A gentle breeze blew along the Jackson’s Creek Valley.
It had been a warm Autumn day – an ‘Indian Summer’ afternoon in No. 4 Division, or so it had seemed.
But, it was now a little after eleven o’clock. And, the temperature still an uncomfortable thirty degrees Celsius. For the most part, the evening had been busy. Rostered with the newly-confirmed Constable Deirdre ‘Dash’ McKinley and ‘Probationary’ Constable Kelly O’Rourke, Senior Constable Maggie Doyle had acted as ‘Sergeant’ at Sunbury. Constable Joanna Parrish was Watchousekeeper.
And, both ‘Trainee’ Constable Susie Raynor and Sergeant Tess Gallagher had started their Nightshift.
There had been two serious collisions. Maggie had handled the crash on the Calder Highway, whilst Senior Constable Ben Stewart and Constable Evan Jones had taken care of the accident on the Sunbury - Bulla Road. However, it was now quiet. Surprisingly so.
‘Acting’ Inspector Monica Draper was back in her office. And so, Maggie and her two younger colleagues, had delayed returning to the Sunbury Police Station until Joanna confirmed ‘The Black Widow’ had left for the night - parking their Holden ‘Commodore’ police car by the ford over Jackson’s Creek, they were content to enjoy the cooling breeze for the time being. There was little traffic along Settlement Road, and at this late hour, they’d not seen another car pass them by.
Senior Constable Nick Schultz and Constable Adam Cooper were working the Nightshift ‘Divisional Van’ but they’d been called to a ‘Domestic’ in Gisborne, so would not be back in Sunbury for some time. Sitting on the grassy verge, Maggie was barefoot. She’d knotted her uniform shirt about her waist and rolled up her dark-blue uniform pants after removing her socks and boots. Margaret Ann Doyle had both feet in the water.
Beside her, Deirdre Elaine McKinley stood – the nineteen year old brunette’s uniform shirt also knotted ‘halter style’ about her waist as she gazed up the valley towards the Macedon Ranges in silence. And like Maggie, she’d rolled her uniform pants up and removed her socks and boots as well. They had a bottle of Johnny Walker ‘Red Label’ – the two girlfriends taking it in turns to savour the Scotch together. It was silent. Almost deafeningly quiet for neither Maggie, ‘Dash’ nor Kelly chose to spoil the moment with idle talk. For all three policewomen, it had been a long day on the Afternoon Shift.
With her young girlfriend’s right hand resting on her left shoulder, Maggie gazed at Kelly in silence.
Kelly Maree O’Rourke lay in the water – the twenty-two year old blonde still wearing her uniform shirt as she bathed in Jackson’s Creek. She’d left her uniform pants on the bonnet of their police car. And, the twenty-two year old blonde had left her socks and boots with those of Maggie and ‘Dash’ as well...
“I suppose,” the young blonde suggested, “We should be getting back soon, don’t you think?”
Maggie shrugged in response – Constable Joanna Parrish had promised to call when ‘The Black Widow’ had left the Sunbury Police Station,
“We’ve not ben told anything yet, Kelly?” Deirdre reminded the young blonde policewoman,
“Damn...?”
Kelly stood up – her uniform shirt sopping wet,
“Looks like,” she announced, “We have company?”
Maggie turned – ‘Dash’ hesitated...
“What’s this...?” Kelly wondered – she stepped up onto the grassy verge with the other two policewomen and pointed,
“Maybe, they’d lost huh...?”
‘Dash’ turned – along with Maggie she now saw what Kelly was pointing at,
“They’re a long way from anywhere, aren’t they?” observed Kelly – she began to run her fingers over the wet fabric of her tight-fitting translucent policewoman’s uniform shirt...
“I wonder who they are...?” Wondered ‘Dash’ – there were two young women walking slowly towards the three policewoman along Settlement Road,
“Maybe, they’re from the ‘Party’ in Clarkefield?”
There had been a report of a ‘Party’ earlier...
“Could be...?” was Maggie’s response – she stood up.
“I don’t suppose,” she then asked Kelly, “You have a dry shirt with you?”
“N-No...”
Kelly continued to tidy her sopping wet uniform shirt as she spoke,
“Who would’ve thought, Maggie?”
“They must be lost...?” Suggested ‘Dash’ – Kelly knotted her wet shirt ‘halter style’ like that of Maggie and ‘Dash’...
“Well, they’re in for a bit of surprise, aren’t they?” the older blonde policewoman replied,
“I don’t think that they have seen us yet, it seems...?”
“I doubt...” added Kelly – she tightened her knotted policewoman’s shirt carefully,
“They could see that we’re policewomen in the dark, Maggie, don’t you think...?”
Back at the darkened Sunbury Police Station, Constable Joanna Parrish sat in the Watchousekeeper’s Office – she’d been too busy with her paperwork to notice the ‘Divisional Inspector’ standing silently in the open doorway off to the side. There had been several Complaints lodged at the front counter, and Joanna Louise Parrish was checking that her reports would meet Sergeant Tess Gallagher’s exacting standards. The twenty-five year old had all but forgotten about ‘The Black Widow’...
“M-Ma’am...?” she gasped with a start.
‘Acting’ Inspector Monica stepped into the room,
“I’m sorry, but I didn’t see you there, ma’am...?”
The older policewoman said nothing – she just walked over to where Joanna sat.
Running her fingers lightly over the young brunette policewoman’s shoulder. Monica positioned herself beside Joanna,
“M-Monica...?”
There was a moment of silence.
Resting her hand on Joanna’s shoulder, Monica licked at her lips – a moment later, she began to toy with the collar of Joanna’s uniform shirt, savouring the alluring scent of the brunette’s perfume.
“What am I to do with, Joanna?”
Opening her mouth to respond, Joanna found herself unable to speak...
“I wonder,” continued Monica menacingly, “If I should have you dismissed from the Victoria Police?”
“M-Ma’am...?” Joanna protested – she tried to stand but Monica held her down in her seat,
“What would Chief Commissioner Nixon say, Constable Parrish?” Monica wondered,
“Senior Sergeant O’Donoghue too...?” she then asked Joanna,
“Though I suspect that Tess Gallagher is a part of this, isn’t she, Joanna?”
“M-Ma’am...?” repeated the young brunette policewoman – she did nothing to stop her ‘Divisional Inspector’ as Monica slid her hand down beneath Joanna’s uniform shirt, tearing it open,
“As I do Maggie Doyle and the rest of the ‘sluts’ you work with?” whispered Monica with a sneer...
