Chapter 1
Sue---My name is Sue Simmons. I am an only child and I had a great childhood. My daddy was a cop, his father was a cop before him. I grew up wanting to be a cop.
I graduated high school and joined the Marine Corps. After a three year tour as an M.P. I got out and decided to go to college and get a 2 year degree in Law Enforcement. That’s where I first met Robert. Well maybe “met” is not the right word. I saw him around campus. He was older than me and working on a PH.D in computers or something. Everybody knew him as the “genius”. He talked to no one and really was only interested in his studies. So I guess you could say I knew who he was.
Back to me. I applied and was accepted into the police academy. I placed high up in my class and was soon on my training runs with a partner. Everything was going well. Because of my family history I was well accepted by the other police officers. Life was great.
I had just completed my second year on the force when it happened. While I was on patrol in downtown I got the call, “Robbery in progress, shots fired!” When I heard that it was at the 1st National Bank I radioed back that I was near and was told to respond.
I rolled up and jumped out of the car just as three masked men exited the bank. I drew my pistol and I ordered them to stop. Yeah right. All that did was give them time to turn and start firing at me. Bad idea. I was behind the door of my patrol car, it’s bulletproof, and I am a pistol expert, the best in my class. In less than five seconds all three were on the ground! As I walked up the only one who was still alive he raised his pistol.
“Don’t do it,” I screamed.
As he pointed the pistol at me I put one in his mouth!
You think I would be hailed a hero. Woman cop stops three bank robbers! Give her a medal. Maybe promote her. Well that ain’t what happened.
My Sgt. arrived and took my pistol. Inside the bank were two dead employees. The manager and his assistant who had went to his aide when he was shot. One of the bandits had hit her so hard on the head with his weapon that she died!
Of course there were cell phone videos. There always are. I was put on administrative paid leave while “my shooting” was investigated! My shooting?! I was being shot at! But there were protests and stores were burned. I was labeled a racist and a “rogue” cop. Talking heads were on the national news saying how I had “assassinated” three youths. All “good” boys who were just trying to get money to help their families. What the fuck is wrong with people these days? It seems that I should have identified myself as a police officer. Hey, they shot at a uniformed police officer who had just exited her patrol car. The “experts” said I should have given them the chance to surrender before I opened fire. They shot at me first! I was eventually cleared of any wrong doing but I did not want to be a cop any more. The day before I was to return to work I had a visitor.
