As she entered the final months of her pregnancy, because of a mix-up at the busy clinic, Emma found herself sharing an exam room with Kaitlin, also in her final months. Kaitlin was shy at first, but Emma’s smile and her gentle questions about Kaitlin’s experiences with her pregnancy softened the girl’s reserve.
“Was that a kick?” Emma asked.
Kaitlin nodded. “She kicks like a girl. Well, she is a girl, and she kicks really hard, like she’s had some kind of self-defense training. Or like she hates me already. Maybe a boy would be more considerate. More gentlemanly.”
“But don’t you love the kicks?”
“Oh yeah, I do,” Kaitlin admitted. “I find myself looking forward to them. What about you?”
