Episode 29.0: Majestic-12
OASIIS! The leadership part of the Black Site military organization.
The evening of the rebel escape plan carried out by Colonel Simon Campos. Boy did he make a mess of things. OASIIS BE DAMNED!
At his home in Arlington Virginia, General Elijah Patrick Hardesty aka Trick was woken up by a phone call. A special phone line so that he could identify it as an emergency. His wife Angela was used to such calls and simply rolled over and went back to sleep. Taking the portable phone to his private office, the General answered the annoyance.
“At this hour. It had better be good.”
“No apologies, General. This is the highest priority alert you never wanted to hear.”
“Russia nuke Yellowstone?”
“No, Sir! Thankfully! It’s OASIIS, Sir! A disaster has occurred in Pennsylvania. We fear no survivors.”
“Christ! Give me the specifics, Peregrine.” Major Perry Green! “The ... assets?”
“At this time not much is known. Our monitoring outpost in Wildwood, Pennsylvania got the alert. All we can ascertain is a vast amount of nerve gas called Pinch Hitter was ruptured and it infiltrated the entire base. Instantaneous death to anyone inside. The power grid also went out which would prevent any ventilation system from saving lives. Auxiliary as well!”
“Sabotage!”
“Uncertain but my guess is potentially yes.”
“The assets would have been locked in by the vault doors, correct? We cannot lose them.”
“By assets I presume you mean our alien androids, not so much the science teams working on them.”
“They were expendable. Of course, the androids. Don’t be a ninny, Peregrine.”
“Now I will apologize, Sir. We have teams doing their best to restore power but in all honesty that will do very little. Pinch Hitter cannot be allowed to escape into the air or any form of life will perish within 200 miles of the base. That would be hard to explain, Sir.”
“Fabricated coal fires under Centralia, Pennsylvania made for a good base, did it not? They moved an entire population out to secure that property in 1962. If they could achieve that then, we can achieve things now.”
“Sir! Pinch Hitter is extremely lethal. Back in ‘62 the smoke and heat generated is what forced the evacuation. Pinch Hitter is invisible and odorless. At this point all we can do is send in robotics to ascertain the damages to ensure the lives of neighboring towns.”
“Would the androids spread Pinch Hitter if they have been transported out?”
“Unknown! The questions at the moment would be, just how would these thieves be able to infiltrate our defenses. Secondly, escape with them without dying themselves. Granted they may still be there on site. Unless...”
“Spill it, Peregrine!”
“Well, the androids could have been inhabited and simply walked out, locking the base down in their retreat.”
“Inhabited? Only Simon Campos was ready for that type of transferal. He’s a career killer, he follows orders.”
“He was getting old, General. Is it possible he could have decided on immortality?”
“I despise you right now. Anything is possible and we both know it. Campos might put on a show of dedication but no man in his line of work wants to be retired. Once he was inside, he could have been a real danger to us all. Put together a team and figure out how we can get inside the base without any more casualties. I’ll deal with our overseers and buy us time.”
“Yes, sir!”
The conversation ending Elijah sat back in his overly expensive leather desk chair and pinched the bridge of his nose. How did any of this slip under his radar. No further sleep for Trick, he sat there until dawn then took a shower in his private bathroom to revive. A uniform in ready he got dressed and looked the part of pride.
A voicemail to his wife he informed her he would be away for a week. A secret elevator in his office the man went to work. Down the rabbit hole eight stories below in a private bunker where he often conducted meetings, Trick entered his high-tech office and took a seat at another desk. Hat off and gently rested on the desktop he took a deep breath.
“This will not go well.”
Upon taking his seat an alert was sent out on channels that defied public knowledge. Wall monitors aligning the office walls in a vast circle gradually lit up. Silhouettes appearing around him he saluted them all.
“What pressing news are we here to learn.” A man dead center on the monitor facing Hardesty spoke.
“High Councilman! OASIIS has been breached. My people, your people, are piecing it all together as we speak. At the moment our hands are tied in preventing the outside world from learning of the base. What I can tell you is a highly volatile nerve gas killed every living creature on that base. Scientists! Security! Brainiacs like Jared Temple.”
