I pulled on my work boots, grabbed the keys for the tool shed, and headed out into the sun. I had the list of jobs in my hand, and once I was in the shed, I got the gear I needed for the first few jobs. Sue had written the job name and the stable number next to it.

The first three jobs were all sticky locks; they got clogged up with dust and horsehair. It took just a few minutes to remove the lock, take it apart, clean it out, and, after a spray with WD-40, put it back together and put it back on the door.

The first two stables were open and empty. The third was occupied by two big horses. I was still unsure about horses, to be honest. There was a lady brushing one of the horses. I introduced myself, and she told me her name was Kay.

She chatted about the weather as I sorted out her lock. Kay asked me if I was going to sort out her rattling ladder and the broken window latch. It took me a few minutes to sort out the ladder. Some of the screws had come loose. Once that was done, I climbed up the ladder. The window latch was knackered. I went back to the tool shed and hunted around for a new window latch. There was only one left in the box. I searched for a notepad and a pencil and made a list of times that we needed from the hardware shop.

I knew we needed some taps, window latches, and WD-40. We were also running short of the screws we used for the stalls and ladders. I had a good look around, and once I had finished the list, I jogged over to the house. Sue was just leaving. She took the note and said she would see me for lunch.

I went back and replaced the latch on Kay’s window. The rest of the morning was filled with little jobs. I was able to do them all, except for one window that was cracked; we would need to order some glass.

As I wandered from job to job, I saw some familiar faces, Gemma Farnsworth for one, who was with her sister Jenny. We exchanged waves, and then I saw a guy walk out of her stable block. He looked over at me and then turned to Gemma. They were talking, but I had no idea what was being said. He didn’t seem to be a happy bunny.

I guess he was her boyfriend. I got on with my jobs and put the idea of some more fun and games with her as out of the question. I saw Sue drive into the yard and park by the tool shed. I went to help her unload a few boxes.

“How are things?” she asked.

“Yes, all good, we need to order some glass, but I have made a good start on the list of jobs!” I told her.

“That’s great news, I don’t know what I would do without you!” she smiled.

There were some grocery bags, so I carried them to the farmhouse. We put the groceries away as Sue told me about her trip into town.

Sue got changed as I buttered some crust rolls and sliced cheese and onion to put on them. Then I boiled the kettle and made a pot of tea.

We ate in the garden as the sun was high in the sky and the wind was light. Sue told me about the trip into town.

She also told me that the shop was doing really well. She was thinking about expanding it as she was always being asked to stock more and more stuff. She glanced at her watch.

“Right, I have a lesson this afternoon, I’d better get going”, she smiled.

“Okay, I will tidy up and get back to my chores!” I said and smiled at her.

I took the kit from the hardware store to the tool shed, then sorted out Mrs. Timms’ tap.

The next job on the list was grass cutting. I went and got the rotary lawn mower out of the shed. I gave it a once-over and filled the fuel tank before wheeling it down to the gates that led into the stables.

I worked my way over the grass verges. I picked up any litter or anything that could damage the blades before firing up the mower and cutting the grass.

I knew I would have to tidy up the edges and around the signs with the strimmer, but by then it was looking so much better. I emptied the grass collector before moving onto the next job. I tried to work away from where there were horses, as I knew the noise would not be good for them.

I saw a few branches in the hedge that needed lopping, so I did that as well. Once all the front verge was cut, I got the strimmer out and cleaned up the edges and around the signposts.

I had just finished and was putting my tools away when I saw a van pull up outside the shop. I saw it was the drinks delivery.

I headed up to the shop just as Emily came out.

“Hi Zak, Sue said you were coming back!” she said with a smile. We had seen each other the day before, but had not had time to chat.

“Hi Emily, how are you?” I smiled.

“Yes, all good, thanks,” she replied, “Busy as always!”

The van driver started to get boxes out of the back of his vehicle, and Emily and I took them into the shop. We were still stocking the fridge and the shelves when Sue came in.

“Wow, I didn’t think I had ordered so much!” Sue smiled.

“Some will have to go into the store cupboard,” Emily said.

“It’s a shame we can’t knock through into the storeroom to extend the shop!” I said.

“That’s a good idea!” Sue said.

We all stopped stocking the shelves. I stood by the wall that was next to the storeroom. I started tapping and soon found that it was obvious there had been a doorway there, but it was blocked off.

“Let’s look at it from the other side!” I said. So, we all walked around and into the storeroom. There were some bags stacked against the wall, but when we moved them, it was obvious there was a doorway.

“I think we could move the boards on the other side and knock through into here,” I said.
