Chapter 20
Baseball Trivia of another sort.
Did you know that Busch Beer was created as a “thumbing of the nose” to Major League Baseball? Saint Louis Cardinals owner: August Busch Jr. wanted to change the name of Sportsman Park to Budweiser Stadium.
However, the League was not thrilled with the idea of a stadium being named after a beer. So, Busch changed the name to Busch Stadium, and people thought it was because of the family name.
Shortly after that? The brewery “just so happened” to introduce Busch Bavarian Beer to fans, in 1955.
So, instead of naming the ballpark after a beer, the beer was named after the ballpark.
Needless to say, League Officials were not thrilled at this, but they had little, if any, recourse on the matter.