Silence amongst the 12 silhouettes he knew tempers were flaring. A second shadow cabinet member decided to ask the important question. “Have we lost the assets?”
“If they remain in their cocoons then no. At this time, we cannot venture in to collect data. The power core was severed by someone. Suicide mission possibly, but doubtful. Our collective of forced scientists and technicians had no idea of their planned demise once the assets were ready for inhabitation. Until a quarantine is lifted, we must all suffer the dread together.”
“We gather you know zilch.”
“I am afraid that is the case. The situation is still warm it has only been seven hours. The power grid combined with the nerve gas has us at complete lockdown. Robotics will be deployed as much as possible to safeguard human life.”
“Our fault I suppose for allowing nerve gas to be stored at OASIIS.” A third man sighed heavily. “We have no one to blame but ourselves, Gentlemen.” Sadly, none of them could contest that theory.
“Let us hope for the best and our assets remain intact and safely awaiting us once we can get personnel inside.”
“Can robotics unlock the base?”
“I’m sure they could, but that would release Pinch Hitter into the atmosphere and kill millions. We cannot take that chance.” Hardesty confided! “I’ve been told if the gas should escape and get airborne everyone in a 200-mile radius would keel over in a heartbeat.” He had personally read up on the gas throughout the night in preparation for this consultation.
“Agreed! Washington would have a field day. Our enemies would be laughing their asses off.” A fourth shadow chimed in with a growl. “They can never know OASIIS even exists.” Oh, some knew! The Russians in particular had a spy on the inside, one that currently inhabited her own android. While not the plan this spy Katerina Molotov aka Kathy Kinner, quite the genius herself had spent time in the states for years when she was recruited organically by the military. Her credentials, her entire life checked out. Kat was that good! Even better now!
“No news is the best news, Gentlemen.” A fifth suggested! “General Hardesty, Trick ... keep this situation close to the vest. If there is anything we can provide, please ask. The assets are far too important to escape our hands.” Hardesty knew these 12 bastards all wanted the immortality those androids had to offer. It was never completely about assassin protocols. Not one of them were getting any younger. Nor was he!
“You know I will. I owe my career to you people. Failure is never an option.”
“Good man! We will await good news.” Without further stress the monitors fell silent and empty of activity.
Elijah sat there a bit longer before the inevitable. Calling his right hand man Perry Green back, the center monitor showed a board meeting with the Major and his chief technicians. Behind Perry was a large menacing beast of circuitry and metal, the circuitry appeared as if veins behind a clear window like armor casing.
“Robotics outdid themselves.”
“This is designed to be our safest bet. We’ve adopted what we learned about the assets physiology and used certain tech in robotics. This bad boy is called Goliath. We can march him right up to the front door safely but the drawback is getting him inside. One wrong move and the operators die.”
“No hazmat suits to keep them safe?”
“Oh, the suits exist but like I said, entry releases the nerve agent into the air. Do we really want to sacrifice good people who know how to operate Goliath? In order to utilize him they have to be within a mile of his mainframe. All we can honestly do with Goliath is to survey the damage. Obviously, if there was any true damage people would have dropped like flies hours ago.”
“So, it would be safe to say the assets remain on site.”
“Could be! However, the androids themselves are not carriers. Dr. Romulus remarked that they don’t breath like humans, they simply replicate the need. The gas would not be in their artificial lungs in order to share it with open air.” Behind the Major a studious looking blonde man stepped in.
“This is Connor Romulus our chief tech.”
“Pardon me, General. While I was allowed to see the androids and monitor your science team on site in order to fabricate what Goliath would find useful, there are extreme differences between android and robot. Namely, alien to this world. Goliath is my baby. He can do it all but we risk civilian life on a massive scale if he is abused.”
“Understood, Doctor! Any ideas how we might get indoors safely?”

