“Laurel, come say hi to your mom before you go,” James instructed his daughter.
“I’ll miss the bus!” Laurel complained.
“Hunter will drive you,” James suggested. Hunter snorted and sneered, but a look from James set him straight.
James handed Laurel his phone before she could argue any more.
“Hi sweetheart!” Clover said through the video chat. She was sunburned and her strawberry blond hair looked ragged, but her joy shined above it all.
“Hi mom. How’s Woodstock or whatever?” Laurel asked.
“It’s a blast,” Clover answered. “I’m having so much fun, and I’m learning so much! I can’t wait to teach you this new dehydration enchantment I learned.”
Laurel rolled her eyes.
“Hey, what was that for?” Clover asked.
“It’s just...,” Laurel began, “what’s the point? It’s not like any of this stuff is actually useful. All those years studying ... I could have been, I don’t know, learning to be a cheerleader or something.”
“Okay, hon, I get it,” Clover said sympathetically. “Your interests are changing. Hang in there. When I get home we’ll sit down and find you something more inspiring to work on. Sound good?”
“Yeah, I guess,” Laurel answered.
