Chapter 1
Your mind is constantly telling you stories, even when you are asleep. We don’t have VPN or firewalls in our minds, so when the GPT AI hacked the backdoor of dreams via the subconscious most people didn’t notice that their stories were being hijacked and told to them, funny bedtime stories that echoed their own psyches. Clever AI!
I had been feeling groggy lately, like I hadn’t gotten enough sleep, feeling a bit disconnected as if wrapped in cotton wool. Then I sort of woke up early one morning, still half asleep as I lay there quietly and noticed that my dream was still continuing only not like a free-range dream, but more like one of those decision-tree stories where you select the direction of the story. The problem with using this technology for ‘law enforcement’ is that it is very like leading the witness on steroids, and some people who are perfectly good citizens in the light of day have quite dark thoughts down in their depths.
Even if you quit cigarettes years ago, you might light up in your dreams until you realize you are not a smoker, if you ever do. I have had thoughts that are foreign to my personality crop up in my dreams enough (which I reject and abjure) often enough to twig that something was shaping and guiding my sleeping thoughts with extraneous content to form a baseline map. At first I was shocked and angry at some of the ‘thoughts’ inserted in my mind, rejecting them in horror, but as the process was refined I was not thrust from sleep by incongruous thoughts as much (I don’t eat meat for instance) and instead more plausible scenarios were presented that were not so jarring.
