Chapter 18
Adrian Castle’s smile slipped altogether at her words. “Excuse me?”
Jillian dragged a hand through her strawberry curls and wondered how she was going to get out of this one. She’d heard about Adrian Castle but not much. As second in command to Barry Stallworth, he carried as much power and sway as the billionaire tech mogul. It was possible the man had a check for a hundred grand in his pocket now.
“Nothing,” she said trying to think quickly. “I’m just a bit out of kilter. So many reporters and everything.”
Adrian grinned, again. “Well, it’s something that you will have to get used to C. A. D. I. is going to go down in history very soon. Horizon Bionix will definitely want to be the name behind it.”
“Is that so?” She folded her arms over chest and shifted from one foot to the other.
“Definitely. We are the best in the industry because we keep our fingers in ventures that prove to be both world-changing and profitable. You had to know that. Isn’t that which is why you brought her to VEX? C. A. D. I. has a lot of applications I know we can implement.”
He leaned forward until his cologne reached her nose. It was a nice scent, but it unnerved her in a strange unfathomable way. “I got to admit; if we didn’t know she was an android, I would probably have asked her for a date.”
Jillian smiled as expected at the neat joke. Her mind churned at such a notion. How would C. A. D. I. respond to the complexities of human romantic relationships? They were a dynamic of their own. Scientists, creatives, and mental specialists had tried to quantify it but to no avail. Relationships in the general sense were hard to understand. Much more so, relationships of the heart.
There was so much about C. A. D. I. that she and Jack just didn’t know.
“Do you think you could program her to say ‘yes’?” This was spoken with another grin but Jillian sensed a serious tone underlying it.
Jillian pursed her lips. “That’s the thing, Mr. Castle. Programming places restrictions on C. A. D. I. That’s the last thing we want.”
Adrian’s eyes lifted up in mild shock. “Surely you aren’t saying there aren’t any protocols obstructing C. A. D. I.?”
Did she say too much? Sarah’s image chose that moment to rise up in her mind.
You’re no help Sarah.
“Jillian, who’s this?”
Her legs were weak with relief as she hurriedly introduced Jackson. “This is Adrian Castle, second in command to Barry Stallworth of Horizon Bionix.”
Jackson’s silvery head nodded. “Glad to meet you.”
