I woke early the following day. I did a few warm-ups and then ran for five miles. I was back home, showered, and dressed before eight o’clock.
I wanted to go to the bank and get some cash to treat Siobhan to a lovely meal in the city. Mom had made tea. I drank mine and then headed out to walk into town. The bank had just opened. I got some money out of my secret account. Then I walked over to Siobhan’s. Her folks had already left for work. I walked across the drive just as the postman was walking away from her door.
I didn’t need to knock. Siobhan had heard the postman and saw me at the same time.
She invited me in, we kissed, and she had a handful of letters.
“Fancy a coffee?” she asked with a smile.
“Oh, yes, please, I said.
She put the kettle on and prepared the cups. Then, as the kettle boiled, she sorted the post. She had two letters addressed to her.
One was an A4 buff envelope, and she opened that first. She read it, looked at me and reread it.
“I have been offered an interview at The Queen Mary’s Hospital!” she beamed.
The Queen Mary Hospital was the big hospital in the city. I had been there twice. Once when I went to visit my Grandad just before he died, and once when I broke my arm at junior school.
“That’s great news!” I said and stood up so we could hug.
Then I felt a wave of panic wash over me. She was away for four weeks.
“When is the interview?” I asked.
“Oh, you are thinking what I am thinking!” she smiled, “But it’s in five weeks, so I will be back by then!”
“That’s good!” I said and hugged her.
Then she opened the second letter.
“Wow, another invitation to an interview, but I can’t make this one!” she shrugged.
“Ring them and explain the circumstances, and I’m sure they will understand,” I told her.
“Yes ... why not? They can only say no!” she agreed.
So I made the coffee while she rang the hospital to ask for a delay. She came back into the room ten minutes later with a smile on her face.
“The lady was a netball player, and she said she could delay the interview if I took the netball camp letter!” she said, sat down, and drank her now-nearly-cold coffee.
“Where is the interview?” I asked as I washed my cup out in the sink.
“It’s at the dental hospital,” she said as she reread the letter
“Where is that?” I asked, and I had never heard of it.
“It’s just around the corner from the Queen Mary!” she smiled and gave me her cup to wash.
“I will go and get the netball letter,” she said and left me to dry the cups.
She also had to fill out two forms stating that she would attend the interviews. She could have posted them, but she decided to drop them in by hand. It would give her time to scope out the journey and stuff, she said.
We walked into town and bought return tickets to the city. The trains ran every twenty minutes, so we didn’t have to wait for long. The journey took about an hour or so. We talked about her job interviews as the train trundled along the track.
Queen Mary’s Hospital was only a ten-minute walk from the train station. We walked hand in hand to the front doors, and then I waited while she dropped off the form.
When she came out, she was smiling.
“It all seems so real now!” she said and hugged me.
We soon found the dental hospital, and again I waited outside while Siobhan went in.
She came out twenty minutes later.
“Wow, the lady in there, Angie, is a player-coach at the local netball club,” she smiled.
“And she moved the interview?” I asked.
“Yes, yes she did!” She also invited me to a trial at the netball club.
“Wow, that’s great news!” I said, and we hugged.
“Right, what do you fancy doing now?” I asked as she broke the kiss.
“You wanted to go to the record shop, didn’t you?” she asked.
“Yes, if you don’t mind!” I smiled.
“Of course not!” she beamed.
There was a big, famous record store called Disk-covery in the city. It had a massive stock of albums. We found our way there after two or three wrong turns. Neither of us had spent much time in the city.
We browsed for nearly an hour. I brought three albums, Siobhan picked two, and when we went to the checkout, I paid for them.
“Are you flush?” she asked as the guy put the albums in a bag for us.
“My aunt paid me for all the work I did at her stables!” I said and took the bag of albums.
“You are such a good boyfriend!” Siobhan smiled, “My mom said so this morning!”
“Did she really?” I asked.
“Oh yes, she told me you are a keeper!” Siobhan smiled.
“Wow, anyway, are you hungry?” I asked
“I could eat, but we are going Dutch!” she said and kissed me.
I knew there was a McDonald’s in the city, and we found it after asking a traffic warden for directions. I had never been to one as there were not that many around. Siobhan had been in one once before on a trip to London with her mom and dad.
We perused the menu and then ordered. We ate and chatted. Siobahn was so pleased about her interviews. I asked if she was still going to post her CVs at the other hospitals, and she said it wouldn’t hurt.
So after we had eaten, we headed out, and she had three other hospitals in mind; the first two were easy to find as they were next to each other. The third took us over an hour.
After she had dropped off her CV, we got a bus back to the train station. A train back to our town was due in ten minutes. I got us takeaway coffees for the journey.
Once we were back in our town, we walked back to Siobhan’s. Her mom and dad were home, and she made a pot of tea as she filled them in with her news. They were both really happy for her.
As I sat and drank my tea, I wondered about our futures and where they would take us.
As usual, they invited me to eat with them, but I thought I should go home and cook for Mom.
When I got home, there was a message on the answering machine. It was from Sue. I called her back, but it went to her answering machine. I cooked sausages, mash and peas for tea. My timing was perfect as mom walked in as I started the gravy.
The rest of the week flew by. Siobhan and I spent a lot of time alone, but as she had her period, there was no action. I kept thinking about Friday. Anna had told me she was game for some more fun. Then on Thursday night, Siobhan called me to tell me her dad had decided to give the Friday market a miss as they were flying out to Spain the following day, to say I was a bit pissed off was an understatement.
She asked me to go over for lunch the following day. So, on Friday, I got up and did my run. Then I had breakfast with Mom before she left for work. She was on all day, so she asked me to sort out the tea. I did some chores before walking over to Siobhan’s.
