I woke up on Tuesday morning in an empty bed. I got dressed. Sue was not in the kitchen. The kettle was hot. Sue was in the office; she was sitting looking into space.
“Are you okay, Sue?” I asked.
It was obvious she had been crying; her face was red and puffy. She stood up.
“Yes ... Oh Zak, I am being stupid!”, she smiled, “I just get the feeling that when you leave next week, I might not see you again!”
I reached out for her, and I held her in my arms as she sobbed into my shoulder. We must have stood like that for ten minutes or so before Sue pushed me away.
“I am being stupid; we always knew that this would never last forever!” she said as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Would it make it easier if I left today?” I asked.
Sue punched me playfully.
“No, not at all!” She said and kissed me gently on the lips.
We went into the kitchen; I put the kettle on, and Sue got a bag of oats from the cupboard.
“Porridge?” she asked, waving the bag at me.
“Sounds good to me!” I replied.
We had porridge and coffee, and then I made some toast.
We talked about our futures, about the stables, and about life.
After another pot of coffee, Sue went for a shower, and I washed up. Then I had a shower. Then we got the job list out and worked out what needs to be done next.
The fence around one of the paddocks was in bad shape. We went and got a tape measure and headed down to the paddock. Sue took her notebook and a pencil.
We worked out how many planks we would need to repair the entire paddock. We also needed paint and screws. We walked up to the shop, and Emily was serving a lady who had horses at another stable but used the shop for her food and stuff. I helped her load the bags of feed into the back of her car.
After helping Emily to fill the drinks fridge, Sue and I went to the tool shed and made a list of bits and pieces we needed.
Sue walked over to the house to get her handbag and car keys. We drove into town, and our first stop was the bank. Sue always liked to get any cheques she had been paid with into the bank as soon as possible. We went to the hardware store. They said they would deliver the timber over to us the following day, along with the other bits and bobs we needed. Our next stop was the supermarket. I pushed the trolley as Sue filled it. Once the shopping was packed and paid for, we put it in the back of the four-by-four.
“Shall we have lunch in town?” Sue asked as she locked the truck.
“Yes, that sounds nice!” I replied.
There was a tearoom in the town square. It was only half full when we got there, and the waitress found us a table in the window.
We ordered a pot of tea, I had a tuna sandwich, and Sue had salmon and cream cheese. We took our time and enjoyed a bit of people watching. We ordered another pot of tea and a tray of cream cakes.
We had just got back in the car when the heavens opened, and we drove back in the rain.
The stables looked deserted when we got back. I was glad to see the stable yard was clear of puddles. The rain was still hammering down. There would be no outdoor work done today, which was obvious.
I helped Sue take the shopping indoors and store it away. She told me she was going to spend the afternoon catching up on her paperwork. I said I would make a coffee and then go and tidy up the tool shed.
I made coffee and took Sue’s into the office. Then I took one across for Emily. The shop was empty, so I drank mine with her as we chatted about this, that, and nothing at all.
I spent the rest of the afternoon in the toolshed. I tidied up and then did some maintenance on the machines.
When that was done, I had a wander around to check that the stables were shipshape and Bristol fashion. The rain was still hammering down. I went up to the shop, and Emily was just about to lock up. I waved her goodbye and took the takings over to the shop.
When I got into the house, I could smell cooking. Sue was in the kitchen.
“Hey, you!” she smiled.
“Hi Sue, that rain is getting worse!” I said as I washed my hands.
“Did you want a shower before we eat?” she asked.
“That sounds like a good plan!” I replied.
I headed up to the bedroom and stripped off, then I had a shave and a shower. By the time I had dried off and got dressed in some clean clothes, a storm had rolled over the stables. Thunder crashed over the buildings, and lightning lit up the sky.
Sue had cooked a shepherd’s pie and veggies. We ate in the kitchen; the radio was on.
We talked about the weather, Sue’s trip the following day, and the jobs that I could do on my own. Sue was really excited about the trip and the show.
We had just finished the washing up when the lights went out.
“Shit, looks like the power has gone down!” Sue said.
“What can we do?” I asked.
“Let’s give it half an hour and then see what’s what!” Sue said.
