Chapter 68

Six White Boomers

So here we are, in December. We survived Thanksgiving and the black Friday sales. It also marks a time where a lot of radio stations will play Holiday Music. You all know them and sing along, as you are “Rockin’ around the Christmas tree” while dreaming of a “White Christmas.” Sweetie and I were in the car, running errands, and we found ourselves singing about Rudolph. After the song ended, she turned the radio off and sighed.

“I never hear my favorite Christmas song from back home, here.” When asked what it was, she replied “Six White Boomers!” Six what? “White Boomers are a special, large, male kangaroo that help pull Santa’s sleigh across the hot Australian sky.” (Remember, in the Southern Hemisphere, it is SUMMER while up here in the Northern Hemisphere, it is winter.) “They are called ‘boomers’ because of the sound their treads (large feet) make when they run/hop and bounce like a boomerang!”

The song tells the story of how a young Joey (youth kangaroo) is separated from his mother on Christmas day and Santa helps the little fellow find her. Sweetie told me that she has unsure just who wrote the song, but it had been around for a long time. (Research indicates a Rolf Harris released the song in 2003.)

So, I managed to find the lyrics to this adorable song, and it’s easy for you to do a YouTube search to watch and sing along!

In Australia, Christmas comes in the middle of a very hot summer
So when Santa Claus delivers his presents
He’s not taken ‘round by reindeer because
They can’t stand the terrible heat
He’s taken ‘round by six big, white, old man kangaroos
Called the Six White Boomers

Early on, one Christmas day
A joey kangaroo
Was far from home and lost
In a great, big zoo
Mummy, where’s my mummy?
They’ve taken her away
We’ll help you find your mummy, son
Hop up on the sleigh

So up inside the bag of toys, little joey hopped
But they hadn’t gone far when Santa stopped
Unharnessed all the reindeer and joey wondered why
Then he heard a far off booming in the sky
(Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom)

Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun
Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
On his Australian run

Pretty soon, old Santa began to feel the heat
Took his fur-lined boots off to cool his feet
Into one, popped joey, feelin’ quite okay
While those old man kangaroos kept pullin’ on the sleigh, hey!
Then joey said to Santa, “Santa, what about the toys?
Aren’t you giving some to these girls and boys?”
“Well, they’ve all had their presents, sonny, we were here last night
This trip is an extra trip, Joey’s special flight”

Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun
Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
On his Australian run

Soon the sleigh was flashing past, right over Marble Bar
“Slow down there,” cried Santa, “It can’t be far”
Hop up on my lap here, son, and have a look around”
“There, there she is! That’s mommy! bounding up and down!”

Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun
Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
On his Australian run

Well, that’s the bestest Christmas treat that joey ever had
Curled up in mother’s pouch feeling snug and glad
The last they saw was Santa heading northwards from the sun
The only year the boomers worked a double run

Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun
Six white boomers
Snow white boomers
On his Australian run
(Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom)

Message from Sweetie;
If anyone has a favorite Holiday Song that is not usually heard on American radio, please share!
I will encourage Daddy (OGD) to post anything sent to him.
“G’day and Merry Christmas, Mate!”