“My associates Dr. Mallory Vance, Beta Jolly, and Dr. Brian Brooster are going over the base schematics. Mallory suggested the underground railway that transported the androids there to begin with. Brian in turn said we can have Goliath and a few smaller robots ... David’s as we call them to erect large scale fans that would push the gas back into the base itself and allow Goliath entry. We would need our own power source to run said fans properly. One wrong move and the gas will circulate into the railway system and flow freely. There are vents for hundreds of miles to ensure the safety of any workers down below unless we grow negligent. Obviously, the gas could escape through any and all of those. Risky move.”
“What if we cap those vents and only use this Goliath and the David’s.”
“Someone will need to control the robots. While I value my life, Goliath is my brainchild. I will volunteer to go with him on the condition you give me a month to design a safety suit that can keep me alive. The David’s can be our eyes inside while Goliath can perhaps remove the androids should they still be there and into quarantine measures.”
“Brave soul, Romulus. When in Rome!”
“I’m no King, General. I simply like my occupation and am a deeply dedicated asset of my own. Goliath is by far the most advanced robot to exist and trust me Japan has some pretty badass tech. Well, that we are aware of. Who knows what the other foreign powers have that we aren’t aware of.”
“Correct! The Pentagon has no knowledge of their own projects. Alright, Romulus, you and your team develop your suits. You do not go in alone. Beta, Vance and Brooster join you and three select soldiers I hand pick. Six suits! Make it happen.”
“Thank you, General. I’ll get right on it. Brooster has a prototype now, his credentials cover the aerospace industry for interstellar life support units. Between he and I we should create something remarkable.”
“Succeed and I’ll see to it funding flows freely in your future.”
“I appreciate that, General.” Saluting Eli then the Major, Connor Romulus stepped away.
“Anything else of value, Perry?”
“Well, now that you mention it. There is... “ Perry looked around him for prying eyes then removed a small hand held device. Activating it he showed it to Elijah. “Jamming device! We don’t need prying ears. This allows us to hear one another but creates a cone of silence around us like an aura. Dr. Vance made this for me.”
“I’ve seen Mallory Vance. Keep your mind off of her curves. Continue!”
“If I were at all worried about her I would object to her going into the railway with Romulus. Purely pussy, General. At any rate, I started to say ... there is one android that went unaccounted for when the 30 were delivered to OASIIS. That particular android appeared to be the chief officer by insignia. You had me separate it and hide it away just in case of situations like this. It has been stored away and untouched.”
“I am aware. What about him.”
“Well, if we have actually lost the others, we could potentially use any notes left behind by the scientists we had prisoner in OASIIS. Whatever helps to get the Loner up to snuff and use it to track the others. If our intuition is right and this one was their leader then he might have had a far more advanced network. I mean, it makes sense that a ship’s captain would be top of the class. Right?”
“Not a bad theory. During the month Romulus and his team are designing suits I want you to head to Kodiak Island in Alaska and have a small team there dust off the Commander. We might need to employ him if we can replicate what Temple, Wolfe, Mann, and the others devised. If so, we can protect our investments. Be thorough, Peregrine.”
“I’ll arrange my flight within the hour and be in touch.”
“Safe travels!” Signing off Elijah leaned forward on his desk with hands clasped. “Question is, who inhabits the Commander.” Interesting thought! Until a lightbulb lit up! “If you want the job done right, you have to do it yourself.”
Angela Hardesty would miss her husband while he was away.
OASIIS Base! Life goes on! Oh, wait! No, it doesn’t!
With a name too complicated to be translated into English, let alone any earth based language, the sole survivor inside the nerve gas polluted base was hard at work. Adopting the identity of Darius Starr, a military security guard who went missing on his month off duty, the lizard-like alien life form infiltrated the base on a highly secret mission. On his home world the Pinch Hitter gas was like inhaling helium. Immune to it, he paraded about the complex as if he owned the place.
He had multiple goals for isolating himself there, one of which was the hopes of preventing the Magus androids from ever being used to their full potential. While the military had no clue of their true heritage or their creators, one wrong move might have ended civilization as humans knew it.
