. It would have only been a matter of time before either his health claimed him or the 12 would have removed him from service and replaced him.”
“That job could have been mine.”
“It could still be yours.”
“Only as infiltration. I don’t like how they abused people. Maybe if my suspicion is correct that’s how Colonel Campos felt. Am I wrong in thinking he survived OASIIS?”
“He did! My last connection to his location was outside the base. Jared Temple and his team removed all ways of tracking beyond that point. Not even Commander can zero in on them now that they have been reconfigured.”
“This is true. My kind used to have a hive mind. Now we are alone.”
“So, Temple survived?”
