Two days before graduation. We’d known each other since first grade, and we were sworn enemies. I was the smartest girl. He was the smartest boy. He had the higher GPA, but only because he didn’t take PE one semester, doctor’s excuse. But the class voted me to give the speech at commencement. “Want me to help you?” he asked. “In case you need help spelling some of the big words.” This was a dig. In a spelling bee in second grade I’d missed ocean. O T I O N. I’d thought I was being so smart, but instantly the smirk on Sean’s face told me I should have tried O S H U N.

Man and woman standing beside each other. The man’s hand is high in the air in a cheering manner, while the woman looks embarrassed.

In junior high he made up a rhyme:

Braidy, Braidy,
So afraidy,
Nose in the air
Like a stuck-up lady.

I got even with:

Sean, Sean,
So forlorn.
Beats his meat
From dusk to dawn.

I was the one who got detention.

We were both virgins. I think most of the kids in class thought we were gay. I knew better. I saw the way he looked at me. He wanted to be friends. He was afraid I’d reject him. Maybe I would have.

“You know I love you,” he said. We were walking home from the bus stop. Neighbors.

“Now you tell me,” I said. “You’re so stupid.”

“I am stupid,” he said. “Stupid in love with you.”

“Okay, then we’d better fuck, just to make sure,” I told him. Not that I thought that would scare him off. “You got any condoms?”

“I can get some,” he said. “Probably.”

“I’ve been on birth control since sophomore year,” I told him.

“Your mom?” he said.

“Yeah, my mom. So where shall we do it?”

“My folks are out of town,” he said.

Truth is I was nervous. I wanted to back out. But I went up the stairs. His bed had a bedspread with a pirate ship. “It’s like sleeping under the ocean,” he said.