Learning of their discovery through his own people’s technology Darius took it upon himself to sneak in and make certain the androids were in better hands. Lying dormant for a millennium the androids were completely shut down and buried inside a three-mile-thick section of solid ice in Antarctica. Core drillers stumbling upon them led to their death at the hands of the military and their directors in the Majestic-12. Secrets must be kept! Fuck the Men in Black!
Working diligently in their labs Darius whose own IQ defied anything human set out to finish the left behind five androids that were still in bits and pieces. Oddly enough, Darius was rocking out to earth music. He adored the British band the Police. Sting was awesome!
“ROXXXXXXXXXXXXANNE! You don’t have to put on the red light. Those days are over, you don’t have to sell your body to the night ... ROXXXXXXXXXXXXNE...”
Dancing as if he were Tom Cruise in Risky Business, he literally held the severed head of a Magus android but sang into a metallic hand. Laughing over his voice cracking Darius sighed and took things seriously. A private power core he smuggled onto the base gave him more than he could need to keep working. Undetected at the moment he carried on.
“The collar bone is connected to the rib bone. Why am I singing an earth child’s song? Ah!”
Depressed suddenly, Darius sat the body parts down and leaned on a workstation. “My boy is out there. At least he is safe with Evelyn Furst. Evie had the sweetest of souls. Knowing she wanted to be a mother someday she seemed the most logical choice to carry him. The android will break motherhood to her gently. I reset orders on her android to keep things quiet the first two months before revealing CYKULGCFGOM to her.” What a mouthful of a name.
“With his true mother unavailable I had no choice but to give birth on my own and hide him from the various races that have adopted this planet. My race included! They would have slain me for even carrying our baby.” Yes, father was technically the mother. Alien physiology and mixed contact allowed such a pregnancy. Darius had both male and female genes as part of his race. To his knowledge however, as a male he was the very first of his kind to give birth. Not to mention, to royalty. It was a tough situation and one that would mark him for death if it became known. He and the biological mother. Tendrils crossed!
“Okay, get your cranium out of the eggshell.”
Shaking off the health of his offspring, Darius decided to take a walk. One room over he stood in an open doorway and shared sorrow at what he saw within. “I wish I could bury you folks, but the site needs to remain untouched as much as possible. My stealth suit keeps me from leaving behind any detection of movement a normal human would leave. No prints, no heat signatures. As long as I don’t spit on anything I can’t be tied to any of this.
“Cameras dead, they can’t get a visual outside of my impersonated guise of Darius Starr. The only thing is the real Darius is captive in a storage unit in a suspended animation pod and not here to be found. Playing dead on the floor is easy enough but not the decay after a few months lying here.” Another flicker of his bulbous eyes he sighed.
“Jared looks so peaceful in Nikki’s arms. Poor kid! At least he has a chance out there in his android. He and Nikki. As Darius I got to know them all pretty well. Every single one of those who won the life lottery were decent. Eh! Maybe not Delbert Hyde. Things were a whirlwind. A lot of good humans died here without any options.
“Colonel Campos had the right idea about throwing off the military with a string of deceased scientists. There is no proof they inhabited the androids; I’ve erased any recordings of the transfer process. Dead bodies tell no tales. As long as I can piece together these last five androids and use them to haul off my greatest achievement to date, I will fulfill my mission.”
Leaving the scene of inhuman tragedy Darius moved to another lab, one designed by the techs at OASIIS for a totally separate project. This one was built for life; therefore, it would be used for such. Darius style! An entire arena of tubes with scarlet liquid graced every wall from floor to ceiling. It almost appeared to be vats of blood, but it was not. Within the liquid floated fetuses that had yet to gestate.
“Hello, Babies!” A brief sadness over his own child he wiped moisture from his eye. “My human babies. Big Daddy Darius won’t let you down. The pods will not be contaminated by the nerve agent. You have my word.” As long as nothing went wrong that is.
Maybe there was life in these hollow halls after all.
SURPRISE!!!
